[Root resection: tooth preservation by targeting the root of the problem].

When problems occur in multirooted teeth, such as persistent endodontic problems following endodontic treatment, problems involving fracture or furcation, extraction may be decided on. However, removal of the tooth will result in loss of occlusal units and the alveolar process. By removing the compromised root and preserving the healthy part, the tooth can remain functional, but only after restorative treatment. A correct indication or diagnosis, a properly performed endodontic, restorative and surgical treatment and proper follow-up are mandatory for a successful treatment outcome.

Ultrasound in Dentistry: Toward a Future of Radiation-Free Imaging.

Ultrasonography (US) is a noninvasive, nonionizing, inexpensive, and painless imaging tool proven to be a valuable diagnostic tool in soft tissue assessment that also shows promise for hard tissue evaluation in dentistry. US has been investigated for its capability to identify carious lesions, tooth fractures or cracks, periodontal bony defects, maxillofacial fractures, and more. It has been used as a diagnostic aid in temporomandibular disorders, implant dentistry, and to measure muscle and soft tissue thickness. Unfortunately, the use of US in dentistry is still in its infancy; however, rele…

Management of an uncomplicated crown fracture by reattaching the fractured fragment-Case report.

Coronal fractures of the anterior teeth are common sequelae of traumatic dental injuries. Reattachment of fractured tooth fragments using dental adhesive techniques offers some advantages, including restoration of the function, esthetics, shape, texture, and brightness of the surface. The present report describes a clinical case of reattachment with a 4-year clinical and radiographic follow up in a permanent maxillary central incisor with an uncomplicated crown fracture. Fragment reattachment is a conservative procedure, preserving esthetics and functionality, and it can provide an immediate p

Repair characteristics of horizontal root fracture: a case report.

Radicular fractures in permanent teeth are uncommon injuries among dental traumas, comprising 0.5-7% of the cases. Fracture occurs most often in the middle-third of the root and rarely at the apical-third. The present paper reports a clinical case of a horizontal radicular fracture located between the middle- and apical-third of a upper left-central incisor followed-up for over 3 years. The tooth was extracted owing to periodontal reasons. Histomorphologically, it showed pulp-vitality preservation and root healing by hard-tissue deposition.

Effect of endodontic access type on the resistance to fracture of maxillary incisors.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of endodontic access cavity location--labial versus palatal--on the resistance to fracture of maxillary incisors. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Sixty intact human maxillary incisors were selected: 20 pairs of central incisors and 10 pairs of lateral incisors. From each pair, 1 tooth was randomly selected to receive a palatal access cavity; the other tooth of the same pair received a labial access cavity. The teeth were divided into 4 test groups: group 1, central incisors with labial access; group 2, central incisors with palatal access; group 3, lateral incisors with

Effects of different splinting times on surgically extruded teeth with a crown-root fracture: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Clinical studies evaluating the splinting time for surgically extruded teeth with crown-root fractures are lacking. The aim of this study was to compare 2-week splinting versus functional splinting times after surgical extrusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Children aged 8-13 years who presented with crown-root fractures were included. Surgical extrusion was performed, and teeth were splinted either for 2 weeks or until normal Periotest values were achieved (functional splinting time). The outcome measures were tooth mobility, tooth loss, root resorption, marginal bone resorption an

Association between dental diseases and oral hygiene care and the risk of vertebral fracture: a nationwide cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Periodontal disease and increased missing teeth were associated with incident vertebral fractures. In contrast, professional dental cleaning and frequent tooth brushing, was associated with a lower risk of vertebral fracture. Better oral hygiene care attenuated the risk associated with dental diseases. PURPOSE: To investigate the association between oral health and the risk of vertebral fractures. METHODS: We included 2,532,253 individuals aged ≥40 years who underwent the Korean National Health Insurance Service health examinations in 2008 and followed up until December 31, 2017.

Pulpal and periodontal reactions of immature permanent teeth in the dog to intrusive trauma.

Pulpal and periodontal tissues of immature incisors of 10 dogs were radiographically and histopathologically evaluated immediately, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after experimental intrusion induced by mechanical blows. Forty upper central and mesial lateral incisors showing incomplete root formation on radiographs were submitted to intrusive force. After the observation periods, the dogs were killed, two at a time. The hemi-maxilas were removed and processed for histopathologic examination. The traumatized teeth showed accelerated apical formation with reduced radicular length. Pulpal vitality was ma

Atypical dento-alveolar fracture fixed with screws: a technical note.

Dento-alveolar process fracture is an important and common event in the dental office practice usually managed under the well-established protocols, but sometimes this kind of lesion is evaluated in the hospital emergency rooms without attention to the dental injuries. In this type of trauma, the time between the injury and the definitive resolution is essential for the treatment success, usually 1 h in cases of dento-alveolar fractures (tooth and alveolar bone). This paper describes the management of a patient with unusual dento-alveolar fracture caused by gunshot and treated using screw fixa

Effect of Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate on the Microhardness and Fracture Resistance of Irradiated Permanent Human Teeth: An In Vitro Study.

Introduction Radiotherapy, one of the most important modalities of treating head and neck cancer, causes xerostomia, mucositis, and structural and chemical changes in dental hard tissues. These factors favour the commencement of radiation-induced caries. Aim The study aimed to evaluate the changes in enamel microhardness and fracture resistance after irradiation and the effect of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on the same. Materials and methods Fifty extracted human premolar teeth were debrided and cleansed using an ultrasonic scaler. In order to test for fracture

[Preservation of alveolar bone of un-restorable traumatized maxillary incisors for future].

UNLABELLED: Anterior maxillary implantation is a challenging treatment for both the surgeon and prosthodontist due to high esthetic demands in this area. However, it is the most traumatized and most exposed region to habits. Prompt and appropriate management can significantly improve prognosis of many dentoalveolar injuries, especially in young patients. Unfortunately, many traumatized teeth are overtreated or left untreated, which lead to a much more complicated treatment at the time of permanent restoration at adulthood. The facial cortical plate over the roots of the maxillary teeth is thin
