Local Bond-Stretch Coordinates for Anharmonic Vibrational Computations.

The local bond-stretch (LBS) method is presented as a means of obtaining a set of localized, rectilinear vibrational modes. Three variants of the LBS method are considered: pure LBS, projected LBS (pLBS), and orthogonal, projected LBS (opLBS). These variants feature different degrees of localization and different coupling terms in the kinetic energy operator, such that the most localized method (LBS) has the largest number and magnitude of coupling terms, and the least localized (opLBS) has the least coupling terms. The different LBS variants are exemplified in computations on overtone vibrati…

Mechanism for Vibrational Difficulty of Unilaterally Scarred Vocal Folds.

Vocal folds can be scarred by trauma, inflammation, or thermal burns after treatments such as surgery or radiation therapy. When vocal folds are scarred, it is known that their vibration amplitude decreases and their phonation threshold pressure (PTP) increases, but the mechanism for the vibrational difficulty of scarred vocal folds is unclear. Previously, by using modal analysis and one-dimensional fluid analysis, we proposed a symmetric vibration model for normal vocal folds. Here, we propose an asymmetric vocal fold model for analyzing the vibration of vocal folds when one side is scarred a…

Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy of centrosymmetric molecule at interfaces.

The centrosymmetric benzene molecule has zero first-order electric dipole hyperpolarizability, which results in no sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) signal at interfaces, but it shows very strong SFVS experimentally. We perform a theoretical study on its SFVS, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Its strong SFVS mainly comes from the interfacial electric quadrupole hyperpolarizability rather than the symmetry-breaking electric dipole, bulk electric quadrupole, and interfacial and bulk magnetic dipole hyperpolarizabilities, which provides a novel and completely …

Aromaticity Reversal Induced by Vibrations in Cyclo[16]carbon.

Aromaticity is typically regarded as an intrinsic property of a molecule, correlated with electron delocalization, stability, and other properties. Small variations in the molecular geometry usually result in small changes in aromaticity, in line with Hammond's postulate. For example, introducing bond-length alternation in benzene and square cyclobutadiene by modulating the geometry along the Kekulé vibration gradually decreases the magnitude of their ring currents, making them less aromatic and less antiaromatic, respectively. A sign change in the ring current, corresponding to a reversal of …

Nonuniform-to-uniform structural transitions induced by ultrasonic vibrations.

Recent millimetre-scale studies proposed that ultrasonic vibrations (UVs) promote material flow in welding joints via acting on dislocations. Here, we report atomic-scale results from molecular dynamics simulations of Mg-Al nanolayers joined by two means: only heat and heat accompanied by UVs (vibration amplitude, B = 0.1-10 nm and vibration frequency, f = 5.7-100 GHz) over the temperature range of 600-800 K. Comparative and quantitative analyses were performed on the structural evolution (including atomic diffusion, arrangements and distributions) of the joining Mg/Al interfaces and motions o…

Experimental study on biological damage in bone in vibrational drilling.

BACKGROUND: Drilling is a well-known mechanical operation performed for fixing fracture at required locations in bone. The process may produce mechanical and thermal alterations in the structure of the bone and surrounding tissues leading to irreversible damage known as osteonecrosis. OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of this study was to measure the level of biological damage in bone when a drill assisted by low and high levels of vibrations is penetrated into bone tissue. METHODS: Histopathology examination of sections of bones has been performed after drilling the bone using a range of vibratio…

In-vitro experimental study of histopathology of bone in vibrational drilling.

Drilling is a common surgical procedure for fracture treatment and reconstruction in multiple surgical fields, including orthopaedics, neurology, and dentistry. Drilling delicate tissue (such as bone) with a hard metallic tool is considered notorious for inducing mechanical and thermal damage, which can adversely affect osseointegration and may weaken the bond between the bone and implant, or other fixative devices anchoring the bone. The aim of this study is to explore the benefits of vibrational drilling (VD) in overcoming the complications associated with conventional drilling (CD). Drillin…

A computational study of depth of vibration into vocal fold tissues.

The effective depth of vocal fold vibration is self-regulated and generally not known a priori in vocalization. In this study, the effective depth was quantified systematically under various phonatory conditions using a fiber-gel finite element vocal fold model. The horizontal and vertical excursions of each finite element nodal point trajectory were recorded to compute trajectory areas. The extent of vibration was then studied based on the variation of trajectory radii as a function of depth in several coronal sections along the anterior-posterior direction. The results suggested that the voc…

Genital vibration for sexual function and enhancement: a review of evidence.

Vibration, as provided by a genital vibrator, is commonly regarded as a tool to enhance sexual pleasure and in modern day society falls under the category of a sex toy. However, the vibrator was not originally intended to be a toy, and its benefits reach far beyond that of a plaything. This article is a narrative review of the current evidence regarding the use of vibratory stimulation for the treatment of sexual dysfunction and/or sexual and relationship enhancement. The literature indicates that vibratory stimulation has evidence-based support for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, ejacu…

Rates of Molecular Vibrational Energy Transfer in Organic Solutions.

For condensed-phase reactions, commonly used kinetic models assume that energy exchange from and to solvent molecules is much faster than any reactive steps. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that this does not always hold true. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to explore the time scale for energy transfer between solvent and solute in some typical organic solvents. As a reference, energy transfer between solvent molecules is also considered. The time scale is found to depend most strongly on the identity of the solvent. Energy transfer occurs fastest, with a time

Evaluation of the Perceptual Characteristics of a Force Induced by Asymmetric Vibrations.

This paper describes the perceptual characteristics of a sense of a force induced by asymmetric vibration using a vibration speaker-type non-grounded haptic interface. We confirm that the vibration speaker generates a perceived force that pulls or pushes a user's hand in a particular direction when an asymmetric amplitude signal that is generated by inverting a part of a sine wave is input. In this paper, to verify the system with respect to various factors of force perception caused by asymmetric vibration, we conducted six experiments and the following results were obtained. (1) The force ve…

Role of Kv4.3 in Vibration-Induced Muscle Pain in the Rat.

UNLABELLED: We hypothesized that changes in the expression of voltage-gated potassium channel (Kv) 4.3 contribute to the mechanical hyperalgesia induced by vibration injury, in a rodent model for hand-arm vibration syndrome in humans. Here we show that the exposure of the gastrocnemius muscle to vibration injury induces muscle hyperalgesia that is accompanied by a significant downregulation of Kv4.3 in affected sensory nerve fibers in dorsal root ganglia. We additionally show that the intrathecal administration of antisense oligonucleotides for Kv4.3 messenger RNA itself induces muscle hyperal…

Comparing vibrational spectra of free bumetanide and its solutions.

Bumetanide, which is known as a potent diuretic, is currently under investigation for its potential anti-epileptic effects in neonatal seizures. The purpose of this study was to examine the molecular structure of bumetanide both in the free form and its solutions via vibrational spectra (FT-IR, FT-Raman spectroscopies) and quantum chemical calculations. FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of the title compound were recorded for the solid phase and the solutions of DMSO and ethanol. Optimized molecular geometry and vibrational wavenumbers of bumetanide were calculated by DFT/B3LYP functional with 6-31G(…
