Improved vacuum sealing drainage in the treatment of gas gangrene: a case report.

In this case, improved vacuum sealing drainage was used for gas gangrene treatment, which is different from traditional therapies of gas gangrene and this is the first report of using improved vacuum sealing drainage to treat gas gangrene. The patient was a 12-year-old Asian Male who was presented to the Emergency Department with a one-day history of left femoral progressing swelling, paining and fevering. Four days ago, rusty iron bars were plugged into the muscle of the left femoral when he played. Then he was taken to the local clinic and injected with tetanus antitoxin. A diagnosis of gas

Management of hidradenitis suppurativa wounds with an internal vacuum-assisted closure device.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, debilitating disease that is difficult to treat. Once medical management fails, wide local excision offers the best chance for cure. However, the resultant wound often proves too large or contaminated for immediate closure. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective chart review of hidradenitis cases managed surgically between 2005 and 2010. Data collected included patient characteristics, management method, and outcomes. Approximately half of the patients received internal vacuum-assisted closure therapy using the vacuum-assisted closure

Impact of vacuum-assisted closure therapy on outcomes of sternal wound dehiscence†.

OBJECTIVES: Sternal wound dehiscence (SWD) after cardiac surgery is a rare but serious condition associated with considerable costs and morbidity. We sought to evaluate the results of the introduction of vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy in the management of sternal wound dehiscence, compared with those of previous conventional treatments. METHODS: We retrospectively collected 7148 patients who underwent cardiac surgery at our institution between January 2002 and June 2012. A total of 152 (2.1%) patients had a sternal wound dehiscence: 107 were treated with conventional treatments (Group

Comparison of Obstetric Efficacy and Safety of the Kiwi OmniCup with Conventional Vacuum Extraction.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to compare the safety and efficacy of the Kiwi OmniCup system with conventional vacuum delivery. Methods: A retrospective study of operative vaginal deliveries was done for 4682 births. The procedures included 217 operative vaginal deliveries (4.6 %), 79 of which were done using conventional vacuum extraction (37 %) and 138 using the Kiwi system (63 %). Results: Use of the Kiwi system was associated with a significant reduction in episiotomies (61 vs. 76 % in the control group; p < 0.05). The rates of successful completion of birth were comparable for

Vacuum with mesh is a feasible temporary closure device after fascial dehiscence.

INTRODUCTION: The open abdomen is a challenging condition and a temporary abdominal closure device is required in order to protect the intra-abdominal viscera. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a recent device: vacuum-assisted wound closure and mesh-mediated fascial traction (VAWCM) after fascial dehiscence focusing on fascial closure rate, mortality and procedure-related complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on 18 patients treated with VAWCM after fascial dehiscence who were consecutively admitted to the Department of Surgery, Slagelse Hospital, betwee

[Rectovesical fistula as a complication to endoscopic vacuum treatment of a chronic presacral cavity].

A 66-year-old male who underwent Hartmann's operation for rectal cancer developed a pelvic abscess treated with late onset endoscopic vacuum (endo-VAC). He developed a fistula from the abscess to the bladder. The literature does not support prolonged or late onset endo-VAC to treat chronic pelvic abscesses. There is only evidence for early treatment of the presacral abscess. To prevent fistula formation during endo-VAC, care should be taken if the abscess-cavity is close to the bladder or the sponge is in direct contact with other bowel segments. Magnetic resonance imaging with contrast enema

[An approach to vacuum-assisted closure therapy using the S-B Vac].

Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy is increasingly applied for patients with wound dehiscence or mediastinitis caused by surgical site infection (SSI) after open-heart surgery. We have used wall suction for such cases in the past. But this method was an obstacle for improvement of the quality of life (QOL) of the patient. Since the S-B Vac is portable, this equipment may allow wound healing without decreasing QOL. Here, we report a case in which VAC therapy was performed using the S-B Vac.

Use of vacuum-assisted closure for management of a large skin wound in a cat.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-month-old domestic shorthair cat was evaluated after being struck by a car. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The cat had a fractured tibia and avulsion of the tail base. Motor and deep pain sensation were absent from the tail. The fractured tibia was repaired 2 days after the trauma. On the third day, the cat developed tachypnea, dyspnea, high serum urea nitrogen and total bilirubin concentrations, epistaxis, persistent hypotension, and oliguria. The cat recovered with supportive care but developed extensive necrosis of the skin on the dorsum by 9 days after the initial trauma. TREAT

Vacuum sampling techniques for industrial hygienists, with emphasis on beryllium dust sampling.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program Rule, 10 CFR Part 850 became effective in 2000 in response to the prevalence of Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) in workers. The rule requires surface and air monitoring for beryllium to determine exposure levels and the evaluation of the effectiveness of controls used to minimize or eliminate that risk. The most common methods for surface sampling use wet or dry wipes. Wipe sampling techniques may be impractical for many surfaces common to most buildings such as cinder block, textured wall surfaces, fabric and car

Vacuum-assisted closure complicated by erosion and hemorrhage of the anterior tibial artery.

We report an erosion and hemorrhage of a left anterior tibial artery associated with a vacuum-assisted closure device. To our knowledge, this report represents the first arterial erosion associated with a vacuum-assisted closure device. We estimate our patient lost 6 units of blood. The hemorrhage was complicated by anticoagulation and a traumatic setting. Based on our complication, we believe great care should be taken when placing a vacuum-assisted closure device adjacent to an exposed artery.

Vacuum-assisted closure to aid wound healing in foot and ankle surgery.

BACKGROUND: Although vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) is a well-established technique in other surgical specialties, its use has not been established in the foot and ankle. The aims of this study were to determine if vacuum-assisted closure therapy (VAC) helps assist closure in diabetic foot ulcers and wounds secondary to peripheral vascular disease, if it helps debride wounds, and if it prevents the need for further surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 15 patients (18 wounds or ulcers) with primary diagnoses of diabetes (10 patients), chronic osteomyelitis (two patients), peripheral va

Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) in the management of first trimester pregnancy loss.

BACKGROUND: Manual vacuum aspiration is not widely used for the evacuation of retained products of conception in western Europe despite its well-proven success and safety record. Nor is there much information about its use under intravenous (systemic) analgesia or patient-controlled anaesthesia in modern settings. AIM: To evaluate the use of manual vacuum aspiration for the evacuation of retained products of conception under systemic analgesia or patient-controlled anaesthesia in the management of first trimester miscarriages. METHODS: Fifty-eight women with a diagnosis of first trimester mi

Manual vacuum aspiration, a safe and effective alternative in early pregnancy termination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vacuum aspiration has become standard surgical procedure for safe early pregnancy termination. Most of these operations are performed in the operating theater using suction curettage and an electric vacuum pump. MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) is an alternative that is well suited for use as a clinical procedure, which could have advantages both for the patient and the health care system. In order to compare conventional VA and MVA in a Swedish setting, a randomized study was undertaken. METHODS: Two hundred women requesting abortion in early pregnancy, gestational ag
