The prevalence of byssinosis and other respiratory symptoms were studied among 433 workers who were occupationally exposed to cotton dust in Bahr Dar Textile Mill. In order to assess the possible human carcinogenicity of formaldehyde we conducted a retrospective cohort mortality study of workers exposed for at least three months to formaldehyde in three garment facilities which produced permanent press garments. A total of 11,030 workers contributing 188,025 person-years were included in the study. Vital status was successfully ascertained through 1982 for over 96% of the cohort. To evaluate the usefulness of passive reactive dosimeters for the determination of individual exposure to carbon disulphide, field studies in viscose plants in Poland and East Germany have been carried out. This study has been carried out to investigate the prevalence of byssinosis and other respiratory symptoms among 311 Sudanese workers in different sections of the Khartoum Weaving and Spinning Company. The prevalence of byssinosis was 67% among blowers, 40% in carders and draw-frame workers, 42% in simplex workers and 37% in ring-frame workers. An attempt was made to assess the importance of selective discharge by death or retirement of workers with respiratory symptoms in a flax mill in Northern Ireland. One hundred and two men who had worked in a flax mill during 1952-62 and who were aged 35 years or more at the time of leaving were followed up. Fourteen of the men had died and 75 were interviewed.
