Progressive Loss of Sensitivity to Electrical Stimulation After Cochlear Implantation in X-Linked Incomplete Partition Type III Deafness.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with X-linked incomplete partition type III (IP3) deafness treated with cochlear implants exhibit higher "Most Comfortable Loudness" (MCL) levels of stimulation and more electrode deactivation than patients with normal morphology. We endeavored to analyze the progression of the MCL levels and electrode deactivation over time and assess those factors that could have led to deactivation. Furthermore, we aimed to assess whether speech perception was affected by a progressive loss of neural contact. DESIGN: All 13 patients with the IP3 malformation in our clinical database we

The size-brightness correspondence: evidence for crosstalk among aligned conceptual feature dimensions.

The same core set of cross-sensory correspondences connecting stimulus features across different sensory channels are observed, regardless of the modality of the stimulus with which the correspondences are probed. This observation suggests that correspondences involve modality-independent representations of aligned conceptual feature dimensions and predicts a size-brightness correspondence in which smaller is aligned with brighter. This suggestion accommodates cross-sensory congruity effects where contrasting feature values are specified verbally rather than perceptually (e.g., where the words

The neural basis of hazard perception differences between novice and experienced drivers - An fMRI study.

The neural mechanisms underlying hazard perception are poorly understood as to how experience leads to better driving skills. In this study we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine experience-related changes in brain activation during hazard perception task between novice and aged drivers. Additionally, region of interest (ROI) and seed-to-voxel analyses were conducted to examine experience-related functional connectivity changes during visual attention and saliency networks between novice (n=15, age 22.13 ± 3.38 years years) and experienced (n=16, age 41.44 ± 5.83 years

Visual representations of time elicit early responses in human temporal cortex.

Time perception is inherently part of human life. All human sensory modalities are always involved in the complex task of creating a temporal representation of the external world. However, when representing time, people primarily rely on auditory information. Since the auditory system prevails in many audio-visual temporal tasks, one may expect that the early recruitment of the auditory network is necessary for building a highly resolved and flexible temporal representation in the visual modality. To test this hypothesis, we asked 17 healthy participants to temporally bisect three consecutive …

The potential mechanisms underlying the effect of acute alcohol use on duration perception.

Acute alcohol consumption has been found to cause duration perception distortions, but the directions of these distortions are not consistent. The mechanisms underlying this effect are also unclear. The present study seeks to elucidate the effect of acute alcohol consumption on duration perception and the mechanisms involved. Forty-one participants in the placebo group and 40 in the alcohol group completed time bisection tasks, attentional network tests, digit span backward tests and arousal reports to evaluate their duration perception, attentional network, working memory capacity and arousal

Conscious perception of flickering stimuli in binocular rivalry and continuous flash suppression is not affected by tACS-induced SSR modulation.

The content of conscious perception is known to correlate with steady-state responses (SSRs), yet their causal relationship remains unclear. Can we manipulate conscious perception by directly interfering with SSRs through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)? Here, we directly addressed this question in three experiments involving binocular rivalry and continuous flash suppression (CFS). Specifically, while participants (N = 24) viewed either binocular rivalry or tried to detect stimuli masked by CFS, we applied sham or real tACS across parieto-occipital cortex at either the sam

Visual context affects the perceived timing of tactile sensations elicited through intracortical microstimulation: a case study of two participants.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) is a technique to provide tactile sensations for a somatosensory brain-machine interface (BMI). A viable BMI must function within the rich, multisensory environment of the real world, but how ICMS is integrated with other sensory modalities is poorly understood. To investigate how ICMS percepts are integrated with visual information, ICMS and visual stimuli were delivered at varying times relative to one another. Both visual context and ICMS current amplitude were found to bias the qualitative experience of ICMS. In two tetraplegic participants, ICMS and v

Altered states phenomena induced by visual flicker light stimulation.

Flicker light stimulation can induce short-term alterations in consciousness including hallucinatory color perception and geometric patterns. In the study at hand, the subjective experiences during 3 Hz and 10 Hz stroboscopic light stimulation of the closed eyes were assessed. In a within-subjects design (N = 24), we applied the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (mood state), time perception ratings, the Altered State of Consciousness Rating Scale, and the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory. Furthermore, we tested for effects of personality traits (NEO Five-Factor Inventory-2 and Tel…

What makes words special? Words as unmotivated cues.

Verbal labels, such as the words "dog" and "guitar," activate conceptual knowledge more effectively than corresponding environmental sounds, such as a dog bark or a guitar strum, even though both are unambiguous cues to the categories of dogs and guitars (Lupyan & Thompson-Schill, 2012). We hypothesize that this advantage of labels emerges because word-forms, unlike other cues, do not vary in a motivated way with their referent. The sound of a guitar cannot help but inform a listener to the type of guitar making it (electric, acoustic, etc.). The word "guitar" on the other hand, can leave the

Role of eye movements in the retinal code for a size discrimination task.

Amylin infusion reduces food intake and slows body weight gain in rodents. In obese male rats, amylin (but not pair feeding) caused a preferential reduction of fat mass with protein preservation despite equal body weight loss in amylin-treated (fed ad libitum) and pair-fed rats. In the present study, the effect of prior or concurrent food restriction on the ability of amylin to cause weight loss was evaluated. Retired female breeder rats were maintained on a high-fat diet (40% fat) for 9 wk. Prior to drug treatment, rats were either fed ad libitum or food restricted for 10 days to lose 5% of t

Too slow to see? Conscious vision and real-time behavior.

We challenge Fleming and Michel's claim that conscious vision is too slow for real-time action. Correlative and functional evidence suggest that conscious perception can emerge around 200 ms post-stimulus and guide behavior. Due to their reliance on rare postdiction effects and assumptions about unconscious vision, they underestimate the speed of conscious vision and overestimate the functional relevance of unconscious vision.

What's taking so long for conscious vision?

A strict lower limit of 400 ms is suggested for the formation of conscious vision. This processing delay could result from the need to create a unified percept over visual features processed with different time constants, and even longer intentional visual processes. Given the flexibility of these processing times, we question the need for a strict lower limit for conscious vision.

Inhibition of delay a century later: A systematic review and Meta-analysis.

Inhibition of delay has received relatively little attention compared with other Pavlovian phenomena, despite its early description by Pavlov. This review examined the conditions under which inhibition of delay develops and evaluated evidence for it both as a phenomenon, reflected in temporal discrimination of the conditioned stimulus, and as a mechanism involving inhibitory processes acting early in the stimulus. Inhibition of delay has been observed across many species and procedures, typically after extensive training and most often with aversive unconditioned stimuli. Although this diversi

Visual search as an embodied process: The effects of perspective change and external reference on search performance.

Traditional visual search tasks in the laboratories typically involve looking for targets in 2D displays with exemplar views of objects. In real life, visual search commonly entails 3D objects in 3D spaces with nonperpendicular viewing and relative motions between observers and search array items, both of which lead to transformations of objects' projected images in lawful but unpredicted ways. Furthermore, observers often do not have to memorize a target before searching, but may refer to it while searching, for example, holding a picture of someone while looking for them from a crowd. Extend

Spatial and temporal processing difficulties in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia: An ERP study.

Magnocellular (M) deficit theory indicates that individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) have low sensitivity to stimuli with high temporal frequencies (HTF) and low spatial frequencies (LSF). However, some studies found that temporal processing and spatial processing were correlated with different reading-related skills. Chinese is a logographic language, and visual skills are particularly important for reading in Chinese. It is necessary to investigate the temporal and spatial processing abilities in the M pathway of Chinese children with DD. Using electrophysiological recordings, the pr

Cross-modality temporal processing deficits in developmental phonological dyslexics.

Neuroanatomical evidence suggests that poor readers may have abnormal lateral (LGN) and medial (MGN) geniculate nuclei responsible for temporal processing in visual and auditory domains respectively (Livingstone & Galaburda, 1993). Although behavioral evidence does support this neuroanatomical evidence in that poor readers have performed poorly on visual and auditory tasks thought to require the utilization of the LGN and MGN, respectively, appropriate examination of the coexistence of these behavioral abnormalities in the same population of poor readers has yet to take place. The present stud

Reading ability and efficiency of graphemic-phonemic encoding.

It was hypothesized that children with a specific reading disability differ from children of normal reading ability because the former are impaired in extracting speech-like representations from graphemes. Three groups of 12 each of grade school boys and girls participated in timed word comparison tasks which required a "same-different" response. One group was specifically reading deficient, the other groups were matched either on age or on reading level to a deficient group. Monosyllabic word pairs were presented simultaneously by a slide projector. The deficient readers were slower than the

Temporal dynamics of integration and individuation: Insights from temporal averaging and crowding.

Individuating a single item presented within a continuous sequence of items requires segregating its signal from that of the other items. In contrast, representing a global aspect of the sequence, such as its average orientation, involves integration of information across time. Individuation and integration allow us to focus on individual events while maintaining an overall perception of our environment. To examine the relations between temporal averaging and individuation, we measured orientation averaging over short and long timescales using the same stimuli and orientation-estimation proced
