"Epizoonosis of dermatophytosis": a clinico- mycological study of dermatophytic infections in central Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Identification of dermatophytic species in clinical settings are important not only for epidemiological but also for the treatment. OBJECTIVES: Present study was carried out to find out the clinical variants of Dermatophytosis and species of fungus responsible for the disease. METHODS: The prospective observational analysis of 200 clinically suspected cases of dermatophytic infection attending Dermatology department of College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal. Skin scraping, hair and nail samples were collected and processed according to standard p

Epidemiology of common transmissible skin diseases among primary school children in north-west Ethiopia.

A total of 1842 school children were examined for the occurrence of common transmissible skin infections in a rural area in North-West Ethiopia. The result showed a prevalence rate of 49.2%. Tinea capitis, impetigo, infected wounds and verrucae vulgaris were common. In addition the overall prevalence rate of lice infestation was 55.4%. The findings indicated the need to develop appropriate intervention programmes both at school and community levels.

The significance of itraconazole for treatment of fungal infections of skin, nails and mucous membranes.

Itraconazole is an antifungal drug from the triazole group with distinct in vitro activity against dermatophytes, yeasts and some molds. In the oral therapy of tinea capitis, itraconazole plays an especially important role, in particular for disease caused by Microsporum canis (for children, however, only off-label use is feasible currently). A comprehensive review on superficial mycoses, classification, conventional/new therapeutic approaches and fungal-drug resistance.

Mycoses (fungal infections) are highly emerging threat to public health globally. Among six million fungal species, less than 1 % is pathogenic and infects peoples. Most of them affecting skin, nail and hair, which are very common diseases known as superficial mycosis. These diseases include superficial candidiasis (vaginal, cutaneous, oropharyngeal), malasseziaspp (seborrhoeic, pityriasis versicolor) and dermatophytosis (ring warm, tinea pedis, tinea capitis). In particular cases, superficial infections may cause invasive infections, whose occurrence is growing partly owing to an escalation i…

Childhood Exposure to Low to Moderate Doses of Ionizing Radiation and the Risk of Vascular Diseases.

In the Tinea Capitis Study (Israel, 1966-2011), we assessed the association between childhood exposure to low to moderate doses of ionizing radiation (IR) to the head and neck and the development of vascular diseases (ischemic heart disease, carotid artery stenosis, and stroke) in adulthood. The study included 17,734 individuals from the Tinea Capitis cohort (7,408 irradiated in childhood and 10,326 nonirradiated), insured by Israel's largest health provider. Individual dosimetry was estimated based on measurements made on a head phantom and original treatment records. The mean doses were 1.5,…

Background. Dermatophytosis is common worldwide and continues to increase. Objective. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence … and 45-64 years were more affected. T. violaceum was the most common pathogen in tinea unguium and tinea capitis, whereas T. mentagrophytes was the most common pathogen in tinea pedis. Conclusion. Further intensive epidemiological studies of ring worm fungus induced dermatophytosis which have public health significance are needed.

CONCLUSIONS: This finding highlights an unusual trend in the epidemiology of pediatric superficial mycoses compared with what has been reported to date and may suggest the need to reassess diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in …

Epidemiology of dermatomycoses in children living in Northern Greece 1996-2000.

In the 5-years period, 1996-2000, 1045 children under 13 years old were examined for suspected dermatomycosis. In 611 cases fungi were isolated. Male children were mainly affected on the scalp and body area. Girls were more affected in the location of the arms and legs. There was a greater proportion of cases in the age range 2-12 years. The most prominent fungus was Microsporum canis (515 cases) followed by Trichophyton rubrum (34) and Candida albicans (20). Tinea capitis (280 cases) mainly caused by M. canis (276 cases) was the most common clinical form. Tinea corporis (109 cases) mainly cau…

Consensus of the role and positioning of the imidazoles in the treatment of dermatophytosis.

The imidazoles have been appreciated for approximately fifteen years as a family of antifungals. Most derivatives, like the protype compounds, miconazole and clotrimazole, are effective only in a topical dose form. The topical imidazoles are generally thought to be superior to other topical antifungals. The first orally available imidazole, ketoconazole has ushered in a new era of potent, oral, broad-spectrum antifungal therapy. The imidazoles as a class are the treatment of choice for four dermatophyte infection syndromes. They are the preferred alternative therapy in another six syndromes. T

Minipreparation of total cellular DNA is useful as an alternative molecular marker of mitochondrial DNA for the identification of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum.

Total cellular DNA was extracted from 18 isolates of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and six isolates of unidentified Trichophyton species taken from tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis patients by a minipreparation method. The DNA was digested with the restriction enzymes HaeIII and MspI, followed by electrophoresis on agarose gels. The restriction enzyme profiles of the DNAs were compared with those of mitochondrial (mt) DNA extracted from reference strains of T. mentagrophytes (Arthroderma simii, A. benhamiae and A. vanbreuseghemii) and T. rubrum. All 18 T. mentagrophytes isolates show

Cutaneous disease in black children.

Understanding cutaneous disease in the black races requires that the physician first be able to discern normal from abnormal pigmentary patt … de spectrum of folliculitides rarely seen in whites. Methods of hair care commonly cause alopecias. Tinea capitis, which mimics four other varied scalp diseases, is now almost exclusively seen in blacks. Infesations, such as scabies and pediculosis capitis, are almost unheard of in American blacks.
