There is little knowledge about macroscopic electrical propagation in the wall of the urinary bladder. Recording simultaneously from a large number of extracellular electrodes is one technology that could be used to study the patterns of macroscopic electrical propagations. The urinary bladders from 14 guinea pigs were isolated and placed in an organ bath. A 16 × 4-electrode array was positioned at various sites on the serosal bladder surface, and recordings were performed at different intravesical volumes. In four experiments, carbachol (CCH; 10(-6) M), nifedipine (10 mM), or tetrodotoxin (TT…

BACKGROUND: Bladder neck needle suspension is an operation traditionally used for moderate or severe stress urinary incontinence in women. About a third of adult women experience some urinary incontinence, and about a third of these have moderate or severe symptoms.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of needle suspension on stress or mixed urinary incontinence in comparison with other management options.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Group Specialised Register, which contains trials identified from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLIN

More than ninety percent of bladder neoplasm is Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC). About 85% of patients present with symptom of painless haematuria. However haematuria is quite often intermittent so that a negative result has little meaning in ruling out the presence of bladder cancer. The present study was conducted to observe the natural history of different clinicopathologic stages of bladder cancer after transurethral resection bladder tumor (TURBT), either intravescical chemotherapy (IVC) or immunotherapy with BCG and of other forms of therapy like radio-chemotherapy (RCT) and radical su

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the urinary bladder is rare. In the last five years, we have had the opportunity to see this type of cancer in an 88-year-old and in a 66-year-old males. In both cases, transurethral resection of carcinoma of the bladder was carried out. In the first case, urothelial carcinoma was detected and deeper in the bladder wall, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma structures were found. In the second case, the bladder was only infiltrated with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Both tumors expressed NSE, CD56 and synaptophysin. Other markers, such as those agai…

The authors present two cases of spontaneous intraperitoneal perforation of urinary bladder. The first case was a 56-year old female patient with history of urothelial cancer with partial urinary bladder resection and subsequent radiotherapy six years ago. The diagnostic laparoscopy was indicated because of the clinical signs of peritonitis. The diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a perforation of urinary bladder and the management of perforation was done laparoscopically. The histological examination of specimen revealed urothelial cancer. The postoperative course was uncomplicated and the patien…

A 10-day-old female alpaca (Vicugna pacos) cria with a history of urinary straining and dribbling was presented for evaluation. The animal had markedly elevated blood fibrinogen (800 mg/dl), mildly elevated phosphorus (9.3 mg/dl), and minimally elevated blood urea nitrogen (38 mg/dl) concentrations. The total protein (5.0 g/dl) concentration was mildly decreased. These findings were suggestive of mild renal disease. An abdominal ultrasound revealed bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter, and no urinary bladder was identified. Gross postmortem examination revealed urinary bladder agenesis and…

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive methods of predicting the risk of muscle-invasive urothelial bladder carcinoma may expedite appropriate therapy and reduce morbidity and cost.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Here, capillary electrophoresis coupled mass spectrometry was used to identify urinary polypeptide bladder cancer biomarkers in 127 patients. These markers were used to construct a panel discriminating muscle-invasive from noninvasive disease, which was refined in 297 additional samples from healthy volunteers, patients with malignant and nonmalignant genitourinary conditions. Sequencing of panel polypep

BACKGROUND: Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (biliary glycoprotein; CEACAM1) is expressed in normal bladder urothelium and in angiogenically activated endothelial cells, where it exhibits proangiogenic properties.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of urinary CEACAM1 for detection of urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective study included 175 patients.
MEASUREMENTS: Immunohistochemistry for CEACAM1 was performed on UCB sections of 10 patients. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for

INTRODUCTION: Signet-ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder can be primary - arising from the bladder wall or urachus remnants - or metastatic from tumors originating in the stomach, colon, or breast. Saphir first described primary signet-ring cell cancer of the urinary bladder in 1955. Less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature since then.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 45-year-old woman who was admitted with gross hematuria. Cystoscopy revealed a necrotic tumor on the left bladder wall. A transurethral biopsy showed signet-ring cell carcinoma. The bladder tumor was dia…

We studied the potential effects of taurine, a free radical scavenger, on chronic water avoidance stress (WAS)-induced degeneration of the mucosa of the urinary bladder in experimental rats. Wistar albino rats were exposed to WAS for 2h/day, for 5 days (WAS group). Before exposing them to WAS, taurine (50mg/kg) (WAS+taurine group) was injected intraperitonally into the animals. Samples of urinary bladder were then investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Lipid peroxidation and gluthathione levels were also measured in the urinary bladder. In the WAS-only group, inflammatory cell…

Urinary bladder adenocarcinomas are rare malignancies accounting for approximately 2.5% of all urothelial neoplasms. Intestinal metaplasia of the urothelium indicates the presence of intestinal-type goblet cells and was generally observed to coexist with or to precede the diagnosis of bladder adenocarcinomas. Controversy continues of whether intestinal metaplasia is an acquired precancerous lesion, secondary to different insults to the urothelium, or a concomitant lesion in glandular carcinogenesis. Patients with neurogenic bladders are particularly at risk for developing bladder cancer, mostl…

A 56-year-old man suffered from muscle weakness with elevated serum creatine kinase. Under diagnosis of polymyositis, the patient was treated with corticosteroid, methotrexate and cyclosporin A. Eleven months after the first signs of muscle weakness, the patient suffered an abrupt onset of anuria and underwent hemodialysis. The patient died of respiratory insufficiency 14 months after the first signs of muscle weakness. Autopsy findings revealed associated urinary bladder cancer with histological indications of adenosquamous cell carcinoma, liver metastasis and cancerous lymphangitis of the lu…

We report three cases of inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder. Case 1. A 19-year-old male complained of pollakisuria, gross hematuria and micturition pain. Cystoscopy revealed a smooth-surfaced tumor on a stalk at the bladder neck. The tumor was removed transurethrally. Histological diagnosis was inverted papilloma. As a safe guard, intravesical chemotherapy (Adriamycin) was performed, since pathological findings revealed a small region with mild atypical cells in the removed tumor. The patients has been subsequently followed up for ten years without any evidence of recurrence. Case 2. A …

At cystoscopy a focal mucosal abnormality may be indicative of a pathological process extrinsic to the urinary bladder and has been termed 'the herald lesion'. The aim of the present pictorial essay was to describe the radiographic counterpart to this cystoscopic finding. Radiographic herald lesions are shown in patients with extravesical inflammatory (Crohn's disease, colonic diverticulitis and pelvic inflammatory disease) and neoplastic (colon carcinoma) processes, and urinary tract complications of these conditions are described and illustrated.
