[Comparative research at the "mesoptometer" and "nyktomat" (author's transl)].

This paper deals with the results of comparative reserach into twilight vision as found by tests at the "Mesoptometer" and "Nyktomat". The research population consisted of 168 persons. Their reactions at the test instruments during various functional tests are demonstrated by means of diagrams. While there is good correspondence between the two test instruments in the range of contrast essential for attesting night driving ability, differences can be shown to exist in the critical range of marginal values.

"Eye" Don't See: An Analysis of Visual Symptom Reporting by Stroke Survivors from a Large Epidemiology Study.

AIM: The purpose was to explore the reported symptoms of post-stroke visual impairment from a large multi-centre prospective epidemiology study. METHODS: Visual assessment, including a case history, visual acuity, ocular alignment, ocular motility, visual fields, visual inattention and visual perception, was attempted for all stroke admissions to three acute stroke units. RESULTS: Of 1500 stroke admissions, 1204 received a visual assessment, of which 867 had one or more visual impairments. Of those identified with visual impairment 44.4% reported visual symptoms. The most common visual sympt

Vertical strabismus in monofixation syndrome.

PURPOSE: The manifest angle of the horizontal deviation in monofixation syndrome (MFS) has been reported to reach a maximum of 8 to 10 PD. Review of the literature, however, revealed no studies about the vertical deviation associated with MFS. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the range of the angle of the vertical deviation in MFS. METHODS: Forty patients who had MFS with vertical strabismus in the distance primary position were included in this study. All fulfilled the criteria for monofixation, fusing Worth 4 dots at near but suppressing at distance and/or having stereoacuity betwee

Optic Nerve Edema and Retrobulbar Optic Neuritis Cases Associated with Jamestown Canyon Virus in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Three adult patients with unilateral optic neuropathy, seropositive for Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) IgM and acute infection, experienced acute unilateral vision loss. Two cases had swollen optic nerves with vision loss in a pattern suggestive of papillitis, whereas the third had retrobulbar optic neuritis. All presented with vision loss rather than typical meningoencephalitis symptoms (e.g., nuchal rigidity, photophobia, and headache). Case 1 had 20/20 vision (right/left), relative afferent pupillary defect (left), and marked optic disc edema. Perimetry revealed an increased blind spot. Final

Stereopsis and ocular alignment in Parkinson's disease patients with and without freezing of gait symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease patients are classically described by having motor disorder symptoms. Freezing of gait is one of these motor symptoms that presents in some of these patients. Even though freezing of gait is classically considered as motor dysfunction, it is now widely accepted that deficits in other sensory systems, for example visual system, may lead or contribute to freezing of gait. The purpose of this study is to characterise some of the binocular vision functions in freezing of gait patients, non-freezing of gait Parkinson's disease patients and age-matched healthy control

Measuring resolution in the contrast domain: the small letter contrast test.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that small letter contrast sensitivity (CS) is more sensitive than visual acuity (VA) to defocus, luminance, binocular enhancement, and visual differences among pilot trainees. It would be valuable to make this test available for general use. We developed a hard copy (letter chart) version called the Small Letter Contrast Test (SLCT) and evaluated its sensitivity and reliability in comparison to standard vision tests. METHODS: The SLCT has 14 lines of letters with 10 letters per line. The letters are of constant size (20/25 or 4/5 at 4 m), but vary in cont…

Evaluation of color vision related quality of life changes due to cataract surgery.

Questionnaires have been used as research tools to provide a standardized approach to assess quality of life at various time periods and populations. However, literature shows only a few articles about self-reported color vision changes. Our aim was to evaluate the subjective patient feelings before and after cataract surgery and compare the results with a color vision test result. Our method was as follows: 80 cataract patients filled out a modified color vision questionnaire and performed the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Color Vision Test (FM100) before, two weeks, and six months after catarac

Colour vision defects in occupational chronic solvent encephalopathy.

Occupational chronic solvent encephalopathy (CSE) is associated with a number of neurobehavioural disorders including defects of visual perception. The purpose of this study was to characterize colour vision defects in CSE patients. Colour vision was tested in bright illumination with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test in workers who had CSE due to occupational exposure to common industrial solvents. Before assessing colour vision, the subjects' ocular health and visual functions were evaluated. On the basis of this evaluation, 36 subjects with healthy eyes were selected and their colour visi

Prevalence of color vision deficiency among Saudi dentists and its effect on shade selection: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate shade selection is essential for aesthetic dental restorations and relies on the clinician's color perception. Color vision deficiency (CVD) may impair this ability, yet data on its prevalence and clinical impact among dentists in Saudi Arabia are limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CVD and its association with shade-matching accuracy. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study included 150 dental students, interns, general dentists, and specialists. Color vision was assessed using the Ishihara test and categorized as normal, borderline, or red-green CVD

Impact of simulated hyperopia on academic-related performance in children.

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of simulated hyperopia and sustained near work on children's ability to perform a range of academic-related tasks. METHODS: Fifteen visually normal children (mean [±SD] age, 10.9 [±0.8] years; 10 male and 5 female) were recruited. Performance on a range of standardized academic-related outcome measures was assessed with and without 2.50 diopters of simulated bilateral hyperopia (administered in a randomized order), before and after 20 minutes of sustained near work, at two separate testing sessions. Academic-related measures included a standardized reading t

Subjective detection of visual field defects using home TV set.

The usefulness of the noise-field spontaneously generated on a home television screen for subjective perception of visual field defects was studied in 196 eyes of ocular hypertensive or normal subjects, 166 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma and 124 eyes with low-tension glaucoma. All subjects had never perceived their field defects. In 290 glaucoma eyes, including 71 eyes of early glaucoma, 265 eyes (91.4%) could perceive abnormality of the noise-field which corresponded to visual field defects confirmed by static perimetry. In 6 normal eyes abnormality of the noise-field was perceived at

Effect of maternal rubella on hearing and vision: a twenty year post-epidemic study.

Three years of research conducted at NTID beginning in 1984 examined the hearing and vision characteristics of two groups of deaf college students. All 242 students studied received complete audiometric assessments and ophthalmological examinations. Of those students examined, 104 were known to be deaf as a result of maternal rubella (congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) group). The remaining 138 (non-CRS group) became deaf for a variety of other reasons. No significant differences were found between groups in puretone thresholds for frequencies measured at octave intervals from 250 thru 8000 Hz.

Improving nighttime mobility in persons with night blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa: A comparison of two low-vision mobility devices.

This study compared the effectiveness of the ITT Night Vision Viewer with the Wide Angle Mobility Lamp (WAML) as low-vision mobility devices for people experiencing night blindness due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Both engineering bench testing and functional evaluations were used in the assessments. Engineering evaluations were conducted for (1) consistency of the manufacturer's specifications, (2) ergonomic characteristics, (3) modifications of devices, and (4) pedestrian safety issues. Twenty-seven patients with RP conducted rehabilitation evaluations with each device that included both cl

Holmes and Horrax (1919) revisited: impaired binocular fusion as a cause of "flat vision" after right parietal brain damage - a case study.

The complete loss of binocular depth perception ("flat vision") was first thoroughly described by Holmes and Horrax (1919), and has been occasionally reported thereafter in patients with bilateral posterior-parietal lesions. Though partial spontaneous recovery occurred in some cases, the precise cause(s) of this condition remained obscure for almost a century. Here, we describe a unique patient (EH) with a large right-sided occipito-parietal hemorrhage showing a complete loss of visual depth perception for several months post-stroke. EH could well simultaneously describe multiple visual object
