Facial divergence and mandibular crowding in treated subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the relationships between facial divergence, vertical growth, and postretention mandibular crowding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five white extraction patients were evaluated immediately posttreatment (15.4 years) and again 16.6 years later. Hyperdivergent subjects, subjects with open bite or severe deep bites were not evaluated. Changes in incisor irregularity and tooth-size arch-length discrepancies (TSALD) were evaluated and correlated with measures of divergence and skeletal growth. RESULTS: Incisor irregularity increased 0.9 mm and TSALD increased 0.7 mm afte

Changes in the craniofacial complex from adolescence to midadulthood: a cephalometric study.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate cephalometrically the craniofacial growth changes and adjustments that occur from late adolescence to midadulthood in persons who had no previous history of orthodontic treatment. Serial lateral cephalograms from 58 subjects from the University of Michigan Elementary and Secondary Growth Study recalled on average in their late 40s were examined. Fifteen of the patients also had cephalograms taken in early adulthood (early 30s). Statistically significant growth changes occurred; mandibular and midfacial lengths as well as posterior and lower ante

Stomatognathic function in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and in developmental open-bite subjects.

Patients affected with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis present clear radiological alterations of the condyles of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) due to the inflammatory process, with a prevalence ranging from 17 percent to 63 percent. This work is a comparison between a group of subjects with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis presenting signs and symptoms of TMT dysfunction and a group of the same age not suffering from any rheumatic morbidity, but presenting an open bite > 3 mm. The aim is to verify whether the open bite can induce an alteration in mandibular function comparable to that observed

Anatomic guidelines for the placement of external references for maxillary repositioning.

OBJECTIVE: External reference points, particularly Kirschner pins (K-wire), placed in the region of the nasion have been shown to improve the accuracy of maxillary vertical repositioning. Although no complications associated with this technique have been reported, there is a potential for injury to the anterior cranial fossa or frontal sinus. The purpose of this study was to measure the shortest distance from the nasion to the anterior cranial fossa and from the nasion to the frontal sinus. These measurements were used to establish anatomic guidelines governing safe placement of external refer

Changes concurrent with orthodontic treatment when maxillary expansion is a primary goal.

A retrospective study of dental and maxillary skeletal changes occurring during a period of orthodontic treatment was made from pretreatment and posttreatment dental casts. Sixty maxillary expansion cases were examined. Thirty cases had maxillary expansion accomplished with a fixed rapid palatal expander and 30 were expanded with a quadhelix appliance. All cases were finished with full fixed edgewise appliances. Multiple linear regression analyses were completed for both groups with upper molar width change as the criterion and age, tipping of the upper molars, palatal width change and maxilla

The mechanics of lower incisor intrusion: experiments in nongrowing baboons.

The effects of different combinations of segmented intrusion arch wires and anchorage units on the relative vertical positions of anterior and posterior teeth in the lower arch were demonstrated in four nongrowing baboons. Forces of between 90 and 100 g were delivered by the intrusion arch wires to the four lower incisor teeth in each animal over a period of 5 months. The dental and skeletal changes occurring during that period were assessed from lateral cephalometric radiographs. Lower incisor intrusion, determined by the vertical movement of an internal reference point, was demonstrated in e

Treatment of protracted bilateral mandibular dislocation with Proplast-Vitallium prostheses.

A case of bilateral protracted mandibular dislocation complicated by the presence of unusual degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joints is presented. A synopsis of treatment modalities that have been used previously to treat similar conditions is given. Our treatment consisted of bilateral condylectomies, eminectomies, and insertion of Proplast-coated Vitallium condylar prostheses. These procedures resulted in the re-establishment of normal TMJ anatomy, the maintenance of proper posterior mandibular vertical dimension, correction of malocclusion, and relief of the patient's symptoms.

Skeletal alterations associated with the use of bonded rapid maxillary expansion appliance.

Bonded maxillary expansion appliances have been suggested to control increases in the vertical dimension of the face after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). However, there is still no consensus in the literature about its real skeletal effects. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate, longitudinally, the vertical and sagittal cephalometric alterations after RME performed with bonded maxillary expansion appliance. The sample consisted of 26 children, with a mean age of 8.7 years (range: 6.9-10.9 years), with posterior skeletal crossbite and indication for RME. After maxillary expan…

Upper airway dimensions and the skeletal parameters in orthodontic patients who developed moderate-severe COVID-19 symptoms during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Large airway dimensions are associated with a rapid decline in the lung function and a higher risk of hospitalization. Therefore, the airway dimensions of healthy subjects who tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be associated with the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to measure the upper airway dimensions and the craniofacial skeletal parameters in patients who tested positive for COVID-19, to compare the upper airway dimensions and the craniofacial skeletal parameters between patients who developed no/mild sympto

Reactivation of ocular toxoplasmosis during pregnancy.

We wished to assess whether ocular toxoplasmosis can be reactivated during pregnancy in immunocompetent females, and whether such reactivation is confined to the eye or whether the fetus is exposed to the risk of vertical transmission. For this purpose, we retrospectively examined 18 females with ocular toxoplasmosis during the course of 35 pregnancies. Of these 18 patients, seven developed recurrences during seven pregnancies. Due to the potential risk of functional damage to the mother and the possibility of vertical disease transmission to the fetus, we suggest following such cases carefull
