OBJECTIVE: Increased intracerebral blood velocity measured by transcranial Doppler scanning identifies children with sickle cell anemia who are at increased risk of stroke. We have tried to develop an index based on routine clinical measurements that also predicts increased intracerebral blood flow.
METHOD: Routinely collected clinical and laboratory data were correlated with transcranial Doppler measurements on children with sickle cell anemia seen in a single institution in 2006. The index produced was validated on a second independent data set from children with sickle cell anemia.

The prevalence of substantial inflammation or fibrosis in treatment-naïve patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and normal alanine transaminase (ALT) levels is high. AIMS: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a global health problem caused, among other factors, by oxidative stress from the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). One important source of ROS is microsomal ethanol metabolism catalyzed by cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), which is induced by chronic ethanol consumption. Inhibition of CYP2E1 by clomethiazole (CMZ) decreases oxidative stress in cell cultures and improves ALD in animal studies. Our study aimed to assess the benefits of a CYP2E1 inhibitor (clomethiazole) in detoxification of patients with ALD.

Important glutamic acid metabolising enzymes in brain namely GAD, GABA-A and GLDH have been studied in the CSF of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), pyogenic meningitis (PM) and brain tumor (BT). The levels of GAD were reported as picomoles of GABA formed/mg of protein/hour. The control levels of the enzymes were GAD = 129 +/- 54, GABA-T = 533 +/- 146 and GLDH...O. 198 +/- 0.097. The levels of GAD were significantly increased (P < 0.001), in both TBM and PM, the values were 302 +/- 81 and, 290 +/- 97 respectively. The GABA-T levels were significantly raised (P < 0.001) only in PM cases 639 +/- 171.
