Dyslexia and the ecological brain.

Evidence is available to show that normal and disturbed reading is a bilateral rather than an unilateral hemispheric affair. The primary subservience of reading seems to shift from right to left during the development of the learning-to-read process. Since the brain is sensitive to enriched stimulation from the environment, hemisphere-tied dyslexia may be alleviated by selective or alluding stimulation of the right (L-dyslexia) or the left (P-dyslexia) cerebral hemisphere. In general, the results of experimental group and single-case investigations show the fruitfulness of these neuropsycholog

Reading instruction for students with moderate mental retardation: review and analysis of research.

Three areas of research on reading instruction for children with moderate mental retardation were reviewed: sight-word instruction, word-analysis instruction, and oral reading error-correction. The research indicates that (a) among the sight-word instruction methods, those that use picture integration, constant delay, and the Edmark errorless discrimination methods seem strongest; (b) word-analysis instruction is a viable option for many students with moderate mental retardation; and (c) word analysis is the most effective method of oral reading-error correction. A diagnostic model and a test to assess word-finding skills in children.

There has been a diagnostic gap in the assessment of word-finding disorders in children. Although research in this area has continued to document strong correlations between word-finding skills and low reading achievement, dyslexia, language disorders, learning disabilities, and stuttering there have been no formal standardised measures for the assessment of word-finding skills in children. The purpose of this paper is to present: (1) a diagnostic model for the assessment of word finding; (2) a literature review that supports this model; (3) a formalised measure, the Test of Word Finding (TWF)

Memory for syntax despite amnesia.

Syntactic persistence is a tendency for speakers to reproduce sentence structures independently of accompanying meanings, words, or sounds. The memory mechanisms behind syntactic persistence are not fully understood. Although some properties of syntactic persistence suggest a role for procedural memory, current evidence suggests that procedural memory (unlike declarative memory) does not maintain the abstract, relational features that are inherent to syntactic structures. In a study evaluating the contribution of procedural memory to syntactic persistence, patients with anterograde amnesia and

Cognitive abilities and psychosocial functioning in bipolar disorder: findings from the BIPLONG study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is associated with impairments in cognition and psychosocial functioning. Although these impairments occur frequently, often persist during euthymic times, and worsen quality of life, the impact of cognitive abilities on functioning has not yet been fully elucidated. METHODS: The current study investigated the effects of cognitive domains (attention/psychomotor speed, verbal learning/memory, executive function) on psychosocial functioning cross-sectionally. Data from 210 euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder [101 female, 109 male; M (age) = 44.47; SD (age) = …

Executive function in fluency and recall measures among children with Tourette syndrome or ADHD.

This study assessed two relevant aspects of executive dysfunction in children with either Tourette syndrome (TS) or ADHD. Process variables derived from existing neuropsychological measures were used to clarify the executive function construct. Clustering of responses on measures of verbal fluency, figural fluency, and verbal learning was examined to assess strategic response organization. Rule breaks, intrusions, and repetition errors were recorded to assess inhibition errors. No significant differences were found among the three groups (TS, ADHD, and controls) on tasks of response organizati…

Low-dose lithium adjunct to atypical antipsychotic treatment nearly improved cognitive impairment, deteriorated the gray-matter volume, and decreased the interleukin-6 level in drug-naive patients with first schizophrenia symptoms: a follow-up pilot study.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of long-term low-dose lithium adjunct to antipsychotic agent use on the cognitive perfor … ation analysis. Relative to baseline, patients in the lithium group showed improved working memory, verbal learning, processing speed, and reasoning/problem solving after 24 weeks of treatment; those in the placebo group showed only improved working memory and verbal learning. The composite MCCB score did not differ significantly between groups. The whole-brain G …

Metaphoric competence in children with learning disabilities.

Metaphoric competence was examined in two groups of children with learning disabilities and one group of nondisabled peers ranging in age from 9-0 to 11-0 years. There were five girls and seven boys in each group. One group of students with learning disabilities had a history of spoken language impairment and the other group did not. Subjects were administered three verbal metaphor tasks (comprehension, preference, and completion) and a visual metaphor task, the Metaphor Triads Task (MTT). The three verbal metaphor tasks were administered in three contexts: (a) sentence, (b) story, and (c) sto

WISC-R stability and re-evaluation of learning-disabled students.

This study investigated the temporal stability of WISC-R IQ scores for learning-disabled subjects (N = 113). All study subjects were administered the WISC-R for an initial evaluation (M age = 8 years, 3 months) and a follow-up re-evaluation (M age = 11 years, 7 months). Pearson product-moment correlations yielded coefficients that were considerably lower than those previously reported: r = .55, p less than .001 for the Verbal IQs; r = .63, p less than .001 for the Performance IQs; and r = .58, p less than .001 for the Full Scale IQs. Results of t-test analyses indicated that only the Verbal IQ

Reliability Underreported in Verbal Memory Tests for Spanish-Speaking Populations: A Systematic Review.

Memory constitutes one of the most frequently assessed domains in neuropsychology. The most used tests to assess verbal memory are the California Verbal Learning Test (TAVEC in Spanish), the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT). The aim of this meta-analysis was to statistically integrate the reliability estimates of these three tests. To this end, we conducted a Systematic Review following the PRISMA checklist. We included empirical studies that reported reliability when using TAVEC (or its children's version), the AVLT or the WMS in Spanish-speaking p…

Lexical-semantic support of verbal short-term memory under phonological demand: evidence for persistent imageability effects in immediate serial recall under rapid presentation and in dyslexic adults.

Verbal short-term memory (vSTM) draws on both phonological and lexical-semantic systems. This study examined whether vSTM support from semantic properties - specifically word imageability - varies with phonological ability and whether it endures rapid encoding conditions. Two auditory immediate serial recall (ISR) experiments tested recall for high - and low-imageability word lists in adults with and without developmental dyslexia. In Experiment 1, word imageability effects in standard presentation ISR were robust and equivalent across groups, despite the context of lower nonword recall in dys

Neighborhood Density and Word Production in Delayed and Advanced Learners.

Purpose This study reexamines the claim that difficulty forming memories of words comprising uncommon sound sequences (i.e., low phonological neighborhood density words) is a determinant of delayed expressive vocabulary development (e.g., Stokes, 2014). Method We modeled communicative development inventory data from (N = 442) 18-month-old children, with expressive lexicon sizes between 0 and 517 words (Mdn = 84). We fitted a Bayesian regression model in which the production of each communicative inventory word (N = 680) by each child was predicted by interactions between that child's expressiv

Preliminary Report on Neuroanatomical Differences Among Reading Disabled, Nonverbally Gifted, and Gifted-Reading Disabled College Students.

Regional comparisons (cortical surface area and thickness) were performed on a well described sample of adults with reading disability alone (RD), nonverbal giftedness alone (G), and reading disability and nonverbal giftedness combined (GRD). These anatomical results are considered in relation to behavioral and functional work previously reported on this sample. GRD-RD regional differences were found in both hemispheres and were more common than GRD-G differences. Regional differences were found in the temporal, parietal, occipital and frontal lobes. While these data are preliminary given the
