Interactions of the B-complex vitamins are essential in the performance of metabolic and catabolic reactions in the body. Even vitamin C and the fat-soluble vitamins may be involved in these interactions. Clinical and biochemical aberrations associated with various disease states can often be explained on the basis of these vitamin interrelationships. Health and nutritional well-being are dependent upon the maintenance and proper functioning of these vitamin-dependent metabolic pathways.

BACKGROUND: Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a commonly used inhaled anesthetic in outpatient dental procedures. However, the increasing recreational use of N2O may result in vitamin B12 deficiency-related neurologic and psychiatric symptoms. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the clinical features of chronic N2O abuse in pediatric patients.
METHODS: Patients under 20 years of age who were diagnosed with N2O-induced subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord from 2012 to 2018 were enrolled in this study. Clinical presentations, laboratory, imaging, ancillary studies, treatments and outcome

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG)-like ulcerations are a rare clinical manifestation of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) mutation. We describe a patient considered to have PG who was treated with long-term high doses of systemic corticosteroids and multiple immunosuppressive agents for several years. In spite of this continuous aggressive therapy, the lesions did not improve but continued to get worse. She developed many significant and catastrophic side effects to them. When referred to our dermatology centre, on investigation, it was discovered that she has an MTHFR mutation. It seemed re

Methionine is an essential amino acid found in rich quantities in average American diet such as meats, fish and eggs. Excessive consumption of such food often exceeds the normal requirement of the methionine in our body; which found to be related to the development of neurodegenerative disorders. However, the mechanistic pathways of methionine's influence on the brain are unclear. The present study is focus on the effects of high methionine, low folate and low vitamin B6/B12 (HM-LF-LV) diet on the dysfunction of neuronal and vascular specific markers in the brain. In developed countries, vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency usually occurs in children, exclusively breastfed ones whose mothers are vegetarian, causing low body stores of vitamin B12. The haematologic manifestation of vitamin B12 deficiency is pernicious anaemia. It is a megaloblastic anaemia with high mean corpuscular volume and typical morphological features, such as hyperlobulation of the nuclei of the granulocytes. In advanced cases, neutropaenia and thrombocytopaenia can occur, simulating aplastic anaemia or leukaemia. In addition to haematological symptoms, infants may experience weaknes

Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs in 5-10% of the Dutch population. Serum vitamin B12 levels should be determined in patients with haematological or neurological disorders such as megaloblastic anaemia or neuropathy, and in patients with risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency such as atrophic gastritis or intrinsic factor-deficiency. The aim of this article was to explicate the data from the literature on the efficacy of oral versus parenteral vitamin B12 supplementation. Two randomised, controlled trials have shown that oral supplementation of 1000-2000 microg/day of vitamin B12 is equally effec

PURPOSE: Adequate status in vitamins B9 and B12 supports neurological processes, and observational studies consistently associate sufficient intake with enhanced cognitive performance in adolescents. However, causal evidence on whether food fortification with these vitamins improves cognition in healthy adolescent girls remains scarce. This study evaluated the effect of consuming vitamin B9- and B12-fortified corn flour on the cognitive function of teenage girls in Arba Minch, South Ethiopia.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, controlled community trial from December 2023 to Au

RATIONALE: Several studies have reported subacute combined degeneration (SCD) induced by nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse. However, few studies have reported that N2O-induced SCD recurred because of sleeve gastrectomy after neurological symptoms improved.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of an 18-year-old woman who developed paresthesia, weakness in 4 limbs, and an unstable gait after frequent, excessive N2O inhalation.
DIAGNOSIS: The patient was diagnosed as having SCD.
INTERVENTIONS AND OUTCOMES: Nineteen days after intravenous mecobalamin and supplementation with other kinds of vitamin B, h

Multivitamins are commonly consumed over-the-counter supplements. Drug reactions related to multivitamins are rare and very few cases have been reported. This is a case of a young woman who developed bullous fixed drug eruption to multivitamins.

The central position of methionine (Met) in protein metabolism indicates the importance of this essential amino acid for growth and maintenance of lean body mass. Therefore, Met might be a tempting candidate for supplementation. However, because Met is also the precursor of homocysteine (Hcy), a deficient intake of B vitamins or excessive intake of Met may result in hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This review discusses the evidence generated in preclinical and clinical studies on the importance and potentially harmful effects of Met supplementati

Neuroinflammatory oxidative stress occurs early in AD pathology. Elevated blood Hcy is a useful marker for such neuroinflammation. Hcy contributes to pathological cascades involving AP and NFTs. In AD, Hcy should be lowered by B-vitamin supplements and NAC.

We report case of an infant who presented with failure to thrive and developmental delay at 4 months of age. He was diagnosed to have vitamin B12 deficiency and antibodies to intrinsic factor secondary to undiagnosed maternal pernicious anemia. The child was treated with hydroxocobalamin and now at 2 years of age, he is developing and growing within normal range. We review the literature on this rare cause of cobalamin deficiency in infants. We highlight the factors determining the outcome and situations where raised index of suspicion could help in recognizing this preventable cause of develo

In the past decade, the understanding of folate bioavailability, metabolism and related health issues has increased, but several problems remain, including the difficulty of delivering the available knowledge to the populations at risk. Owing to the low compliance of taking folic acid supplements, for example, among women of child-bearing age who could lower the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, food-based strategies aimed at increasing the intake of folate and other B-group vitamins should be a priority for future research. These should include the development of a combined str

The aim of the study was to determine, in a group of patients with therapy-resistant burning mouth syndrome (BMS), the possible deficiency of vitamins B1, B2, and B6 and the effect of proper vitamin replacement therapy. Sixteen individuals, aged 47 to 81 years, participated in the study. All underwent a base-line examination comprising anamnestic information, subjective assessment of symptoms, dietary registration, salivary analysis, and serum analysis of thiamine (B1), riboflavine (B2), and pyridoxine (B6). Fifteen individuals had low thiamine and/or riboflavine levels in accordance with sugg
