Not All Sleep Loss Is Equal: A Comprehensive Evaluation of Rodent Models, Their Neurobiological Validity, and Translational Relevance to Neurological Disease.

Not all sleep loss is equal, and overlooking this limits progress in sleep and neurological disease research. We compared nine rodent sleep … affeine produced antioxidant depletion, serotonin reduction, acetylcholinesterase upregulation, and synaptophysin loss, early neurodegeneration markers. We propose a disease-targeted framework with six translational priorities and reporting standards.

Unique orbital biphenotypic tumour with neuroendocrine and sebaceous carcinoma features.

A 60-year-old female presented with a large, left upper eyelid mass that had rapidly expanded in the 3 months prior to presentation. She had a presumed chalazion excised from the same area 1.5 years ago, but no pathology was investigated. On examination, she had a palpebral mass measuring 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm that abutted the globe with extensive conjunctival involvement. Neuroimaging demonstrated lesions concerning for parotid gland metastases. An incisional biopsy demonstrated synaptophysin-positive small blue cells concerning for neuroendocrine carcinoma. The patient underwent orbital exenterati…

Dipeptide Mimetic of the BDNF GSB-106 with Antidepressant-Like Activity Stimulates Synaptogenesis.

Dipeptide mimetic of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor bis(N-monosuccinyl-L-seryl-L-lysine) hexamethylenediamide (working name GSB-106), which reproduces the homodimeric structure of BDNF and the beta-turn of its fourth loop, activates TrkB, AKT, and ERK, exhibits neuroprotective and antidepressant activity, and is able to stimulate neurogenesis in the hippocamp of stressed mice. Using Western blot hybridization and synaptophysin (synaptogenesis marker), we showed the ability of chronically administered GSB-106 to stimulate synaptogenesis, increasing the synaptic density in the hippocamp b…

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumour in a dog.

A 1-year-old German shepherd dog was presented with paraparesis quickly progressing to paraplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large mass beneath the thoracolumbar vertebral column infiltrating the spinal canal and resulting in severe extradural compression of the spinal cord. Microscopically, this comprised a cell-rich unencapsulated tumour supported by fine bands of a fibrovascular stroma and occasionally forming primitive rosettes. Immunohistochemistry showed the tumour cells to express synaptophysin and neuron-specific enolase. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells had low to m…

Small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the female genital tract: A comprehensive overview.

Small-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (SCNECs) of the female genital tract are rare and aggressive tumors that are characterized by a high rate of recurrence and poor prognosis. They can arise from various sites within the female genital tract, including the cervix, endometrium, ovary, fallopian tube, vagina, and vulva. They are composed of cells with neuroendocrine features, such as the ability to produce and secrete hormones and peptides, and a high mitotic rate. Immunohistochemical staining for neuroendocrine markers, such as chromogranin A, synaptophysin, and CD56, can aid in the diagnosis …

DOG-1 positive primary acinic cell carcinoma of the lung and investigation of molecular status.

Primary acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) of the lung is an extremely rare neoplasm that more often arises near to a right bronchus. It is characterized by two populations of clear and dark eosinophilic cells, arranged in a glandular acinar pattern. Mitosis are rare and tumor cells show small and eccentric nuclei. Positive stain for PAS, PAS-D, cytokeratin, A1AT and A1ACT is reported, while TTF1, p40, synaptophysin, SMA, and S100 are substantially negative. DOG-1 positive stain was observed in ACC of the salivary glands and its negativity was proposed to distinguish between primary and metastatic AC…

Metastatic esthesioneuroblastoma in a horse.

A 17-year-old horse developed severe proptosis of the left eye over a period of 1.5 years. At post-mortem examination a neoplasm was found involving the left ethmoid bone, left maxillary sinus, left orbit, left superior turbinate, and the left eye. Tumour cells were arranged in nests separated by a fine fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were labelled by antibodies against neurofilament protein, synaptophysin, glial fibrillary acidic protein and S-100 protein antigen, but were negative for chromogranin A, cytokeratin and desmin. Electronmicroscopically, the cells sho…

[Central neurocytoma. A report of 4 cases].

We report 4 cases of central neurocytoma removed by a transfrontal approach with no recurrence after a mean follow up of 3 years. This uncommon lesion of the supratentorial ventricles (150 cases reported) occurs in young adults, and often induces intracranial hypertension secondary to an obstructive hydrocephalus. The CT scan, MRI and histopathological features are related. This neuronal origin tumor is difficult to distinguish from other intraventricular processes as oligodendroglioma or ependymoma. However, the immunopositivity for the neuronal markers as synaptophysin, calcineurin and micro…

Ganglioglioma of the pineal region: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ganglioglioma is a lesion rarely encountered in the pineal region. Only six cases have been published to our knowledge. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of a 38-year-old male suffering from a pineal ganglioglioma that was totally removed by surgery. Histological diagnosis was made by light microscopy using immunostaining for synaptophysin. We review the few radiological and pathological data available in the literature concerning this very rare lesion for which surgery alone provides excellent results. CONCLUSION: The possibility of long term remission obtained by surgery…

[Intraepidermal Merkel cell carcinoma with INSM1 expression. A case report].

We report the case of a 90-year-old male who presented with an erythematous desquamative plaque on his left cheek. Histopathology demonstrated an epidermal lesion with multifocal epithelial growth. The cells were small, with scant cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei with molding and a high mitotic and apopototic rate. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for CK20, CK7, synaptophysin and INMS1. These findings are consistent with a Merkel cell carcinoma in situ. This tumor corresponds to a primary neuroendocrine neoplasm of the skin, which usually affects elderly people with sun-exposed skin. …

[A Case of Appendiceal Neuroendocrine Tumor Diagnosed after Appendectomy].

A 25-year-old woman visited our hospital with a complaint of right lower abdominal pain. As a result of the examination, she was diagnosed as having acute appendicitis. After conservative treatment, we planned an elective surgery. At 3 months after discharge, laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. We found a mass of 10mm in diameter at the body of the appendix. Histopathological examination revealed the proliferation of heteromorphic cells with small round nuclei. It was positive for chromogranin A and synaptophysin in immunostaining, so we made a diagnosis of NET G1. Tumor cells infiltrated…
