In this study, the frequency of Theileria and Babesia species in sheep and goats was assessed via reverse line blotting (RLB). A total of 263 apparently healthy sheep and goats, from 16 randomly selected flocks located in 9 localities situated in 3 bioclimatic zones in Tunisia, were investigated for the blood protozoans. RLB hybridization with polymerase chain reaction detected only Theileria ovis in sheep and goats, accounting for 22.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 17.6-27.1%) positive samples. The infection rate in sheep (28.1%; 95% CI: 23.8-32.3%) was higher than in goats (4.7%; 95% CI: -

An increased number of articles on the use of nucleic acid-based hybridization techniques for diagnostic purposes have been recently published. This article reviews nucleic acid-based hybridization as an assay to detect hemoparasite infections of economic relevance in veterinary medicine. By using recombinant DNA techniques, selected clones containing inserts of Anaplasma, Babesia, Cowdria or Theileria genomic DNA sequences have been obtained, and they are now available to be utilized as specific, highly sensitive DNA or RNA probes to detect the presence of the hemoparasite DNA in an infected

Theileria-free waterbuck (Kobus defassa) born in captivity were successfully infected with Theileria parva sporozoites derived from ticks infected by feeding on African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). All waterbuck underwent mild infections with the development of sporadic schizont and piroplasm parasitosis when inoculated with sporozoite doses lethal to cattle. A carrier state of T. parva was demonstrated by feeding clean R. appendiculatus nymphs on two of these infected waterbuck. Tick batches from these waterbuck on 2 of 5 occasions transmitted lethal Theileria infections to cattle. In a separat

The recent advances in immunology and biotechnology have stimulated much research on the control of parasitic diseases through vaccination. This is a review of the state of the art regarding important protozoan and arthropod veterinary parasites. A live oocyst vaccine for avian coccidiosis is still in use but much work has been done on the identification, cloning, and assay of protective antigens. The sporozoites of Eimeria tenella have been the preferred subject and at least four recombinant antigens have already been tested with partial success. Premunization against babesiosis is still wide

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases pose a major threat to livestock productivity in tropical and subtropical regions, by transmitting pathogens of veterinary and public health concern, including Theileria species. Despite the threats posed to the large ruminant industry, integrated studies on the causative agent of tropical theileriosis and its tick vectors from the same infected hosts, along with their associated risk factors, remain limited in northern Pakistan. This study investigated Theileria infection, its associated tick species, and host- and environmental-related risk factors i

Environmental changes and human activities such as deforestation and expansion of agricultural land are increasing tick-borne diseases including Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Theileriosis. These diseases, which affect animals, can be transmitted to humans through tick bites. Kiambu County's warm, wet climate provides an environment conducive to tick breeding and development. This study investigated the circulation and genetic diversity of Theileria parva and Anaplasma spp. in tick samples collected from Kiambu County, Kenya. Ticks were collected from cattle, goats, and sheep usin

Tropical theileriosis is a significant health risk for cattle especially in tropical and subtropical regions where it contributes to high mortality rates and economic losses. Tick-borne protozoan parasites belonging to Theileria genera are responsible for this infection. Theileriosis has been associated with abortion and stillbirth in cattle, primarily as an indirect consequence of maternal illness; however, this association has not been investigated in Pakistan. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the molecular prevalence and distribution of Theileria species in cattle with a rece

Theileriosis exerts a substantial impact on ruminants, resulting in significant economic losses within the animal husbandry sector. The current vaccine, a live attenuated parasite, has several limitations that hinder effective disease control. This study utilized immunoinformatics to prioritize potential vaccine candidates and pointed to the design of a novel mRNA vaccine against Theileria annulata using in silico methods. Nine antigenic proteins were selected using various software, and their epitopes were identified through immunoinformatics tools. These epitopes were assessed for their biol

Equine piroplasmosis is a worldwide tick-borne disease caused by the parasites Theileria equi sensu lato and Babesia caballi, with significant economic and sanitary consequences. These two parasites are genetically variable, with a potential impact on diagnostic accuracy. Our study aimed to evaluate the frequency of asymptomatic carriers of these parasites in France and describe the circulating genotypes. We developed a species-specific nested PCR protocol targeting the 18S small sub-unit (SSU) rRNA gene and used it on blood samples collected from 566 asymptomatic horses across four National V

Apicomplexan haemoprotozoa, including piroplasms from the genera Babesia and Theileria, along with Hepatozoon spp., are tick-borne protozoans that affect domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. Employing a broader-spectrum 18S rDNA PCR assay for Apicomplexa haemoprotozoa, the present study investigated 155 owned dogs presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Bologna and previously tested by routine diagnostic assays for Anaplasmataceae and Babesia spp. infection. The presence of three different species of Apicomplexan hemoprotozoa was observed. Specifically, Babesia ca

Equine piroplasmosis is a major tick-borne horse disease, caused by the intracellular development of piroplasms (Theileria equi sensu lato and Babesia caballi), with significant economic and sanitary consequences. In 2024, 203 blood samples were collected in Guadeloupe (Caribbean) from asymptomatic horses. Using an 18S rRNA nested PCR (nPCR) specific for each equine genus parasite, 79 samples tested positive for Theileria equi and 9 for Babesia caballi, resulting in respective prevalence of 38.9% and 4.4%. Three horses were co-infected. For B. caballi, 18S rRNA sequence analysis revealed the p

Vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) pose a great risk to ruminant production through significant economic losses. Several previous studies in Thailand have mainly been focused on the health of dairy and beef cattle. Water buffaloes are one of the important ruminants in the country, but studies on their infection with VBPs remains limited. We conducted a molecular survey on blood samples from 456 buffaloes obtained from eight provinces across different geographical locations of Thailand. The PCR diagnostics indicated that 116 (25.4%) and 59 (12.9%) of these 456 samples were positive for piroplasm and

We describe here the clinical significance of coinfection with Theileria orientalis and Babesia ovata in cattle. Anemia status in a herd of dairy cattle in Japan was investigated in relation to infection with these parasites. Our findings indicate that while B. ovata infection might not be the primary cause of anemia in the cattle, it may contribute to the clinical development of anemia in animals coinfected with both B. ovata and T. orientalis.
