Ruavermis mikebargeri gen. et sp. n. (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea) infecting the yellow-headed temple turtle, Heosemys annandalii (Cryptodira: Geoemydidae), in Vietnam, including an updated phylogeny for the turtle blood flukes.

Ruavermis mikebargeri gen. et sp. n. infects the yellow-headed temple turtles Heosemys annandalii (Boulenger et Robinson) in the Mekong River Basin. It resembles Platt Roberts et Bullard, 2018 and Coeuritrema Mehra, 1933 by having the anterior to posterior anatomical sequence of a ventral sucker, external seminal vesicle, cirrus sac, anterior testis, ovary, transverse vitelline duct, and posterior testis. These genera are further similar by having the combination of an elongate/ovoid aspinous body, a ventral sucker at the level of the body constriction, an oesophagus that terminates in the ant

First record of Paratanaisia bragai (Digenea: Eucotylidae) in blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna).

The aim of this study was to provide the first report on a new host for the digenean Paratanaisia bragai in the caninde macaw Ara ararauna along with the pathological aspects of the infection in the new host. The microscopic findings revealed the presence of granulomatous interstitial nephritis. This study contributes towards knowledge of parasitism by P. bragai in A. ararauna, and emphasizes the need to use best practices in wildlife conservation parks.

[THE EMISSION OF PLAGIORCHIS MULTIGLANDULARIS CERCARIAE FROM NATURALLY INFECTED SNAILS LYMNAEA STAGNALIS IN CHANY LAKE, SOUTH OF WEST SIBERIA].

The daily cercarial output of freshwater trematode Plagiorchis multiglandularis from naturally infected snail Lymnaea stagnalis were studied. The snails were collected in the Chany Lake (South of West Siberia). The daily cercarial output from the snail of different size was determined. The average daily cercarial output ranged from 4641 ± 1829 at the snail with shell length 29 mm to 14022 ± 5198 at the snail with shell length 44 mm. The positive correlation between the average daily cercarial output and the shell of snail host was found (p ≤ 0.001). The maximum of P. multiglandularis cercariae

Chronic pathology and longevity of Drepanocephalus spathans infections in juvenile Channel Catfish.

Drepanocephalus spathans (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) is a common parasite of the double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus. The cercariae of D. spathans have been shown infective to juvenile Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus. The developing metacercariae concentrate in the cranial regions, often occluding blood vessels at the base of the branchial arch, occasionally resulting in death. The purpose of this study was to determine how long metacercariae of D. spathans persist in experimentally challenged Channel Catfish. Two separate infectivity trials were conducted. In both trials, metac

Alaria alata mesocercariae in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in Germany.

Alaria alata is a trematode of carnivores from Europe. The mesocercarial stage was recently identified in wild boar meat from Europe. Previous histopathologic studies showed the presence of unidentified parasitic cysts within the tongues of raccoons from northern Germany. For identification of the parasite species, tissue samples of 105 raccoons originating from a National Park in northern Germany and from Berlin metropolitan area were collected. Histological examination of cryotome sections of frozen as well as paraffin-embedded tongues were used to identify parasite cysts. These were located

Microphallus koreana n. sp. (Trematoda: Microphallidae) transmitted by a marine crab, Macrophthalmus dilatatus.

Microphallus species occur primarily as intestinal parasites of birds and mammals, and metacercariae of a new species belonging to this genus have been discovered from the crab, Macrophthalmus dilatatus, in the Republic of Korea. The metacercaria of this fluke was round with 2 thick walls, and the excysted one had mature genital organs. The adult flukes recovered from experimentally infected chicks had numerous intrauterine eggs, well-developed pars prostatica, widely bifurcating ceca, and prominent uterine bulge. After observing internal structures, it was concluded that this species is diffe

Schistosomes causing cercarial dermatitis: a mini-review of current trends in systematics and of host specificity and pathogenicity.

The human infection known under the names cercarial dermatitis or swimmers' itch is generally associated with swimming in lakes all over the world, however, a number of outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis developing in salt or brackish waters are also reported. The disease presents as allergic reaction which is able to trap and eliminate the parasites in the skin. However, the infection can be linked to more than skin symptoms under certain circumstances. Recent studies on bird schistosomes have shown that during primary infections of noncompatible hosts (mice) the parasites may migrate through

Tinamutrema canoae n. gen. et n. sp. (Trematoda: Digenea: Strigeiformes: Brachylaimidae) in Crypturellus cinnamomeus (Aves, Passeriformes, Tinamidae) from the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

We propose Tinamutrema as a new genus for Brachylaima centrodes (Braun, 1901) Dollfus, 1935 and for T. canoae, as a new species inhabiting tinamus in the Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Specimens from Costa Rica resemble B. centrodes in having an elongate body, pretesticular genital pore and terminal genitalia, intercecal uterine loops occupying all available space between the anterior testis and the intestinal bifurcation, an oral sucker width:pharynx width ratio of approximately 1:0.55, an oral sucker:ventral sucker width ratio of approximately 1:1, and vitelline follicles exten

Studies on cardiovascular fluke (Digenea: Spirorchiidae) infections in sea turtles from the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia.

Twenty-seven sea turtles (23 Chelonia mydas and four Eretmochelys imbricata) from northeast Queensland were found to be infected with cardiovascular flukes and/or their eggs. Five had originated from turtle farms in the Torres Strait, five from an oceanarium on Magnetic Island (146 degrees 56'E, 19 degrees S) and the remainder from coral reefs in the Torres Strait or near Townsville. The incidence of flukes and/or eggs in the groups was 4.8 per cent (5 of 104), 33.3 per cent (5 of 15) and 72.2 per cent (17 of 22), respectively. Affected animals ranged in size from 18 to 108 cm (curved carapace

Lymphocyte and cytokine responses of young cattle during primary infection with Fasciola hepatica.

An experiment was designed to characterise the early immune responses of cattle given a trickle infection of the trematode Fasciola hepatica. Lymphocyte responses and IFNgamma production following stimulation with Fasciola antigens were measured. Animals were sequentially slaughtered at weeks 5, 7, 9 and 11 post-infection. Results demonstrated responses to fluke antigens and cytokine production (IFNgamma) from weeks 2-5 post-infection. These findings may suggest an early stimulation of IFNgamma production by peripheral blood lymphocytes following infection with F hepatica in cattle.

Respiratory symptoms and subcutaneous granuloma caused by mesocercariae: a case report.

A 38-year-old man with no history of pulmonary disease developed intermittent hives and bronchospasms shortly after returning from a hunting trip. Approximately one year later, examination of an excised subcutaneous nodule demonstrated infection with a mesocercaria (larval trematode). The morphology of the parasite was consistent with infection with a parasite of the Alaria spp. or Strigea spp. Eating undercooked wild goose meat during the hunting trip was the most likely source of infection. This appears to be the first report of human infection with mesocercariae acquired through the ingesti
