Over the past 10 years, the understanding, assessment, and management of hip pain and injuries in the athlete have improved. Traditionally, the evaluation of hip pain and injuries was limited to obvious disorders, such as hip arthritis and fractures, or disorders that were previously considered to be simply soft-tissue strains and contusions, such as groin pulls, hip pointers, and bursitis. Two parallel tracks of progress have improved understanding of the complexities of hip joint athletic injuries and the biomechanical basis of early hip disease. In the field of sports medicine, improved dia

By means of a questionnaire with a complementary interview and physical examination, the site and nature of sports injuries were investigated over a 10-year period (1977-1987) in 97 elderly athletes (age range 70-81 years). The athletes were still active in training and competition with a mean competition background of 15 years. Of the subjects studied 30 were strength/power athletes and the remaining 67 endurance athletes. Altogether we found 273 sports-related injuries (169 acute and 104 overuse injuries). Of the injuries 75% had occurred in the lower extremities. The most commonly injured p

Cochlear implants (CIs) restore hearing in people with severe-to-profound hearing loss, but how behavioral and neural adaptations unfold after implantation remains unclear, particularly during continuous speech processing. Most longitudinal studies of postimplant plasticity have used simple auditory stimuli, limiting insight into continuous-speech processing in complex environments. We followed 19 newly implanted adult CI users at activation and at 3, 6, and 12 mo after activation. At each session, participants completed speech recognition testing in quiet and noise, a spatial triple-digit tes

Human motion tracking is a valuable task for many medical applications. Marker-based optoelectronic systems are considered the gold standard in human motion tracking. However, their use is not always feasible in clinics and industrial environments. On the other hand, marker-less sensors became valuable tools, as they are inexpensive, noninvasive and easy to use. However, their accuracy can depend on many factors including sensor positioning, light conditions and body occlusions. In this study, following previous works on the feasibility of marker-less systems for human motion monitoring, we in

Research on dynamic events in living cells, such as intracellular transportation, is important for understanding cell functions. As movements occur within cells, the microenvironment of the moving vesicles or biomacromolecules may affect the behavior of them. Herein, we propose a method of simultaneously monitoring changes in spatial positions and the local environment related to the fluorescence lifetime, i.e., four-dimensional (4D) multi-particle parallel-tracking in living cells. Based on double-helix point spread function (DH-PSF) microscopy and streak camera, the method combines three-dim

Acute alcohol intoxication and alcohol use disorders are characterized by a wide range of psychological and cerebral impairments, which have been widely explored using neuropsychological and neuroscientific techniques. Eye tracking has recently emerged as an innovative tool to renew this exploration, as eye movements offer complementary information on the processes underlying perceptive, attentional, memory or executive abilities. Building on this, the present systematic and critical literature review provides a comprehensive overview of eye tracking studies exploring cognitive and affective p

Behavioral inflexibility is a common symptom of neuropsychiatric disorders which can have a major detrimental impact on quality of life. While the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) has been strongly implicated in behavioral flexibility in rodents across paradigms, our understanding of how the OFC mediates these behaviors is rapidly adapting. Here we examined neuronal activity during reversal learning by coupling in vivo electrophysiological recording with a mouse touch-screen learning paradigm to further elucidate the role of the OFC in updating reward value. Single unit and oscillatory activity was

In comparison to other similarly sized mantis species examined in previous studies, Euchomenella macrops has a significantly smaller head, shorter foreleg tibia, but longer prothorax which have been interpreted as specializations for the capture of smaller, slower prey. We tested this conjecture by assessing the rates at which computer generated stimuli elicit visual tracking, approaching, and striking behaviors by adult females. When presented with black disks moving erratically against a white background, strike rate rose progressively as disks enlarged up to 44 deg (visual angle) if the dis

OBJECTIVE: The proliferation of algorithms in period and fertility tracking technologies has increased reliance on data and analytics to interpret menstrual cycle symptoms and guide health and fertility-related action. We set out to map the ethical concerns of the (often invisible) algorithmic influence on users' experience of, and behavior related to their menstrual cycle and fertility.
STUDY DESIGN: Reviewing literature and media, we map six ethical concerns of algorithms in period and fertility tracking technologies - inconclusive evidence, inscrutable evidence, misguided evidence, unfair

Delivery of therapeutic or diagnostic agents across an intact blood-brain barrier (BBB) remains a major challenge. Here we demonstrate in a mouse model that magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can cross the normal BBB when subjected to an external magnetic field. Following a systemic administration, an applied external magnetic field mediates the ability of MNPs to permeate the BBB and accumulate in a perivascular zone of the brain parenchyma. Direct tracking and localization inside endothelial cells and in the perivascular extracellular matrix in vivo was established using fluorescent MNPs. These M

Neurons in posterior parietal cortex of the awake, trained monkey respond to passive visual and/or somatosensory stimuli. In general, the receptive fields of these cells are large and nonspecific. When these neurons are studied during visually guided hand movements and eye movements, most of their activity can be accounted for by passive sensory stimulation. However, for some visual cells, the response to a stimulus is enhanced when it is to be the target for a saccadic eye movement. This enhancement is selective for eye movements into the visual receptive field since it does not occur with ey

PURPOSE: This review discusses the role of clinical pharmacology in the development of low-dose aspirin and other antiplatelet agents during the past 30 years, emphasizing the main determinants of several success stories as well as of complete failures in the field.
METHODS: The author employs personal appraisal of the literature, with emphasis on personal contributions to the field.
FINDINGS: Low-dose aspirin provides an interesting paradigm of the independent development of a "new" antiplatelet agent by the medical/scientific community. Aspirin "resistance," improved dosing regimens for pe

Warmer temperatures are expected to increase the incidence of Lyme disease through enhanced tick maturation rates and a longer season of transmission. In addition, there could be an increased risk of disease export because of infected mobile hosts, usually birds. A temperature-driven seasonal model of Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) transmission among four host types is constructed as a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The model is developed and parametrized based on a collection of lab and field studies. The model is shown to produce biologically reasonable results for

Misalignment of the visual axes of the eyes observed in strabismus may result from sensory, motor, and/or central nervous system disorders. The functional properties of a technique designed to increase, through training, the monocular motor control of normal human subjects was evaluated, the ultimate goal being obviously to apply the technique to cases of minor strabismus. The subject is seated in front of a television screen. A diaphragm extending from the subject's head to the screen divides the picture into two visually separated half fields. A micro-computer was programmed to project two p

Plague, a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, causes high rates of mortality in prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.). An oral vaccine against plague has been developed for prairie dogs along with a palatable bait to deliver vaccine and a biomarker to track bait consumption. We conducted field trials between September 2009 and September 2012 to develop recommendations for bait distribution to deliver plague vaccine to prairie dogs. The objectives were to evaluate the use of the biomarker, rhodamine B, in field settings to compare bait distribution strategies, to compare uptake of b

BACKGROUND: Compass (CenterVue, Padova, Italy) is a fundus automated perimeter which has been introduced in the clinical practice for glaucoma management in 2014. The aim of the article is to review Compass literature, comparing its performances against Humphrey Field Analyzer (Zeiss Humphrey Systems, Dublin, CA, USA).
RESULTS: Analyses on both normal and glaucoma subjects agree on the fact that Humphrey Field Analyzer and Compass are interchangeable, as the difference of their global indices is largely inferior than test -retest variability for Humphrey Field Analyzer. Compass also enables i
