Ectopic "Ectopic" Gastric Mucosa.

Meckel's diverticulum is a developmental GI anomaly. It is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct (vitelline duct) and the most common congenital anomaly found in the small intestine. It contains ectopic/heterotopic gastric mucosa in half of the cases. Imaging investigations for diagnosing Meckel's diverticulum may include a plain radiography; however, this has a very limited diagnostic value. A blind-ending fluid-filled structure can sometimes be seen with sonography, but again, this technique's diagnostic value is limited due to multiple factors. A CT scan may be helpful in localizing the b

A new species of Bivesiculoides (Digenea: Bivesiculidae) infecting atherinid fishes of the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia.

We describe a new species of Bivesiculidae, Bivesiculoides maiae n. sp., from Hypoatherina tropicalis (Whitley) (Atherinidae) collected from off Heron Island (southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia). Bivesiculoides maiae n. sp. is morphologically consistent with Bivesiculoides Yamaguti, 1938 in the entirely pre-testicular position of its uterus, and the possession of caeca and vitelline fields that extend posteriorly to level with the anterior extremity of the testis. The new species is morphologically distinct from the six known Bivesiculoides species in body size and shape, and s

Involvement in Fertilization and Expression of Gamete Ubiquitin-Activating Enzymes UBA1 and UBA6 in the Ascidian Halocynthia roretzi.

The extracellular ubiquitin-proteasome system is involved in sperm binding to and/or penetration of the vitelline coat (VC), a proteinaceous egg coat, during fertilization of the ascidian (Urochordata) Halocynthia roretzi. It is also known that the sperm receptor on the VC, HrVC70, is ubiquitinated and degraded by the sperm proteasome during the sperm penetration of the VC and that a 700-kDa ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme complex is released upon sperm activation on the VC, which is designated the "sperm reaction". However, the de novo function of ubiquitin-activating enzyme (UBA/E1) during fert

NLRP3 Inflammasome-Targeting Nanomicelles for Preventing Ischemia-Reperfusion-Induced Inflammatory Injury.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a disease process that affects several vital organs. There is widespread agreement that the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway plays a crucial role in the development of I/R injury. We have developed transferrin-conjugated, pH-responsive nanomicelles for the entrapment of MCC950 drug. These nanomicelles specifically bind to the transferrin receptor 1 (TFR1) expressed on the cells of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and thus help the cargo to cross the BBB. Furthermore, the therapeutic potential of nanomicelles was assessed using in vitro, in ovo, and in vivo models of

Meckel's diverticulum causing acute intestinal obstruction: A case report and comprehensive review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly that is often detected incidentally. When it presents symptomatically, it causes painless gastrointestinal bleeding. Nevertheless, in rare instances, it can cause acute intestinal obstruction, often obscuring the true clinical picture. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old male presented to the emergency department with a 24-h history of unremitting nausea, biliary emesis, abdominal distension, and absolute constipation. After ruling out the most common etiologies of acute bowel obstruction, radiological imaging was obtained and was sugge

Effect of celecoxib against different developmental stages of experimental Schistosoma mansoni infection.

Due to the high prevalence of schistosomiasis and the wide use of praziquantel solely for mass drug administration to control the disease, there is a great concern about the potential emergence of reduced susceptibility strains. This, together with the concern that praziquantel is ineffective against juvenile worms highlight the importance of developing an alternative anti-schistosomal drug. Using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs against schistosome infection is considerable. The present study evaluated the effect of oral administration of five days celecoxib regimen (20 mg/kg/day) against

Early onset of changes to the reproductive system of Fasciola hepatica following in vivo treatment with triclabendazole.

Lambs infected with the Cullompton triclabendazole (TCBZ)-susceptible isolate of Fasciola hepatica were treated with TCBZ at a dosage of 10mg/kg at 16 weeks post-infection. Adult flukes were recovered from the liver at 3h, 24h, 48 h and 60 h post-treatment (pt). They were processed for histological analysis of the uterus, Mehlis' gland, vitellaria, ovary and testis. At 3h pt, the flukes were essentially similar to the controls and were producing normal eggs. Egg production had ceased by 24h pt. At this time period, the cells of the Mehlis' gland showed some evidence of vacuolation, but otherwi

Comparative analysis of two fatty acid binding proteins from Fasciola gigantica.

Fatty acid binding proteins are considered to be promising vaccine candidates against trematodiasis. In order to provide additional information about their function in Fasciola gigantica we performed a comparative analysis of FgFABP1 and FgFABP3, two isoforms with quite different isoelectric points of 4.9 and 9.9 and 67% sequence identity. Both are expressed in the juvenile and adult parasite but differ in their tissue-specific distribution. In addition, the sequence of FABP3 is identical in F. hepatica and F. gigantica indicating the protein's functional importance in this genus. Immune sera

Effect of ethanol on the development of visceral yolk sac.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal ethanol exposure can cause development retardation and malformations in human offspring. Before the formation of chorioallantoic placenta, yolk sac plays an important role in transporting nutrients from the mother to the embryo. Functional suppression of yolk sac is found to be relevant to the malformations in mammalian embryos. METHODS: Female 8.5-day C57BL/6J mouse embryos were cultured in vitro and exposed to different doses of ethanol. The development of visceral yolk sac (VYS) was examined with light and electron microscopes. The expression profiles of some vasculoge

The physiology and toxicology of salmonid eggs and larvae in relation to water quality criteria.

The purpose of this review is to collate physiological knowledge on salmonid eggs and larvae in relation to water quality criteria. Salmonid genera reviewed include Coregonus, Thymallus, Salvelinus, Salmo, and Oncorhynchus spp. When physiological data for salmonids are lacking, the zebrafish and medaka models are included. The primary focus is on the underlying mechanisms involved in the hydro-mineral, thermal, and respiratory biology with an extended section on the xenobiotic toxicology of the early stages. Past and present data reveal that the eggs of salmonids are among the largest shed by

Effect of feeding guanidinoacetic acid and L-arginine on the fertility rate and sperm penetration in the perivitelline layer of aged broiler breeder hens.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) and L-arginine (ARG) on fertility and sperm penetration (SP) rate of broiler breeder hens. In the first experiment, a total of 200 broiler breeder hens (Ross 308) aged 53 weeks were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments (0, 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g GAA/kg diet) with five replicates of 10 birds each. In the second experiment, 320 broiler breeder hens (Ross 308) were used from 53 to 62 weeks of age in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement (0 or 1.2 g GAA/kg diet along with 0, 3, 6 or 9 g ARG/kg diet). The hens

Cleft palate induction: quantitative studies of 3H corticoids in A/Jax mouse tissues after maternal injections of 3H cortisol.

A/Jax mice were injected with 50 muCi of 3H cortisol and 10 mg of cortisone acetate on day 12 of gestation. At various intervals after injection, the maternal liver, placenta, yolk sac, and the fetal jaws were removed and analyzed by thin-layer chromatography in conjunction with oxidative combustion and liquid scintillation counting to identify and measure the amount of labeled corticoid metabolites. The results support the thesis that these corticoids may induce clefts by an individual or combined direct action on the fetal jaws and palatal shelf tissue.

Esophageal atresia, small omphalocele and ileal prolapse through a patent omphalomesenteric duct: a methimazole embryopathy? [Corrected].

Newborns prenatally exposed to methimazole (active metabolite of carbamizole) for maternal hyperthyroidism may present some disorders in common, but the phenotype is not well defined. Choanal atresia is the most frequent, and other anomalies such as esophageal atresia and aplasia cutis were described with this embryopathy. Additionally, patent omphalomesenteric duct or Meckel's diverticulum in similar association was reported in some patients. The predisposed genetic background has to be considered. We report the case of a newborn exposed to carbamizole during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy an

Portal hypertensive cardiovascular pathology: the rescue of ancestral survival mechanisms?

The portal system derives from the vitelline system, which is an extra-embryonic venous system. It could be suggested that this extraembryonic origin determines some of the characteristics attributed to portal hypertension, both compensated, i.e. prehepatic, and decompensated, i.e. fibrotic or cirrhotic. The experimental models most frequently used for studying both types of portal hypertension are portal vein ligation and common bile duct ligation in rats, respectively. We propose that in partial portal vein ligated rats, a low-grade inflammatory response, formed by the successive expression

Cutaneous remnants of the vitellointestinal duct: a clinico-pathological study of 19 cases.

The presence of cutaneous vitellointestinal duct remnants was confirmed histologically in 19 cases in the period 1970-1984. These lesions occurred mostly in males (16 males, 3 females), and 80% in children under the age of five years. One case was identified in an adult, suggesting that these lesions may in some cases cause little inconvenience, and that their true incidence is underestimated.

Molecular phylogeny of Pseudoglaridacris (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) and redescription of its type species, P. laruei, the most common cestode parasite of the white sucker (Catostomus commersonii) in North America.

Caryophyllidean tapeworms (Cestoda) are widespread parasites of suckers (Catostomidae) in North America, but their phylogenetic relationships remain poorly understood. This study presents molecular data on species of the recently established genus Pseudoglaridacris Oros, Uhrovič et Scholz, 2018. The type species, P. laruei (Lamont, 1921), a very common parasite of the white sucker Catostomus commersonii (Catostomidae) in North America, is characterised both molecularly and morphologically based on recently collected, properly fixed specimens from the type host (C. commersonii) and four species

Effects of parental care on skin microbial community composition in poison frogs.

Parent-offspring interactions constitute the first contact of many newborns with their environment, priming community assembly of microbes through priority effects and shaping host health and disease. Microbe acquisition during parental care is well studied in humans and agriculturally relevant species but remains poorly understood in other vertebrate groups, such as amphibians. Here, we investigate vertical transmission of skin microbiota in poison frogs (Dendrobatidae), where fathers transport tadpoles piggyback-style from terrestrial clutches to aquatic nurseries. We found that substantial

The human gestational sac as a choriovitelline placenta during early pregnancy; the secondary yolk sac and organoid models.

The yolk sac is phylogenetically the oldest of the extra-embryonic membranes and plays important roles in nutrient transfer during early pregnancy in many species. In the human this function is considered largely vestigial, in part because the secondary yolk sac never makes contact with the inner surface of the chorionic sac. Instead, it is separated from the chorion by the fluid-filled extra-embryonic coelom and attached to the developing embryo by a relatively long vitelline duct. The coelomic fluid is, however, rich in nutrients and key co-factors, including folic acid and anti-oxidants, de
