Upper Extremity Wood Saw Injuries: Experience at a Single Level 1 Trauma Center.

BACKGROUND: Saw injuries are common, with more 75 000 occurring each year in the United States alone. While these injuries occur frequently, management strategies are not universally agreed upon, and data regarding outcomes and complications are lacking. We propose to provide a comprehensive picture of upper extremity saw injury patterns, management strategies, complications, and outcomes. METHODS: Patients presenting to a single level 1 trauma center between 2012 and2019 with upper extremity laceration, crush, or amputation were identified. In all, 10 721 patients were reviewed, and those wi

Epidemiological profile of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in a tertiary referral trauma center of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Sports related injuries are the leading cause of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear in the Western world. Although professional and recreational sporting activities are increasing in Nepal, they are not as common and prevalent in comparison to western world. In contrast, Road Traffic Accident (RTA) is a very common cause of knee injuries in Nepal. Although there are some studies from Nepal mentioning Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) as the most common cause of ACL injury, no specific studies have primarily investigated the epidemiological and demographic profile of ACL injured pati

Management of Traumatic Atlantooccipital Dissociation at a Level 1 Trauma Center: A Retrospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Atlantooccipital dislocation (AOD) is a highly unstable and often neurologically devastating injury to the craniocervical junction that typically results from high-energy trauma. Management of these devastating injuries is complex, with prognostication difficult due to high rates of concomitant intracranial and systemic injuries. This report highlights advances in management of AOD and appropriate implementation of operative adjuncts including neuronavigation and the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring. METHODS: All patients with AOD presenting to a high-volume, level 1 trauma ce

Child and Parent Perspectives on the Acceptability of Virtual Reality to Mitigate Medical Trauma in an Infusion Center.

INTRODUCTION: Children may experience medical trauma when undergoing medical procedures even when procedures are minor. While virtual reality (VR) is effective for managing procedural pain and anxiety, few studies address how families feel about using VR. We explore pediatric patient and guardian views regarding the acceptability of using VR during procedures to mitigate medical trauma. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews with 18 patient-guardian dyads at a tertiary outpatient infusion center for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment. Interviews explored how VR may change the

Eighteen years' experience of traumatic subclavian vascular injury in a tertiary referral trauma center.

PURPOSE: Traumatic subclavian vascular injury (TSVI) is rare but often fatal. The precise diagnosis of TSVI remains challenging mainly because of its occult nature, less typical presentations, and being overlooked in the presence of polytrauma. Compared to penetrating injuries, it is even more difficult to identify TSVI in patients who have blunt injuries and no visible bleeding. The risk factors associated with TSVI in patients with thoracic trauma are unclear. The aims of this study were to identify risk factors for TSVI in a cohort of patients with thoracic vascular injuries and to report o

Helmets Matter: Kentucky All-Terrain Vehicle Crashes Seen at a Tennessee Trauma Center.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety laws, including helmet use, vary by state and are sporadically enforced. Kentucky state laws require safety helmets only for younger riders. We hypothesized that ATV riders injured in Kentucky and seen at a Tennessee trauma center would more likely be unhelmeted, have more severe head injuries, and have higher mortality rates than those injured in Virginia or Tennessee. A Trauma Registry review of 750 injured ATV riders from June 1, 2005, through June 1, 2015 examined state location of accident, helmet use, markers of injury severity, and outcomes. Multiple log
