Exploiting prior knowledge in continuous decision-making under uncertainty: the case of tennis experts.

Leading theories of sensorimotor control propose that humans navigate uncertainty by integrating prior and sensory information in a Bayesian manner. However, empirical evidence is largely limited to static and constrained lab tasks. How humans exploit prior knowledge during continuously unfolding decision-making in naturalistic behavior remains unclear. Here, we study a task that pushes the human sensorimotor system to its limits: returning fast tennis serves. This task is particularly informative for gaining insights into the dynamics of unfolding decisions in action, owing to a distinct feat

Shifting the body midline: The impact of visuomotor modulations in virtual reality on peripheral autonomic activity.

A coherent sense of body ownership and position depends on the integration of top-down and bottom-up sensory signals. Disrupting this coherence through experimental illusions can alter body representation and peripheral physiological states, such as body temperature. To further investigate this link, we developed a novel virtual reality (VR) paradigm that manipulates spatial body representation by virtually repositioning the left hand into the right side of the body during a visuomotor task. Participants (n = 26) engaged in a 15-min immersive VR task using their right hand to manipulate a virt

Comparative study on muscle-tendon stiffness and balance impairment in postmenopausal women: a focus on osteosarcopenia and osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study set out to examine the stiffness of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and Achilles tendon across postmenopausal women with osteosarcopenia (OS), osteoporosis (OP), and normal bone mineral density. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between muscle-tendon stiffness and postural sway during a curve-tracking task in both sagittal (AP) and frontal (ML) planes. METHODS: Seventy-three women volunteered to participate in this study. The participants were classified into OS (T-score ≤ - 2.5 and muscle mass below 5.5 kg/m2), OP (T-score ≤ - 2.5), and healthy (T-scor

Modulation of creativity by transcranial direct current stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Creativity is the use of original ideas to accomplish something innovative. Previous research supports the notion that creativity is facilitated by an activation of the right and/or a deactivation of the left prefrontal cortex. In contrast, recent brain imaging studies suggest that creativity improves with left frontal activation. OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to further elucidate the neural basis of and ways to modulate creativity, based on the modulation of prefrontal cortical activity through the non-invasive brain stimulation technique transcranial direct current s

[Neurobiological correlates of cognitive flexibility in ADHD - A systematic review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood psychiatric disorders, which persists to adulthood in 30-50% of the cases. Previous studies have shown that cognitive flexibility, which means to switch between two different rules, that can be tested with task switching paradigms, is affected. Although poor performance in cognitive flexibility tests has been demostrated, the neurobiological background is only partly known. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our review was to examine the neurobiological background of impairment of cognitive flexib

Frontostriatal Circuits Alterations Associated with Cognitive Flexibility Deterioration in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported abnormal functional connectivity (FC) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC)-striatum circuit in patients with premanifest Huntington's disease (HD). However, there is a lack of evidence showing persistence of abnormal frontostriatal FC and its relation to cognitive flexibility performance in patients with clinically manifest HD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the resting-state FC integrity of the frontostriatal circuit and its relation to cognitive flexibility in HD patients and healthy con

Vision does not always help stroke survivors compensate for impaired limb position sense.

BACKGROUND: Position sense is commonly impaired after stroke. Traditional rehabilitation methods instruct patients to visualize their limbs to compensate for impaired position sense. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate how the use of vision influences impaired position sense. METHODS: We examined 177 stroke survivors, an average of 12.7 days (+/- 10 days (SD)) post-stroke, and 133 neurologically-intact controls with a robotic assessment of position sense. The robot positioned one limb (affected) and subjects attempted to mirror-match the position using the opposite limb (unaffected). Subject

Basis of executive functions in fine-grained architecture of cortical and subcortical human brain networks.

Theoretical models suggest that executive functions rely on both domain-general and domain-specific processes. Supporting this view, prior brain imaging studies have revealed that executive activations converge and diverge within broadly characterized brain networks. However, the lack of precise anatomical mappings has impeded our understanding of the interplay between domain-general and domain-specific processes. To address this challenge, we used the high-resolution multimodal magnetic resonance imaging approach of the Human Connectome Project to scan participants performing 3 canonical exec

Lower-limb muscle function is influenced by changing mechanical demands in cycling.

Although cycling is a seemingly simple, reciprocal task, muscles must adapt their function to satisfy changes in mechanical demands induced by higher crank torques and faster pedalling cadences. We examined whether muscle function was sensitive to these changes in mechanical demands across a wide range of pedalling conditions. We collected experimental data of cycling where crank torque and pedalling cadence were independently varied from 13 to 44 N m and 60 to 140 rpm. These data were used in conjunction with musculoskeletal simulations and a recently developed functional index-based approach

Spatial attention deficits in patients with acquired or developmental cerebellar abnormality.

Recent imaging and clinical studies have challenged the concept that the functional role of the cerebellum is exclusively in the motor domain. We present evidence of slowed covert orienting of visuospatial attention in patients with developmental cerebellar abnormality (patients with autism, a disorder in which at least 90% of all postmortem cases reported to date have Purkinje neuron loss), and in patients with cerebellar damage acquired from tumor or stroke. In spatial cuing tasks, normal control subjects across a wide age range were able to orient attention within 100 msec of an attention-d

Work dynamics in family care of hemophilic children.

School-aged boys with hemophilia, their parents, and siblings were interviewed and observed over a 5-year period, the field work taking place in their homes, schools, and during hospitalization, clinic visits, and summer camp periods. Sequential, open-ended interviews, and participant-observation techniques enabled the inquiry to study the process of the children's development as a major factor in changes that occurred in the management of their illness over time. Qualitative issues identified for study focused on the divisions of labor inherent in family interactions concerning the care of th

Student-AI interaction in computer-assisted consecutive interpreting: patterns and performance.

While student-AI interaction patterns have been explored in self-paced cross-linguistic tasks such as L2 writing and translation post-editing, little is known about how students interact with AI in bilingual tasks under intense cognitive and temporal constraints. This study uses computer-assisted consecutive interpreting (CACI) as a window to examine student-AI interaction patterns in such high-stakes environments. Twenty-two Chinese-native interpreting trainees, grouped by prior AI training experience, performed bidirectional CACI tasks using AI-enabled systems integrating automatic speech re

CLASH-CTTA: Class-Wise Shift-Aware Hierarchical Continual Test-Time Adaptation.

The domain shift between training and test data has emerged as a critical obstacle to the generalization of deep models. Continual Test-Time Adaptation (CTTA), which aims to leverage online test data stream to adapt to continuously evolving target distributions, has become a promising and practical solution to address real-world domain shift issues. Existing CTTA methods primarily rely on self-training frameworks based on output consistency and entropy-based loss functions, which often consider either the entire batch or reliable samples within the batch in isolation, failing to combine both o

Telemedicine implementation and healthcare utilization in Rwanda: interrupted time series of babyl digital health services from 2015 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Digital health platforms are transforming primary care delivery in low- and middle-income countries. Babyl provided Rwanda’s first nationwide telemedicine service from 2019 to September 2023, integrating nurse-led triage with physician oversight, e-prescriptions, and national health insurance. Despite processing 3.9 million consultations, evidence on population-level impacts of scaled telemedicine services like Babyl in sub-Saharan Africa remains limited. This study aimed to quantify the association between national-scale telemedicine implementation and facility-based healthcare ut

Blockade of NMDA GluN2B receptors selectively impairs behavioral flexibility but not initial discrimination learning.

RATIONALE: Behavioral flexibility is the ability to adjust behavior when environmental contingencies change and is compromised in disease states such as schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and following damage to the prefrontal cortex. METHODS: The present study investigated the contribution of N-methyl-D-aspartate GluN2B receptor subunits in the initial learning and in shifting between or within discrimination strategies (i.e., strategy set-shifting and reversal learning), using tasks conducted in operant chambers. Strategy set-shifting required rats initially to learn a

The Effects of High-Definition Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (HD-tACS) on Dual-Task Performance and Upper-Limb Multi-Joint Motor Control.

This study investigated the effects of high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) on cognitive-motor dual-task performance and upper-limb multi-joint motor control. Sixteen right-handed healthy male participants completed a double-blind, randomized crossover experiment involving active tACS and sham tACS conditions separated by a one-week washout interval. A 4 × 1 HD-tACS montage was applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at 5 Hz for 20 min. Participants performed a synchronous cognitive-motor dual-task paradigm that combined an N-back working memory t
