PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The navicular bone lies at the apex of the deformity in severe talipes planovalgus with forefoot abductus, in the residual cavus of congenital talipes equinovarus, in certain cases of congenital convexity, and in certain types of neurological equinovarus. Resection of the navicular bone can be proposed to correct certain deformities.

A ten month-old boy had a 5p trisomy secondary to a paternal t(4;5) (p35;p12) translocation. The main stigmata were macrocranium, hydrocephaly, coloboma of the right iris, atrial septal defect, talipes equinovarus, and psychomotor retardation. Cavovarus foot is a complex three-dimensional deformity, which includes a wide range of clinical conditions from subtle deformities to disabling feet. In this article, the authors discuss the role of weight-bearing computed tomography, which might enable to avoid double imaging (radiographs + tomography) in patients for which a detailed osteoarticular assessment is required, with the advantage to obtain tomographic images in standing position and a reduction of radiation exposure.

A case of positive identification from decomposed human remains using an unusual foot deformity is presented. Scrutiny of the decedent revealed foot deformities, which upon examination, prompted further inquiry. Radiographic comparisons and defleshing each foot established bilateral talipes equinovarus (TEV, clubfoot). Positive identification was based upon unique skeletal features present in the radiographs.

A male infant presented with two well-formed lower limbs and pelvis with external male genitalia attached to the thorax at the xiphisternum. The infant also had exomphalos major and talipes equinovarus deformity of the right foot. Surgical correction was done without any difficulty. The case is unusual, and such an abnormality has not been reported before.

Two still-born males whose mothers were sisters are presented. The features holoprosencephaly, hypokinesia, microcephaly, talipes, and other contractures correspond to those in the two male sibs reported by Morse et al. (1987). Congental talipes equinovarus, or clubfoot, remains one of the commonest congenital limb deformities. The genetics of this condition are not yet fully understood. It is increasingly being diagnosed on prenatal ultrasound with implications for prenatal counselling. With the widespread acceptance of the Ponseti method of clubfoot treatment major surgical interventions are needed much less frequently and long-term outcomes are improved.

Congenital varus deformity of the first metatarsal can be secondary to the abnormal insertion of abductor hallucis, a space-occupying lesion of the first web space, or hypoplasia of the metatarsal. We report a unique case where all three factors were present in one foot. This was combined with talipes equinovarus, which gave the appearance of a simian or hand-like foot.

In 2009, the National Network for Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC) was established as a hospital-based surveillance system of major structural birth defects. We report on a 20-week fetus with manifestations similar, but not identical, to those of atelosteogenesis. The present fetus had rhizomelic micromelia with absence of ossification in the humerus, radius, ulna, and cervical and upper thoracic vertebral bodies; coronal clefts in the ossified thoracic vertebral bodies; and talipes equinovarus. The physes were relatively normal on histologic examination.

The in utero sonographic detection of some of the more subtle anomalies of the hand and foot is now possible with the improved resolution of the newer ultrasound equipment. Nine case reports of fetal hand and/or foot deformities are presented, with 12 total lesions. The deformities include clinodactyly, symbrachydactyly, talipomanus, talipes, and "rockerbottom" foot. The sonographic appearance of each of these is discussed.

We describe a further patient with the orofaciodigital syndrome type IV. The clinical characteristics include lobulated tongue, pseudo-cleft of lip, pre- and postaxial polydactyly of hands and feet, severe talipes equinovarus, mesomelic limb shortness associated with tibial hypoplasia, and severe bilateral deafness. Five similar cases including the present patient are now on record. Autosomal recessive inheritance is likely.

Two sisters, the children of first cousin Pakistani Moslem parents, have unusual facies, tongue hamartomata, pre- and postaxial polydactyly, severe talipes, and mesomelic limb shortening associated with tibial dysplasia. Homozygosity for a recessive gene defect is probable. The phenotype resembles, but is distinct from, the orofaciodigital syndromes delineated to date. We suggest that this condition be labelled OFD IV.
