TAPEWORMS (CESTODA: OPHIOTAENIA) FROM THE NORTHERN COTTONMOUTH (AGKISTRODON PISCIVORUS).

The northern cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus (Lacépède, 1789) (Viperidae: Crotalinae), occurs in the southeastern United States and is one of the few semiaquatic vipers in the world. Three proteocephalid tapeworms of the genus OphiotaeniaLa Rue, 1911 (Cestoda), have been described from this venomous snake. A critical evaluation of type specimens and tapeworms recently collected from A. piscivorus has revealed that only 2 species, Ophiotaenia marenzelleri (Barrois, 1898) and Ophiotaenia grandisLa Rue, 1911 (new synonym Ophiotaenia agkistrodontis [Harwood, 1933]), are specific parasites of t…

Structural and functional studies with mytoxin II from Bothrops moojeni reveal remarkable similarities and differences compared to other catalytically inactive phospholipases A₂-like.

Lys49-phospholipases A₂ (Lys49-PLA₂s) are proteins found in bothropic snake venoms (Viperidae family) and belong to a class of proteins which presents a phospholipase A2 scaffold but are catalytically inactive. These proteins (also known as PLA₂s-like toxins) exert a pronounced local myotoxic effect and are not neutralized by antivenom, being their study relevant in terms of medical and scientific interest. Despite of the several studies reported in the literature for this class of proteins only a partial consensus has been achieved concerning their functional-structural relationships. In this…

Antimicrobial peptidomes of Bothrops atrox and Bothrops jararacussu snake venoms.

The worrisome emergence of pathogens resistant to conventional drugs has stimulated the search for new classes of antimicrobial and antipara … BPPs), and a snake venom metalloproteinase tripeptide inhibitor (SVMPi). Although commonly found in Viperidae venoms, except for Bax-12, the BPPs and SVMPi here reported had not been described in B. atrox and B. jararacussu venoms. Among the novel peptides, some exhibited bactericidal activity towards P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, had low hemolytic effect, a …

The action of marimastat, a metalloprotease inhibitor, on the coagulant, hemorrhagic, and neuromuscular activities of Lachesis muta (South American bushmaster) venom.

Snake venom metalloproteases (SVMP) play a major role in various pathophysiological effects of snakebite envenomation, and marimastat (MMT), a selective metalloprotease inhibitor, has been investigated as a potential ancillary treatment for attenuating SVMP-mediated effects. In this work, the effect of MMT on the coagulant, hemorrhagic and neuromuscular activities of Lachesis muta (South American bushmaster) venom was assessed experimentally in vitro and in vivo and compared with therapeutic anti-Bothrops/Lachesis antivenom (AV) produced by the Instituto Butantan. First Clinical Report on Efficacy of Alternative European Viper Antivenoms in Treatment of Vipera ammodytes Envenomation in Croatia.

In Croatia, the European Viper Venom Antiserum®, produced by the Institute of Immunology Zagreb, was the only antiserum used to treat Vipera ammodytes envenomation. When production of the Zagreb antivenom ceased, three other antivenoms, Viperfav®, BulBio®, and Viekvin®, replaced it in clinical practice at the Department of Infectious Diseases, University Hospital Split. This study includes 34 patients envenomed by Vipera ammodytes during the period between 2020 and 2025: 24 (71%) suffered grade 2a envenomation, nine (26%) grade 2b, and one grade 3 (severe envenomation). Evaluation of the pharmacological potential of Ganoderma lucidum against haemorrhagic and anticoagulant activities of Echis ocellatus venom.

BACKGROUND: Echis ocellatus is a highly venomous snake that can cause serious medical complications due to the presence of toxic proteins in its venom. These proteins, such as echicetin and phospholipase A2 (PLA2), often cause severe pathophysiology in snakebite victims. Ganoderma lucidum is recognised for its pharmacological benefits against various diseases. However, the potential of this fungus as an antivenom has not yet been reported. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the inhibitory effects of G. lucidum on haemorrhagic and anticoagulant activities induced by E. ocellatus venom, and ide

Design and Binding Affinity of Antisense Peptides for Snake Venom Neutralization.

Snakebites are a significant public health problem in many tropical and subtropical regions, causing extensive morbidity and mortality. Traditional snake antivenoms face multiple challenges, including allergenicity, high production costs, and logistical difficulties, highlighting the urgent need for new therapeutic approaches. This pilot study explores the potential of oligopeptides as therapeutic inhibitors targeting the neurotoxic sites of ammodytoxin A (AtxA; PDB: 3G8G) from Vipera ammodytes. We selected two sense oligopeptides to represent critical neurotoxic regions of AtxA as targets for

Snake Venom Makeover: Age-Dependent Variations in Procoagulant Biochemistry of Egyptian Saw-Scaled Viper (Echis pyramidum pyramidum) Venom.

Echis species (saw-scaled vipers) are WHO Category 1 medically significant venomous snakes with potent procoagulant venoms, which cause lethal venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy in human victims. Despite clinical presentations of bites varying significantly between individuals within the same species, the contribution of age-related changes in the venom biochemistry has not been investigated. This study investigated the ontogenetic changes in Echis pyramidum pyramidum venom and its impact on therapeutic efficacy. The efficacy of various antivenoms (Echitab, Echitab+ ICP, Inosan MENA, Inosa

Diagnostic characteristics of the 20-minute whole blood clotting test in detecting venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy following carpet viper envenoming.

INTRODUCTION: Envenoming by Echis spp. (carpet or saw-scaled vipers) causes haemorrhage and coagulopathy and represents a significant proportion of snakebites in the savannah regions of West Africa. Early diagnosis of envenoming is crucial in the management of these patients and there is limited evidence on the utility of the 20-minute whole blood clotting test (20WBCT) in diagnosing venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy (VICC) following envenoming by Echis ocellatus. METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted at the Kaltungo General Hospital in North-eastern Nigeria fro

Production and evaluation of monovalent anti-snake immunoglobulins from chicken egg yolk using Ghanaian puff adder (Bitis arietans) Venom: Isolation, purification, and neutralization efficacy.

Snakebites are rampant in Ghana, especially among the farmers, herdsmen, military recruits, hunters, and rural dwellers, and the antisnake venoms (ASV) use to treat these bites are not locally produced but rather imported, which come with a high cost, lack of constant supply and low specificity. The study was therefore aimed at isolating, purifying, and evaluating the efficacy of monovalent ASV from chicken egg yolk using puff adder (Bitis arietans) venom from Ghana. The major pathophysiological properties of the venom and the efficacy of the locally produced ASV were evaluated. The results sh

Interpopulational variation and ontogenetic shift in the venom composition of Lataste's viper (Vipera latastei, Boscá 1878) from northern Portugal.

Lataste's viper (Vipera latastei) is a venomous European viper endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, recognised as medically important by the World Health Organization. To date, no comprehensive characterisation of this species' venom has been reported. Here, we analysed the venoms of juvenile and adult specimens of V. latastei from two environmentally different populations from northern Portugal. Using bottom-up venomics, we produced six venom proteomes (three per population) from vipers belonging to both age classes (i.e., two juveniles and four adults), and RP-HPLC profiles of 54 venoms collect

Snake Bite-Induced Acute Kidney Injury: Report of a Successful Outcome During Pregnancy.

AbstractSnake bite is an important health hazard in tropics. Snake envenomation in pregnancy may cause fetal death and maternal mortality or morbidity. However, little is known about the toxic effects and optimal management during pregnancy after snake envenomation because of the rarity of cases. Herein, we report a case of a pregnant woman who was successfully treated for snake bite-induced acute kidney injury during the third trimester. She was treated with equine-derived polyvalent anti-snake venom without development of any adverse effects, hemodialysis, and supportive therapy. She fully r

The L-amino acid oxidase from Calloselasma rhodostoma snake venom modulates apoptomiRs expression in Bcr-Abl-positive cell lines.

Anti-apoptotic genes and apoptomiRs deregulated expression contribute to apoptosis resistance in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) Bcr-Abl(+) cells. Here, the L-amino acid oxidase from Calloselasma rhodostoma (CR-LAAO) venom altered the apoptotic machinery regulation by modulating the expression of the miR-145, miR-26a, miR-142-3p, miR-21, miR-130a, and miR-146a, and of the apoptosis-related proteins Bid, Bim, Bcl-2, Ciap-2, c-Flip, and Mcl-1 in Bcr-Abl(+) cells. CR-LAAO is a potential tool to instigate apoptomiRs regulation that contributes to drive CML therapy.

Agkihpin, a novel SVTLE from Gloydius halys Pallas, promotes platelet aggregation in vitro and inhibits thrombus formation in vivo in murine models of thrombosis.

In previous work, a snake venom arginine esterase (SVAE), agkihpin from the venom of Gloydius halys Pallas, was isolated and its biochemical data including Mr, PI, amino acid components and sugar content was collected. Here, the agkihpin was cloned and further characterized and we found that agkihpin could promote ADP-induced platelets aggregation, hydrolyze fibrin, cleave Aα and Bβ chains of fibrinogen and reduce the thrombosis induced by thrombin. Moreover, agkihpin hydrolyzed TAME with optimum temperatures at 30 °C-45 °C, and the hydrolysis was inhibited by EDTA, PMSF, DTT and promoted by C

Transient distal renal tubular acidosis following hump nosed viper bite: Two cases from Sri Lanka.

Hump-nosed viper (Hypnale hypnale; HNV) is one of the six major snake species in Sri Lanka that cause envenomation. Nephrotoxicity, coagulopathy, and neurotoxicity are wellrecognized features of its envenomation. Type 4 renal tubular acidosis (RTA4) has only once been described previously in this condition, and we report two further cases. Two patients aged 53 and 51 presented following HNV bites with acute kidney injury and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Both underwent multiple cycles of hemodialysis until the polyuric phase was reached. Despite polyuria, both patients developed resistant

Proteomic analysis of venom variability and ontogeny across the arboreal palm-pitvipers (genus Bothriechis).

UNLABELLED: Bothriechis is a genus of eleven currently recognized slender and arboreal venomous snakes, commonly called palm-pitvipers that range from southern Mexico to northern South America. Despite dietary studies suggesting that palm-pitvipers are generalists with an ontogenetic shift toward endothermic prey, venom proteomic analyses have revealed remarkable divergence between the venoms of the Costa Rican species, B. lateralis, B. schlegelii, B. supraciliaris, and B. nigroviridis. To achieve a more complete picture of the venomic landscape across Bothriechis, the venom proteomes of biodi
