The increase in the prevalence of obesity and the concomitant rise in obesity-related illness have led to substantial pressure on health care systems throughout the world. While the combination of reduced exercise, increased sedentary time, poor diet, and genetic predisposition is undoubtedly pivotal in generating obesity and increasing disease risk, a large body of work indicates that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) contributes to obesity-related disease development and progression. In obesity, sympathetic nervous activity is regionalized, with activity in some outflows being particularl…

The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the regulation of peripheral inflammation. Sympathetic nervous activation stimulates inflammatory gene expression and cytokines, whereas parasympathetic nervous activation suppresses the production of inflammatory cytokines by immune cells. However, most studies on the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and immune processes have analyzed a single branch of the autonomic nerves in isolation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation on macrophages, which are controlled

OBJECTIVE: Two hypotheses concerning mechanisms of weight gain and of blood pressure elevation in obesity were tested. The first hypothesis is that in human obesity sympathetic nervous system underactivity is present, as a metabolic basis for the obesity. The second hypothesis, attributable to Landsberg, is that sympathetic nervous activation occurs with chronic overeating, elevating blood pressure. These are not mutually exclusive hypotheses, since obesity is a heterogeneous disorder.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Whole body and regional sympathetic nervous system activity, in the kidneys and heart, w…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The moderate glucose-lowering effect of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors is unlikely to explain SGLT2 inhibitor-mediated beneficial outcomes, and unravelling the underlying mechanisms is a high priority in the research community. Given the dominant pathophysiologic role of the sympathetic nervous system activation in conditions such as hypertension and perturbed glucose homeostasis, it is pertinent to postulate that SGLT2 inhibitors may exert their beneficial effects at least in part via sympathetic inhibition.
RECENT FINDINGS: SGLT2 inhibitors have shown …

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that autonomic neuropathies may adversely affect gastrointestinal motility by involving the extrins … fferent individuals but seems to be restricted to the sympathetic branch. The known function of the sympathetic nervous system as the motility "brake" suggests that pain could be a manifestation of unmodulated peristalsis, resulting in abdominal cramps.

This systematic review explores the influence of silence on the autonomic nervous system. The Polyvagal Theory has been used as a reference … nce. Inner silence enhances activity of the ventral vagus, favoring social engagement, and reducing sympathetic nervous system activity and physiological stress. Outer silence, conversely, can induce a heightened state of alertness, potentially triggering vagal brake removal and sympathetic nervous system activation, though with training, it can foster inner silence, preven …

BACKGROUND: Elevated sympathetic nervous system activity has been shown to have a detrimental effect on bone mass in animal studies, whereas parasympathetic activity is thought to exert a protective effect. However, little is known about the relationship between autonomic nervous system activity and bone health in humans. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between resting autonomic nervous system activity and areal BMD (aBMD) or volumetric BMD (vBMD) in older adults.
METHODS: A total of 119 older adults (27 men, 92 women) were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants…

Liu et al.1 generate human sympathetic ganglion organoids and assemble them with heart-forming organoids to build functionally connected sympathetic-cardiac organoids in vitro. Their platform captures autonomic development, neuromodulation of heart function, and metabolic injury, opening new opportunities to study human autonomic disorders and cardiometabolic disease.2.

BACKGROUND: Much published data exists on the position of cervicothoracic ganglion, but a little published research has been done on the cervicothoracic system of dog. Herein, we illustrated topographical position and shape of each ganglion of cervicothoracic system to determine the distribution of nerves dispersing from them on two sides, left and right.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our work designed on the usage of 10 healthy adult dogs. Left cervicothoracic sympathetic system is represented by two ganglia: caudal and middle ganglion, while the right system is represented by three ganglia: caudal

Despite extensive research on the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), there is still disagreement on the underlying mechanisms. The rat model for experimentally induced polycystic ovaries (PCO)-produced by a single injection of estradiol valerate-has similarities with human PCOS, and both are associated with hyperactivity in the sympathetic nervous system. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is known to serve as a neurotrophin for both the sympathetic and the sensory nervous systems and to enhance the activity of catecholaminergic and possibly other neuron types. Electro-acupuncture (EA) i…

Investigations are reviewed which are suitable for use in clinical situations in which lesions of the sympathetic nervous system are suspected. Particular attention is given to the problems of cardiovascular regulation as orthostatic hypotension is one of the commoner manifestations of sympathetic failure. Tests of the autonomic innervation of the eyes are also discussed. Tests of parasympathetic function are briefly described, as both parts of the autonomic nervous system may be affected by the same disease process.

Area A5 is a noradrenergic cell group in the brain stem characterised by its important role in triggering sympathetic activity, exerting a profound influence on the sympathetic outflow, which is instrumental in the modulation of cardiovascular functions, stress responses and various other physiological processes that are crucial for adaptation and survival mechanisms. Understanding the role of area A5, therefore, not only provides insights into the basic functioning of the sympathetic nervous system but also sheds light on the neuronal basis of a number of autonomic responses. In this review, …

Neurogenic pulmonary oedema (NPE) is a life-threatening complication that develops rapidly and dramatically after an injury to the central nervous system (CNS). The autonomic system imbalance produced by severe brain damage may play an important role in the development of NPE. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system and inhibition of the vagus nerve system are essential prerequisites for autonomic system imbalance. The more severe the damage, the more pronounced the phenomenon. Sympathetic hyperactivity is associated with increased release of catecholamines from peripheral sympathetic ner…

Overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is a hallmark of aging. The cellular mechanisms behind this overactivity remain poorly understood, with most attention paid to likely central nervous system components. In this work, we hypothesized that aging also affects the function of motor neurons in the peripheral sympathetic ganglia. To test this hypothesis, we compared the electrophysiological responses and ion-channel activity of neurons isolated from the superior cervical ganglia of young (12 weeks), middle-aged (64 weeks), and old (115 weeks) mice. These approaches showed that aging doe…

It has long been recognized that the vestibular system plays a major role in autonomic control. The nature of this control remains in dispute, however, as some evidence points to a vestibularly mediated parasympathetic activation, whereas other evidence points to a sympatho-excitatory role for labyrinthine outputs. A theoretical explanation is offered that attempts to resolve this issue by postulating that the utricles exert a predominantly sympatho-excitatory influence via their interactions with brain noradrenergic pathways, while the semicircular canals (and possibly saccules) increase para
