Parapharyngeal space tumour presenting as recurrent uvular oedema.

Neoplasms of the parapharyngeal space are uncommon and usually present as an intra-oral or neck mass. They often elude early diagnosis due to their deep-seated nature. Here we report a case presenting with recurrent oedema of the uvula. The pathophysiology of this previously unreported mode of presentation is discussed.

Anterior pillarplasty: a modification in cleft palate repair.

After the primary repair of cleft palate, surgeons are frequently confronted with a short soft palate and a wide velopharyngeal space, both of which are known to diminish the quality of speech. We introduce a new modification of the primary repair of cleft palate that lengthens the soft palate and helps to reduce the volume of the velopharyngeal space. Ten patients younger than 12 months with nonsyndromic cleft palate were operated on with this technique. The incision at the cleft margin extended behind the uvula as a modification to the classic design of mucoperiosteal flaps. The sagittally d

Primary tuberculosis of oral cavity: a rare entity revisited.

Oral lesions of tuberculosis though uncommon, are seen both in the primary as well as the secondary stages of the disease. In secondary tuberculosis, the oral manifestations are accompanied by lesions in the lung, lymph nodes, or any other organ system of the body. This can be detected by the usual clinical history and systemic examination. Primary oral tuberculosis may thus present as a diagnostic challenge to the clinician. Amongst the oral lesions also, tongue is the usual site for tubercular infection, with the upper lip and soft palate being the least affected. The authors report two rare

[Oral appliances in the treatment of snoring].

There are many methods of snoring treatment from conservative and prosthetic to surgical. The snoring sound is produced by vibration of the soft tissues of the pharynx, soft palate and also uvula. Snoring occurs in 50% of the adult male population and it can be isolated or sign of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Oral appliances modify the position of the mandibule, the tongue and other structures in oral cavity. Oral appliances are recommended for the treatment of snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. That is why we constructed the study to assess wheather oral appliances

Ocular motor disorders associated with cerebellar lesions: pathophysiology and topical localization.

A number of ocular motor abnormalities can be correlated with damage in specific parts of the cerebellum, especially the vestibulo-cerebellum (flocculus, paraflocculus, nodulus, uvula), and the dorsal vermis and the underlying (posterior) fastigial nuclei. These abnormalities of eye movements reflect both immediate, on-line and long-term adaptive functions of the cerebellum. Various types of image-stabilizing reflexes are in the province of the flocculus (and probably paraflocculus) including pursuit, vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) cancellation, and holding the eye steady for fixation, both imm

Multidimensional factors in submucous cleft palate velopharyngeal function: a large cohort study.

This retrospective study analyzed clinical characteristics and surgical outcome predictors in 676 patients with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) treated between 2008 and 2025. Patients were stratified by palatal morphology to evaluate velopharyngeal function and articulation. Among 183 patients surgically treated for velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), postoperative cure rates were assessed using regression analysis. Preoperatively, 52.96% of the cohort presented with VPI. Palatal morphology significantly correlated with function; the bifid uvula subtype exhibited the highest rate of velopharynge

Oral manifestations in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: a single-center case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the occurrence of oral pathological changes and symptoms in patients affected by gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 200 patients with GERD and 100 matched healthy controls were studied. Thorough visual examination of the dental and oral mucosal tissues was performed and medical history relevant to oral symptoms was collected. The primary outcome was defined as a statistically significant difference, between the study group and controls, in the presence of the following indicators: soft/hard palate and uvula erythema, tooth wear, xerostomia, or

Pattern of simulated snoring is different through mouth and nose.

Cineradiography of the pharynx during simulated snoring was done in 6 healthy volunteers, and supraglottic pressure and flow rate were recorded in 12 others. We observed, immediately before snoring, a decrease in the sagittal diameter of the oropharynx followed, during snoring, by high-frequency oscillations of soft palate and pharyngeal walls. The pattern of soft palate oscillations was different while snoring through the nose or mouth. During inspiratory snoring through the nose, the soft palate remained in close contact with the back of the tongue and only the uvula presented high-frequency

A Rare Case of Quincke's Disease With an Unknown Trigger.

Quincke's disease is a rare presentation of angioneurotic edema of the uvula alone, likely a Type I immediate hypersensitivity reaction. We raise awareness of this rare but life-threatening case presenting as throat tightness, without rash or facial angioedema, treated with corticosteroids, antihistamines, and β2-agonist nebulization.

Altered functional connectivity among frontal eye fields, thalamus and cerebellum in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to evaluate functional connectivity of cerebellothalamo-cortical networks linking frontal eye fields (FEF) and cerebellar regions associated with oculomotor control: nodulus (X), uvula (IX), flocculus (H X) and ventral paraflocculus (H IX) in bipolar disorder (BD) with the use of resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI). METHODS: 19 euthymic BD patients and 14 healthy controls underwent rsfMRI examination. Functional connectivity between bilateral FEF, thalamus and cerebellar regions associated with oculomotor control was evaluated. RES

Familial broad terminal phalanges with one individual showing additional anomalies.

We describe a family with four relatives showing broad terminal phalanges (BTP) of the fingers and toes. One also had mental retardation, an unusual facial appearance, cleft palate with bifid uvula, and gingival hyperplasia. The BTP anomaly in this family seems to be transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait.

[A man whose food gets stuck in the back of his throat].

A 21-year-old man visited the GP complaining of food getting stuck in the back of his throat. We saw a thin string of tissue connecting the uvula to the palatopharyngeal arch and removed it surgically. No such case has previously been described in the absence of a history of trauma, infection or operation.

Macroglossia and ankyloglossia in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Since the recognition of the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome was first noted in 1963, the number of associated anomalies has vastly increased. The rate of appearance of this abnormality is 1 in 13,5000 births. This article presents a case that includes macroglossia and ankyloglossia along with a bifid uvula and a submucous cleft of the palate. A discussion of treatment follows.

Uvulitis and Hemophilus influenzae b bacteremia.

Uvulitis and Hemophilus influenzae b (HIb) bacteremia occurred in two infants. Uvulitis may be associated with HIb bacteremia, with or without epiglottitis. An acutely inflamed uvula in a febrile infant should alert the physician to the possibility of HIb bacteremia and potentially serious sequelae. Hospitalization and parenteral antibiotic therapy are recommended.

The folk illness kimeo and "traditional" uvulectomy: an ethnomedical study of care seeking for children with cough and weakness in Dar es Salaam.

BACKGROUND: Amputation of the uvula by lay providers, so-called "traditional uvulectomy", is common in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. In Tanzania, the procedure is a treatment of persistent cough, and in some areas of the country, one in three children have been cut. Previous research from Sub-Saharan Africa suggest that uvulectomy by lay providers can increase morbidity and mortality in children, but few studies have examined the cultural ideas and practices that are linked to this form of lay surgery. METHODS: This ethnomedical study took place in Dar es Salaam. Ten focus group discussions wi

Anatomical correlates of ocular motor deficits in cerebellar lesions.

Humans are able to stabilize the images of moving targets on the retina by means of smooth pursuit eye movements. After the pontine level, all smooth pursuit pathways pass through the cerebellum. Previous animal studies gave evidence that two specific lesion sites within the cerebellum cause smooth pursuit disorders: those of the flocculus/paraflocculus and the vermis including lobule VI, VII, the uvula and the deep cerebellar nuclei. To date, there have been only a few lesion studies in patients with smooth pursuit disorders that do not allow direct comparison with a control group. In the pre

Muscle spindles in the velopharyngeal musculature of humans.

Seven muscles in the velopharyngeal region of humans were studied histologically to determine the presence of muscle spindles. Typical spindles were found in palatoglossus and tensor veli palatini with a greater number in the latter. Spindles were not found in levator veli palatini, palatopharyngeus, musculus uvulae, salpingopharyngeus, or the superior pharyngeal constrictor.
