BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A has meanwhile become a proven method for treatment of gustatory sweating (focal hyperhidrosis, Frey's syndrome). Clear-cut recommendations regarding dosage of botulinum toxin A in Frey's syndrome are currently not available. The aim of this prospective randomized study therefore was to investigate botulinum toxin A with respect to its efficacy in Frey's syndrome, the ideal dose yielding maximal duration of the effect, and patient contentedness as well as unwanted side effects in patients of the Clinic of OMF Surgery at the Ruhr-University of Bochum.

The amount of sweating in lateral and medial sites in the forehead was investigated with quantitative evaporimetry in 18 patients with Horner's syndrome: eight cases with a central (1st), five with a preganglionic (2nd), and five with a postganglionic (3rd) neurone lesion. Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and sarcoidosis are both granulomatous disorders of unknown etiology. Although they are distinct clinical entities, a small number of patients presenting with manifestations of both has been reported. We describe a female patient with PBC and sarcoidosis who developed a malignant cutaneous tumor with histologic and immunohistochemical characteristics of a sweat gland carcinoma (SGC). An SGC, developing in a patient with concurrent PBC and sarcoidosis has not been reported previously.

Damage of the auriculo-temporal nerve with consecutive Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating) can occur with fractures of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as a result of the anatomic proximity. A case of marked gustatory sweating as a rare complication of a mandibular joint fracture and alternation of therapy are reported.

The combined effects of vibration and noise on palmar sweating were studied experimentally in healthy subjects. Ten subjects were exposed to vibration at an acceleration of 100 m.sec-2 root mean square at a frequency of 125 Hz, a noise level of 105 dB(A) at a frequency of 1000 Hz and both stimuli together. A simple method was devised for recording dermatoglyphics in a form suitable for sweat pore counting. Fifteen members of a family with a hypohidrotic X-linked ectodermal dysplasia made their own hand prints using our method and mailed the results to us for interpretation. The simplicity of the technique also makes it practical to use on new-born males at risk for the condition, or where dermatoglyphic records are required for other purposes. Preliminary data suggest that patchiness of sweat pore distribution on the fingers and palms may be useful in the discrimination of heterozygotes.

Urine samples of five patients with epidermolysis bullosa hereditaria were examined for the presence of acid glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and compared to 10 healthy subjects.
