To gain understanding of the burden of cardiac arrhythmias in patients with acutely decompensated diabetes mellitus (ADDM) on a large scale, we reviewed data on ADDM patients and subtypes of arrhythmias from the National Inpatient Sample from 2010 to 2014. The frequency and prevalence of cardiac arrhythmias were measured, as well as outcomes. Among 874,107 hospitalized ADDM patients identified, 87,970 (10.1%) developed arrhythmias. The ADDM-arrhythmia cohort showed higher all-cause mortality (1.4% vs 0.3%; adjusted odds ratio 2.58, 95% confidence interval 2.39-2.79, P < 0.001), prolonged hospi

The present study investigated the antiarrhythmic activity of alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia (T. cordifolia) in CaCl2 induced arrhythmia. CaCl2 (25 mg/kg) was administered by intravenous infusion (iv) to produce arrhythmia in rats. The animals were then treated with T. cordifolia extract (150, 250, and 450 mg/kg) and verapamil (5 mg/kg,iv). Lead II electrocardiogram was monitored. Plasma calcium, sodium and potassium levels were measured. In CaCl2 induced arrhythmia, heart rate was decreased by 41.10%, T. cordifolia at 150, 300, and 450 mg/kg decreased the heart rate by 26.30%, 29.1

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a rare genetic cardiomyopathy postulated to be a defect in endomyocardial morphogenesis due to the embryonic arrest of the compaction of myocardial fibers. It could be isolated, without other structural heart defects; or associated with congenital heart defects. It is characterized by prominent ventricular myocardial trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. The clinical manifestations, i.e., heart failure, arrhythmias or thromboembolism, overlap with those of other cardiac disorders. It is often misdiagnosed as restrictive or dilated cardiomyop

This report describes a spectrum of M-mode and cross-sectional echocardiographic abnormalities in eight patients with infective endocarditis of the tricuspid valve. The M-mode echocardiogram of the tricuspid valve was abnormal in all but one patient in whom abnormal echoes were seen anterior to the tricuspid valve, in the right ventricular cavity and right ventricular outflow tract. Six patients had shaggy echoes on the tricuspid valve; and one patient showed multilayered echoes on the tricuspid valve which resembled a right atrial myxoma. Irregular diastolic fluttering of the tricuspid valve,

The value of a transcardiac lead system (coronary sinus to right ventricular apex) to record atrial and ventricular electrical activity and its pacing capabilities was assessed in 20 patients with a variety of tachycardias (atrial tachycardia in 3 patients, atrial flutter in 4, intranodal tachycardia in 6, circus movement tachycardia using an accessory pathway in 1 patient, and ventricular tachycardia in 9). The transcardiac lead invariably showed both atrial and ventricular electrical activity during sinus rhythm and tachycardias, allowing application of the same criteria as used when analyzi

BACKGROUND: Interatrial block (IAB) in an ECG, manifesting atrial pathology, is a possible risk factor for atrial arrhythmias and ischemic stroke. IAB is often transiently expressed, posing a major challenge for risk estimation when only a limited number of ECGs are available.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 9674 consecutive patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) between 2007 and 2018. All standard ECGs registered between January 2007 and March 2023 (n=206 668) were digitally stored and analyzed using the General Electric Marquette 12SL algorithm for the presence of a

Amiodarone is an iodine rich agent widely used for the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and flutter. However 14-18% of patients treated with amiodarone develop overt thyroid dysfunction in the form of either amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) or amiodaroneinduced hypothyroidism (AIH). Two different types of AIT have been recognised and designated as Type 1 and Type 2. Distinguishing between the two is often difficult, but necessary for instituting appropriate treatment. We report a case of a 56 year-old male patient who was

Adenosine has been proposed as a useful diagnostic agent in patients with narrow complex regular tachycardia of uncertain origin. Its effects are usually transient owing to its extremely short plasma half life and, as a consequence, it is thought to be safer than other drugs used in the acute treatment of such arrhythmias. However, adenosine had a proarrhythmic effect when administered to a patient in order to confirm the diagnosis of atrial flutter. As expected, a transient increase in atrioventricular block was seen but this was followed by a doubling of the ventricular rate and haemodynamic

Digitalis combines a longstanding tradition with constant up-to-dateness. Kinetic maintenance therapy is very often required for heart patients with arrhythmia as one of their most striking clinical manifestations. The well-known questions of paroxystic tachycardia, flutter and atrial fibrillation are examined, and attention is concentrated on ventricular extrasystole, sinoatrial node disease, and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. It is clear that combinations with recently introduced antiarrhythmic drugs, and administration of diuretics and electrolytes, and the employment of electrical stimula

A recently developed three-dimensional real-time position management system (RPM) uses an ultrasound ranging technique that enables multiple distance measurements between two reference catheters and a mapping catheter each equipped with ultrasound transducers. In addition to three-dimensional representation of the catheters and ablation sites it displays real-time movements of catheters (including the tip and shaft). A recently released version of the system enables additional geometry reconstruction of the heart chamber and activation mapping. This study included 21 patients (mean age 59 +/-

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is the most common form of ventricular preexcitation and affects 1-3 per 1,000 persons worldwide. Many patients remain asymptomatic throughout their lives; however, approximately half of the patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome experience symptoms secondary to tachyarrhythmias, such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and, rarely, ventricular fibrillation and sudden death. Patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome may present with a multitude of symptoms such as unexplained anxiety, palpitations, fatigue, li

BACKGROUND: At present the dual chamber pacing, originally developed for patients with AV blockades, is widely used also for patients with Sick sinus syndrome (tachycardic-bradycardic type). But these patients often cause therapeutical problems to their physicians. In these cases either antiarrhythmic therapy is necessary to prevent recurrent supraventricular tachycardias (which are cause of rapid ventricular pacing) or in the case of failure of AA therapy the pacing mode has to be changed to DDI/R, which excludes physiological VAT pacing. The Auto Mode Switching (AMS) function ensures adequat

A family is reported in which the father and both offspring suffered from sick sinus syndrome (SSS) accompanied by degenerative myopia in the two elder of the three family members. In all three individuals, the basic manifestations of the SSS were total sinus arrest with secondary AV junctional rhythm at a normal rate. Only the 7-year-old boy also exhibited paroxysmal atrial flutter and ventricular asystole lasting up to almost 7 s. Since he had, furthermore, recently sustained a left hemiparesis, a ventricular demand pacemaker was implanted. Chronic atrial fibrillation was eventually establis

AIMS: Long-term mortality after ablation of typical atrial flutter has been found to be increased two-fold in comparison to atrial fibrillation ablations through a period of 5 years with unclear mechanism.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed 189 consecutive patients who underwent ablation for typical atrial flutter (AFL), in which the incidence of AF was the first manifestation of cardiac disease. According to the clinical standards of our centre, the routine recommendation was to evaluate for coronary artery disease (CAD) by invasive angiogram or computed tomography scan. We compared the AFL pa

This article describes a family characterized by combined cardiomyopathy and nonspecific skeletal myopathy who present in the third to fifth decades with cardiac manifestations but earlier have evidence of subtle skeletal muscle dysfunction. They differ from previously defined syndromes and potentially represent a different genetic expression or mutation. Cardiomyopathy presents with atrial arrhythmias including AF and atrial flutter. Life-threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias occur next with onset of ventricular dysfunction. Electrophysiological study revealed sustained monomorphic VT. Aff

AIM: Inappropriate therapy, due to poor discrimination of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) from ventricular tachycardia (VT) remains a major problem in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Theoretically, the addition of atrial sensing in discrimination algorithms should improve this differentiation. The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of a new tachycardia discrimination algorithm, SMART Detection.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-six patients received a non-thoracotomy ICD system (Phylax AV, Biotronik, Germany). All documented spontaneous arrhythmia epis

We report a 50-year-old man with a right ventricular structure causing an intraventricular pressure gradient. He had been diagnosed as vasculo-Behçet with a history of aphthous stomatitis and thrombophlebitis. He had also been suffering from atrial flutter and mild right-side heart failure. Echocardiography showed that there was an abnormal structure attached to the right ventricular free wall and protruding into the cavity, and that it caused the pressure gradient estimated to be approximately 19 mmHg. Chest X-ray computed tomography demonstrated that the structure was partially calcified. Ma

Technical considerations limit the arrhythmias quantifiable by Holter monitoring to atrial and ventricular extrasystoles. However, benign atrial extrasystoles are often neglected and are not considered a target of importance for the study of antiarrhythmic drugs. As regards quantification of ventricular extrasystoles, possible causes of bias should be recognised: the exclusion of patients with dominant irregular and/or wide QRS rhythms, the failure to take global heart rate into account, the qualitative approach to assessment of important parameters such as QRS morphology, coupling interval, g

INTRODUCTION: Fast-intermediate form AV nodal reentry tachycardia (AVNRT) sometimes may mimic atrial tachycardia or atrial flutter and render the diagnosis difficult when the tachycardia rate is fast and AV block occurs during tachycardia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 45-year-old woman with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia was referred to this institution. Initially, the tachycardia was thought to be an atrial tachycardia because of: (1) a short cycle length of the tachycardia with 2:1 and Wenckebach AV block; (2) a difference in the atrial activation sequence during tachycardia and during v

It has been documented by others that spontaneous closure or diminution in size of membranous ventricular septal defect is often associated with aneurysmal formation of the membranous septum. In a series of 51 patients, who underwent cardiac catheterization and cineangiocardiography for evaluation of the severity of a ventricular septal defect, 7 patients showed an aneurysm of the membranous interventricular septum (VSA) associated with a small ventricular septal defect (VSD). M-mode echocardiography was useful in the detection of VSA in 6 of them. Echocardiographic findings were not uniform i
