As the popularity of body art including tattoo ink has increased, the safety associated with it has become an important interest. In this study, twenty volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and two aldehydes in tattoo inks were identified and quantified. BACKGROUND: Temporary black henna tattooing is highly popular among children and young adults in some regions. The unmonitored addition of different products to darken the color of pure henna has been the cause of many tattoo-associated dermatoses.
OBSERVATION: Hypertrichosis secondary to henna pseudotattoo is a rare, newly recognized cutaneous manifestation. A number of previous literature reviews and research studies have found a correlation between viral hepatitis infections and tattoos. The 1897 subjects of the current study were young adult male military recruits in southern Taiwan (476 with tattoos and 1421 without tattoos) who underwent induction physical examinations before conscription. Contact dermatitis following the application of temporary paint-on henna tattoos indicates a potentially serious problem of active sensitization. We describe 2 cases involving sisters who travelled to Bali together and acquired a temporary black henna tattoo to the lower back region. Four patients developed contact dermatitis to black henna tattoos on holiday in the Middle East and Asia. Two to ten days after skin painting an itchy, reddish swelling developed at the site of the tattoo exactly following its sharply demarcated borders. An unusual case of generalised sarcoidosis of the skin on tattoo marks done two years for "medicinal" purposes on a 56 year old woman is presented. The lesions were lichenoid and scaly in appearance with closely grouped papules. The old tattoo marks on the skin were not involved and areas of skin between the new tattoo marks were also spared. In addition, the sarcoidosis lesion were pruritic and burning. The circumstantial evidence indicated the medical agent applied on the tattoo wounds as the provocative factor for the development of sarcoidosis of the skin.
