A 13-year-old spayed female Pomeranian dog was presented for persistent, severe hypoglycemia (37 mg/dL; reference interval [RI] 75-128 mg/dL). Progressive nonregenerative anemia (hematocrit 23.3%-15.9%; RI 37.0%-55.0%) and severe thrombocytopenia (36 000/µL; RI 200-500 000/µL) were also noted. The serum insulin concentration was low (0.24 ng/mL; RI 0.302-1.277 ng/mL). Computed tomography revealed multiple splenic nodules (1-6 mm in diameter) and several hepatic nodules (7.6, 12 mm in diameter). Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of the splenic and hepatic nodules revealed low numbers of

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with tonsillar cancer (TC) whose incidence in humans is increasing. Tonsillar tumours are not ordinarily preceded by clinically apparent precancerous lesions, and no markers of the early stage disease are available. Therefore, we evaluated the presence of an active HPV infection also in tumour-free tonsillar tissue. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tonsillar specimens from 114 patients with TC and 114 age and gender matched controls were screened for the presence of HPV DNA, expression of HR-HPV E6 mRNA, and p16 overexpression. HPV DNA

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is increasing, but data on the incidence of synchronous, bilateral tonsillar squamous cell carcinomas (BiTSCCs) is sparse. In this study, we report the incidence and tumour characteristics of BiTSCCs in a population-based, consecutive cohort of OPSCCs.
METHODS: We identified all patients diagnosed with tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) in eastern Denmark during a 15-year period to detect the incidence of synchronous BiTSCCs. The tumours were assessed for p16Ink4a expression, the presence of HPV DNA and HPV gen

A fraction of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), especially in the tonsil, is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), mainly HPV16. Noninvasive diagnostic methods to detect precancerous lesions in the tonsil would be useful, e.g., liquid-based cytology (LBC). However, ill-characterized precancerous lesions may be hidden in the depth of the tonsillar crypts. We therefore conducted a study on HPV and tonsillar precancerous lesions to evaluate, among other things, the utility of LBC obtained by deep brushing of the resected tonsils. Two hundred non-paediatric patients (mean age: 30.3 years) who underwent

OBJECTIVES: Patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) have a reduced risk of developing second primary upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) tumours compared to patients with HPV-negative primary tumours at the same site. To determine whether this finding might be explained by a lack of viral-induced field cancerisation or multifocal infection, we investigated whether there was epithelial dysplasia and/or evidence of HPV infection at other pharyngeal mucosal sites in patients presenting with the disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three patien

Heterotopic calcification following head and neck irradiation has rarely been reported. It usually develops as a late complication of radiotherapy in patients with malignancies, including breast cancer, lymphoma, and genitourinary malignancies. The occurrence of heterotopic calcification in the prevertebral space of the cervical spine has not been described as a late complication of irradiation. Here, we report a case of prevertebral heterotopic calcification in a patient with history of chemotherapy and radiotherapy for tonsil cancer 21 years ago.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors occur in up to 15 % of patients with paraneoplastic syndromes. The temporal association between malignancy and paraneoplasia is variable. Dermatomyositis belongs to the facultative cutaneous paraneoplasia.
CASE REPORT: A patient presented with a cervical swelling and preexisting dermatomyositis. Staging revealed a tonsillar carcinoma with cervical, mediastinal and bone metastasis, and meningeal carcinomatosis. Systemic intrathecal chemotherapy was initiated.
CONCLUSION: Dermatomyositis has only been described four times worldwide as a paraneoplastic disease with

Myeloid sarcoma in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) manifesting as a non-healing tonsillar ulcer is an extremely rare occurrence. We report the case of a 57-year-old male smoker with a non-healing tonsillar ulcer who underwent tonsillectomy to rule out tonsillar carcinoma after failed antibiotic therapy. On postoperative day 2, he presented with a temperature of 40°C and white blood cell count of 34700/μL. Antibiotic therapy was begun; however, he died 1 day later due to pulmonary infection and septic shock. Though extremely rare, tonsillar involvement of MDS should be considered

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas quite often present in the head and neck but primary tonsillar lymphomas of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas are far less than 1% of head and neck malignancies. Reports of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (F-18 FDG PET/CT) related to primary tonsillar lymphoma are seldom. A 59-year-old man suffered from painful swelling of the bilateral tonsil. Biopsy diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. F-18 FDG PET/CT was performed for disease staging. Whole-body F-18 FDG PET/CT revealed the intense FDG uptake of bilateral tonsil with an additional small lymph no

OBJECTIVE: We present the first reported case in the English language literature of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the right tonsil in a young, pregnant woman, and we report a management strategy for this enigmatic entity.
CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old, pregnant woman presented with a 10-day history of odynophagia despite a course of antibiotics. Examination revealed a grade II, erythematous right tonsil with ulceration on the upper pole. A biopsy was arranged, and initial evaluation was suggestive of spindle cell carcinoma. However, this diagnosis was reviewed after immunohistochemic

OBJECTIVE: There is a significant debate over the need for tonsillectomy to rule out lymphoma in cases of unilateral tonsillar enlargement. Several publications have suggested that the presence of unilateral tonsillar enlargement in children was an ominous sign of the possibility of underlying lymphoma. More recently, some authors have recommended that routine tonsillectomy in this context is not indicated given the low incidence of tonsillar lymphoma in the pediatric population and the high cost associated with this procedure. The aim of this study is to determine whether or not children diag

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus 16 (HPV-16) has been implicated as a causative agent in a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). This study was undertaken to discern the distribution and timing of HPV viral integration during tumorigenesis of the upper respiratory tract.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A tissue array was assembled from a consecutive group of 176 patients with HNSCCs. The array was evaluated by HPV-16 in situ hybridization and p16 immunohistochemistry. Patients with HPV-positive tonsillar cancers who had undergone bilateral tonsillectomies were selected for more complete

OBJECTIVES: Controversy continues to exist regarding the necessity to routinely send for histologic examination those specimens obtained after tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy in children. Otolaryngologists fear missing an unsuspected diagnosis, such as a tonsil malignancy. However, given the rare incidence of this event, the cost-effectiveness ratio of routine microscopic analysis is questionable. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of clinically relevant unexpected diagnosis among children who underwent tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy in our units and

Oral manifestations of Crohn's disease may present to the Otolaryngologist in the form of ulceration, glossitis and odynophagia, but rarer examples of presentation are also recognized. In this case a 24-year-old lady presented with cervical lymphadenopathy, the subsequent investigation of which resulted in the identification of the disease both in this node and in the tonsils. It is noted that these lesions may precede the classical intestinal manifestations and so the Otolaryngologist could aid in the initial diagnosis of the disease. The pathogenic possibilities of how Crohn's disease might

We report a case of a 35-year-old man who died of a brain infarct 20 months after radiotherapy for carcinoma of the tonsil with metastases to the cervical lymph nodes. Histology revealed mild atherosclerosis, necrotizing vasculitis, and occlusive thrombosis of the internal carotid artery. Significant changes were observed in the vasa vasorum: swelling and detachment of the endothelium, subendothelial oedema, hyaline change, fibrinoid necrosis of the vessel walls with mononuclear cellular infiltration, accompanied by focal haemorrhages and chronic inflammation in the periadventitial soft tissue

In 37 patients with seemingly localized non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the Waldeyer's ring (WR-NHL), lymphangiography (LAG) and/or gallium-67 scans (Ga-67 scans) were done. Before these procedures, 20 patients were diagnosed as Stage I, and 17 as Stage II. LAG was done for 30, and Ga-67 scans for 32, 25 of whom had both. Five patients (16%) were upstaged to Stage III or IV by Ga-67 scans. Only one (3%) had abnormal LAG findings, in whom Ga-67 scans also showed abnormal accumulation in the para-aortic region. Because of this low positive rate, LAG is not recommended for staging of WR-NHL.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is classified in many subtypes or forms; one of them is the acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma, also called pseudoglandular, adenoid, epithelioma dyskeratoticum segregans, or adenoacanthoma. Researching and analyzing nine cases of acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma, we intend to verify if the data provided by the cases studied can be validated by the scientific literature. All the cases presented lesions found on the head and neck skin, with two exceptions - one on the larynx and the other one on the tonsil, all of them ulcerated lesions. In two cases, the tum

UNLABELLED: The new diagnostic method, intraoperative ultrasound is presented. There are very few publications in the literature, but they mainly concern the application of transcutaneous ultrasound in localizing the abscesses, their puncture and drainage. Intraoperative imaging of tongue, tonsil, larynx tumors, submandibular and parotid glands and neck masses have been provided by means of a linear 7.5 MHz probe in Poznań ENT Dept. K. Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences. The application of this method is pioneer and new. The aim of the study was to compare the sensitivity and the spec
