The Inaugural Australian Centre for Hepatitis Virology Public Panel Discussion on Viral Hepatitis Research-Lessons in Scientific Community Outreach.

Viral hepatitis remains one of the most significant health issues globally, directly responsible for over 1 million deaths each year and affecting almost 300 million people around the world. Scientific research in recent decades has brought about improvements in the lives of people living with chronic viral hepatitis. On the 29 July 2021, the Australian Centre for Hepatitis Virology (ACHV) for the first time held a public educational forum for the general public. The main aim of this event was to inform the affected community about the importance of scientific research and give an overview of …

The Epidemiology, Virology and Clinical Findings of Dengue Virus Infections in a Cohort of Indonesian Adults in Western Java.

BACKGROUND: Dengue has emerged as one of the most important infectious diseases in the last five decades. Evidence indicates the expansion of dengue virus endemic areas and consequently the exponential increase of dengue virus infections across the subtropics. The clinical manifestations of dengue virus infection include sudden fever, rash, headache, myalgia and in more serious cases, spontaneous bleeding. These manifestations occur in children as well as in adults. Defining the epidemiology of dengue in a given area is critical to understanding the disease and devising effective public health

Epidemiology and virology of acute respiratory infections during the first year of life: a birth cohort study in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Understanding viral etiology and age-specific incidence of acute respiratory infections in infants can help identify risk groups and inform vaccine delivery, but community-based data is lacking from tropical settings. METHODS: One thousand four hundred and seventy-eight infants in urban Ho Chi Minh City and 981 infants in a semi-rural district in southern Vietnam were enrolled at birth and followed to 1 year of age. Acute respiratory infection (ARI) episodes were identified through clinic-based illness surveillance, hospital admissions and self-reports. Nasopharyngeal swabs were c

The virology of variola minor. Correlation of laboratory tests with the geographic distribution and human virulence of variola isolates.

Several groups of variola isolates were compared in DNA structure, and by four independent biologic markers. Isolates of variola minor from Europe and South America (alastrim virus) could be distinguished from African isolates of variola minor by DNA structure and by two of the four biologic markers. Taken as a group, the properties of African isolates, in general, differed from those of variola major, but this difference was confined to properties which depended (in the laboratory) on the recent history of the virus concerned. The suggestion made previously that there was an "intermediate" or

Rates of switching to second-line antiretroviral therapy and impact of delayed switching on immunologic, virologic, and mortality outcomes among HIV-infected adults with virologic failure in Rakai, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Switch from first to second-line ART is recommended by WHO for patients with virologic failure. Delays in switching may contribute to accumulated drug resistance, advanced immunosuppression, increased morbidity and mortality. The 3rd 90' of UNAIDS 90:90:90 targets 90% viral suppression for persons on ART. We evaluated the rate of switching to second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART), and the impact of delayed switching on immunologic, virologic, and mortality outcomes in the Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) Clinical Cohort Study which started providing ART in 2004 and implement

Insights into parvovirus B19 clinical and virological dynamics among blood donors.

Coinciding with the exceptional European resurgence of human parvovirus B19 (B19V), between 2023 and 2024, twelve B19V DNA-positive blood donations out of 27.737 were detected by the plasma fractionating industry via nucleic acid testing (NAT) and notified to the blood collection centers of Trieste and Gorizia (Italy). In order to prevent potential B19V transmission, the implicated donors were recalled for clinical and virological follow-up for one year. None of the subjects had reported symptoms at the time of donation, though six subjects subsequently recalled either mild, transient symptoms

Virological biomarkers of HIV remission in children: implications for pediatric cure strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sustained antiretroviral therapy (ART)-free HIV remission has been observed in a few early-treated children, highlighting the potential for pediatric HIV cure strategies. However, the risks associated with analytical treatment interruption (ATI) underscore the need for reliable virological biomarkers that can identify participants for ATI studies, predict viral rebound or remission and guide clinical decision-making. This review summarizes evidence on virological biomarkers of HIV remission with relevance to pediatric populations. RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in reservoir meas

HIV vertical transmission linked to virological failure in pregnant women on ART.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, where vertical transmission (VT) of HIV remains high, this study investigates the impact of maternal virological failure (VF) on VT outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 541 HIV-positive pregnant women from three high-prevalence hospitals was analyzed using bivariable and multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Multivariable logistic regression revealed that maternal VF was strongly associated with VT of HIV. Mothers with VF were nearly ten times more likely to transmit HIV to their infants compared to those with viral suppression (AOR = 9.96; 95% CI 3.19-

Sustained Virological Response After Early Discontinuation of Hepatitis C Treatment.

To date, the effectiveness of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) discontinued before 4 weeks has not been analysed in routine clinical practice. The study aimed to determine whether such a short therapy will enable achieving a sustained virological response under real-world experience. The study population of 97 patients who discontinued DAA therapy and had data enabling analysis of patient and disease characteristics, and assessment of treatment effectiveness was selected from 16,815 patients registered in the EpiTer-2 database. The most common reason for discontinuation was hepatic decompensati

Current ARTs, Virologic Failure, and Implications for AIDS Management: A Systematic Review.

Antiretroviral therapies (ARTs) have revolutionized the management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, significantly improved patient outcomes, and reduced the mortality rate and incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, despite the remarkable efficacy of ART, virologic failure remains a challenge in the long-term management of HIV-infected individuals. Virologic failure refers to the persistent detectable viral load in patients receiving ART, indicating an incomplete suppression of HIV replication. It can occur due to various factors, including poor medicat

Achieving the Sustained Virologic Response With a Short-Course Treatment of Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir.

Hepatitis C, a single-stranded RNA virus officially discovered in 1989, is one of the most known viruses of the Flaviviridae family. Direct-acting antiviral drugs helped revolutionize the management of hepatitis C infection by guaranteeing higher cure rates. The medical field has strived to optimize the management of this disease, with recent reports proposing a shorter treatment duration to achieve the sustained virologic response (SVR). We present a case of a patient diagnosed with hepatitis C decompensated liver cirrhosis who achieved the SVR after only two weeks of treatment with sofosbuvi

Dysregulation of iron metabolism modulators in virologically suppressed HIV-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: Iron metabolism plays an essential role in cellular functions. Since virologically suppressed chronic HIV-infected subjects under effective antiretroviral treatment (ART) exhibit a persistent immune dysfunction that leads to comorbidities, iron homeostasis may be relevant in this context. We aimed to explore iron metabolism in virologically suppressed chronic HIV infected subjects under a successful ART. METHODS: In this retrospective study, traditional iron metabolism biomarkers (total iron, ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin saturation index), as well as soluble transferrin
