Human lymphocyte antigens (HLA) and Graves' disease in Turkey.

To evaluate the association of HLA types with Turkish patients with Graves' disease, HLA typing, clinical findings, and thyroid antibodies w … reviously described. The HLA DR4 antigen may contribute to the predisposition of Graves' disease in Turkey. The results suggest that HLA B7, B13, DR7, DQw2, and DQw3 may confer a protective effect for Graves' disease in Turkey. Patients carrying HLA B12, B18, and B44 haplotypes had a tendency to develop the disease at a later age. The difference from the …

SETTING: Elazig, Eastern Turkey. SUBJECTS: There were 5240 live births and stillbirths during the study period, 24 of whom had neural tube defect and of these 20 had anencephaly. Cardiac electrophysiologic study in children. Preliminary report from Turkey.

Eighteen children (10 females, 8 males; age range 5.5 to 17 years, median: 10 years) who suffered from recurrent syncope, drug refractory supraventricular tachycardia and atrioventricular block or bradycardia were evaluated by cardiac electrophysiologic study between August 1988-April 1990. During the study, basal intervals were measured and the conduction system and sinus node functions were investigated. In some patients the mechanism of the tachycardia was investigated and drug-electrophysiologic studies also performed. Two of 6 cases with recurrent syncope had positive electrophysiologic f

High incidence of neural tube defects in Bursa, Turkey.

A radiological survey of 1204 members of the population of Bursa revealed a high prevalence of spina bifida occulta (16.3%). Hospital deliveries in the area also showed a high incidence of anencephalus and spina bifida aperta (5.8 per 1000 total births) in the years 1983 to 1986. In the first 6 months of 1987, however, there was an increase in incidence to 20 per 1000 births (P less than 0.01). The possibility is raised that the Chernobyl disaster of May 1986 might have resulted in the elevation of the rate in an already susceptible population.

Genetic Diseases Mimicking Rheumatic Disorders: Insights From Southeastern Turkey.

A subset of genetic conditions, particularly skeletal dysplasias, comprises a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders characterized by abnormal bone development, joint stiffness, and short stature. Their musculoskeletal manifestations frequently mimic those of rheumatic diseases, especially Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), complicating accurate diagnosis. We conducted a comprehensive clinical, radiological, and molecular evaluation of 47 individuals (23 males, 24 females) from 22 distinct families who presented primarily with non-inflammatory musculoskeletal complaints. Genomic investig

Next-Generation Sequencing Infertility Panel in Turkey: First Results.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility is a complex pathophysiological disorder. At least 2000 genes are implicated in the etiology of male infertility, making it a very complex genetic condition. In cases of male infertility, genetic testing using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology may be useful for diagnosis. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to apply the diagnostic offer for genetic variant identification using an NGS panel. METHODS: We developed an NGS gene panel that we used in 85 infertile male patients. The panel consisted of 132 genes exploring the genetic causes of male infe

Reoviral Hepatitis in Young Turkey Poults-An Emerging Problem.

From January 2019 to April 2020, the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (MVDL) received cases of hepatitis and spiking mortality in young turkey poults (average age 15.5 days) from multiple turkey-producing states. Meat-type turkeys were mainly affected, with a few cases in breeders. Of 188 cases, 88 (47.5%) tested positive for reovirus by virus isolation, with most of the positive cases from 7 to 14-day-old birds (n = 42). Gross lesions consisted of hepatosplenomegaly with acute, multifocal necrosis in both liver and spleen. Microscopically, liver sections showed congestion of hepatic…

Breast cancer awareness among Afghan refugee women in Turkey.

UNLABELLED: Background Refugees and asylum-seekers have lower levels of cancer awareness and this contributes to low rates of screening and more advanced cancers at diagnosis, compared to non-refugee populations, due largely to reduced access to medical information and care. The global Afghan refugee population is rapidly increasing with the ongoing Afghan political crisis. The present study investigates breast cancer (BC) awareness among Afghan refugee women. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of Afghan refugee women residing in Turkey was performed in September 2021. A validated BC patient a…

MASP1-related 3MC syndrome in a patient from Turkey.

3MC syndrome is a rare condition manifesting with typical facial appearance, postnatal growth deficiency, skeletal manifestations, and genitourinary tract anomalies. 3MC is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in MASP1, COLEC11, or COLEC10. Here, we report an affected subject of Kurdish origin from Turkey presenting with facial dysmorphisms, such as, hypertelorism, blepharophimosis, blepharoptosis, highly arched eyebrows, umbilical hernia, and caudal appendage. These features were compatible with 3MC syndrome. Molecular analysis revealed a novel homozygous pathogenic variant, c.310C > T; p.…

This study aimed to document the dermatoses and their relationships with CD4+ T lymphocyte counts and clinical stages of disease among people living with HIV followed by our Clinical Department, to investigate the effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on findings and to compare with real-world data. Medical records of people living with HIV were analyzed retrospectively in our outpatient clinic from January 2005 to June 2017. Syphilis seroprevalence among HIV-infected males in Istanbul, Turkey.

Syphilis has become a serious issue for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients worldwide in recent years; however, the studies related to HIV coinfection and syphilis reinfections in Istanbul, Turkey, are limited. Our objective was to determine the seroprevalence of syphilis among HIV-infected men in the city which has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Turkey. Two hundred and forty four (244) HIV-positive men were evaluated at Istanbul Medical Faculty, Department of Medical Microbiology from March to June 2018. Serum samples were screened for the presence of antibodies a…

Population structure of Borrelia turcica from Greece and Turkey.

Borrelia turcica, a member of the reptile-associated Borrelia clade, is vectored by Hyalomma aegyptium. The only suggested reservoir hosts of B. turcica are tortoises of the genus Testudo. Borrelia turcica has been described to occur in several Southeastern European countries including Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece but so far nothing is known about the relationship of these populations and whether or how they are structured. Using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) on eight chromosomally located housekeeping loci (clpA, clpX, nifS, pepX, pyrG, recG, rplB and uvrA) we analyzed 43 B. turci…

Estimated burden of serious human fungal diseases in Turkey.

The current number of fungal infections occurring each year in Turkey is unknown. We estimated the burden of serious human fungal diseases based on the population at risk, existing epidemiological data from 1920 to 2017 and modelling previously described by the LIFE program (http://www.LIFE-worldwide.org). Among the population of Turkey (80.8 million in 2017), approximately 1 785 811 (2.21%) people are estimated to suffer from a serious fungal infection each year. The model used predicts high prevalences of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis episodes (312 994 cases) (392/100 000), of severe asthma…
