The Role of QuantiFERON®-TB Gold and Tuberculin Skin Test as Diagnostic Tests for Intraocular Tuberculosis in HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Patients in South Africa.

PURPOSE: To compare QuantiFERON®-TB Gold and tuberculin skin testing as diagnostic tests for intraocular tuberculosis in HIV positive and negative patients. METHODS: A prospective study evaluating two different tests to help diagnose intraocular tuberculosis. RESULTS: Thirty-five of 106 patients (33.0%) were diagnosed with intraocular tuberculosis including 11 (31.4%) with HIV infection. Patients were 6.95 times more likely to have intraocular tuberculosis if TST alone was positive (p < 0.001) versus 2.19 times more likely if Quantiferon alone was positive (p = 0.04). Tuberculin skin testing

Tuberculin skin tests following Bacille Calmette Guerin vaccination in Africa: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

Tuberculin reactivity following tuberculin skin test which is the most common measure of the effect of the Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination has remained complex. This protocol is aimed to assess the effect of BCG vaccine on tuberculin skin test in Africa as a guide to better understanding or resolving this complexity. A search strategy is developed using MeSH, key words, text words, and entry terms. Five databases will be searched, including PubMed, African Journals Online (AJOL), Google Scholar, Research Gate, and Cochrane Library. Only observational studies conducted in Sub-Saharan

Comparison of the QuantiFERON-TB and tuberculin skin test for detection of latent tuberculosis infection in cancer patients in a developing country.

Cancer patients have an increased risk of reactivation of latent tuberculosis infection. It is unknown which strategy on screening should be used in this population in developing countries. We aimed to determine the concordance between the tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON®-TB (QFT) assay in order to diagnose latent tuberculosis infection in cancer patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the agreement of diagnostic tests. Prevalence and agreement between tests were calculated. A logistic regression to assess predictors of discordance was performed. The accuracy of the TST to

Comparison of interferon gamma release assay & tuberculin skin tests for diagnosis of latent tuberculosis in patients on maintenance haemodialysis.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) is a common infection in patients on haemodialysis. There is a definite role of treatment of latent TB (LTB) in these patients. However, diagnosis of LTB in these patients by tuberculin skin test (TST) is unreliable. There is suggestion that interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) will be more reliable test for diagnosis of LTB in this setting. Thus, we evaluated value of IGRA and TST for the diagnosis of LTB in patients on dialysis in an Indian setting. METHODS: Patients with end stage kidney disease on dialysis were included. Patients with active TB

Interferon-Gamma Release Assays versus Tuberculin Skin Testing for the Diagnosis of Latent Tuberculosis Infection: An Overview of the Evidence.

A profusion of articles have been published on the accuracy and uses of interferon-gamma releasing assays. Here we review the clinical applications, advantages, and limitations of the tuberculin skin test and interferon-gamma release assays and provide an overview of the most recent systematic reviews conducted for different indications for the use of these tests. We conclude that both tests are accurate to detect latent tuberculosis, although interferon-gamma release assays have higher specificity than tuberculin skin testing in BCG-vaccinated populations, particularly if BCG is received afte

Determining Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection among BCG-immunised Ugandan children by T-SPOT.TB and tuberculin skin testing.

BACKGROUND: Children with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) represent a huge reservoir for future disease. We wished to determine Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) infection prevalence among BCG-immunised five-year-old children in Entebbe, Uganda, but there are limited data on the performance of immunoassays for diagnosis of tuberculosis infection in children in endemic settings. We therefore evaluated agreement between a commercial interferon gamma release assay (T-SPOT.TB) and the tuberculin skin test (TST; 2 units RT-23 tuberculin; positive defined as diameter ≥10 mm), along with the rep

Using tuberculin skin test as an entry point to screen for latent and active tuberculosis in Thai people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculin skin test (TST) identifies patients highly likely to benefit from isoniazid preventive therapy and tuberculosis (TB) prevalence may differ by TST status. We evaluated latent and active TB screening and diagnosis strategies among people living with HIV (PLHIV) incorporating TST as the initial screening step. METHODS: PLHIV attending services at the Thai Red Cross Anonymous Clinic during September 2006 to January 2008 were enrolled. TB disease was defined as any positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) specimen culture from sputum, urine, stool, lymph node aspiration, an

Five-year prospective study of tuberculin skin testing among new healthcare personnel at a university hospital in Thailand.

We determined the prevalence of a positive tuberculin skin test (TST) and the incidence of TST conversion among new healthcare personnel (HCP) in a hospital in Thailand. During 2005-2008, TST was performed on 1438 HCP and the prevalence of positive TST was 66.3%. Age, male gender, and the presence of Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) scar were associated with odds of positive TST (all P < 0.05). The incidence of TST conversion was 4.8 per 100 HCP-years. Nine (0.6%) HCP were diagnosed with active tuberculosis. The annual surveillance programme is important for the early diagnosis and prevention of

Neonatal BCG vaccine and response to the tuberculin test in BCG vaccinated children in contact with tuberculosis patients in Recife, Brazil.

This case-control study analyses the association between the tuberculin response and the neonatal BCG vaccine in 330 children under 15 who are home contacts of tuberculosis patients, taking into account risk factors for the transmission of infection. Interviews were conducted with 330 children, their parents or legal guardians. Chest X-rays were taken and the tuberculin test (TT) applied using 0.1 ml of PPD RT23, taking an induration reading of > or = 10 mm as the cut-off point for a positive test result. Prior BCG vaccination was ascertained by observing the presence of a scar on the deltoid …

[Comparison of effectiveness of BCG vaccination and preventive therapy in Japanese settings, with special emphasis on the sensitivity and specificity of tuberculin testing].

BACKGROUND: BCG vaccination in low prevalence countries is controversial. Most discussions have been done by the comparison of benefit, side effect and cost of BCG vaccination. No discussion has been done on the disadvantage of BCG vaccination from the point of view of loss of sensitivity and specificity of tuberculin test on the diagnosis of LTBI. METHOD: Three groups, i.e. the BCG vaccination group with preventive therapy under worsened sensitivity and specificity of tuberculin test due to previous BCG, no intervention group and non BCG vaccination group with preventive therapy under standa…

Predictive performance of interferon-gamma release assays and the tuberculin skin test for incident tuberculosis: an individual participant data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the comparative performance of purified protein derivative tuberculin skin tests (TST) and interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) for predicting incident active tuberculosis (TB) remains conflicting. We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis to directly compare the predictive performance for incident TB disease between TST and IGRA to inform policy. METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase from 1 January 2002 to 4 September 2020, and studies that were included in previous systematic reviews. We included prospective longitudinal studies in which participa

Estimating Tuberculin Skin Test Reactions among Children and Teenagers Who Received the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Vaccination at Birth: A Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculin skin reaction size is one indicator of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine efficacy and a way to diagnose latent infection. Several primary studies have examined this issue. Combining the results of these studies using a meta-analysis will provide reliable evidence regarding this indicator for policymakers. This study aimed to estimate the total frequency of different tuberculin skin test reactions among Iranian children and teenagers who received the BCG vaccination at birth. METHODS: National and international databanks were searched using relevant keywords. After

Relation between BCG vaccine scar and an interferon-gamma release assay in immigrant children with "positive" tuberculin skin test (≥10 mm).

BACKGROUND: Immigrants from countries with high incidence of tuberculosis (TB) are usually offered screening when they arrive to low incidence countries. The tuberculin skin test (TST) is often used. The interferon gamma release assays (IGRAs) are more specific and not affected by BCG vaccination. The aims of this study were 1. To see if there if there is a correlation between a positive IGRA (QFT) and presence of a BCG scar in children with TST ≥10 mm, 2. To compare the TST diameter with QFT result, 3. To see if chest X-ray can be omitted in QFT negative children despite TST ≥10 mm. METHODS:
