Language growth in children with expressive language delay.

Developmental expressive language disorder is a frequently occurring condition in children, characterized by severe delay in the development … vement could be accounted for by three child variables measured by the pretest: parentally reported vocabulary size, parentally reported problems with having regular meals, and observed frequency of quiet activity not requiring the parent's management. A screening procedure involving only one of those variables, reported vocabulary size, was 81% accurate in …

Teaching a foreign language using multisensory structured language techniques to at-risk learners: a review.

An overview of multisensory structured language (MSL) techniques used to teach a foreign language to at-risk students is outlined. Research supporting the use of MSL techniques is reviewed. Specific activities using the MSL approach to teach the phonology/orthography, grammar and vocabulary of the foreign language as well as reading and communicative activities in the foreign language are presented.

Reading Comprehension and Orthographic Consistency: Modeling Direct and Indirect Pathways in Children With Reading Difficulties.

PURPOSE: This study examined how orthographic transparency shapes reading comprehension (RC) among third-grade students with reading difficulties (RD). Hebrew provides a within-language test case that features both transparent and opaque scripts, thus minimizing confounds that arise in cross-language comparisons. METHOD: Using path analysis, we modeled the direct and indirect associations of phonological awareness (PA), morphological awareness (MA), orthographic processing, morphosyntactic awareness (MSA), vocabulary, word reading fluency, and executive function (EF) skills with RC in each sc…

Language use and attitudinal patterns among Spanish- and Vietnamese-speaking bilingual children in the United States.

Heterogeneity in childhood bilingualism reflects differences between bilingual groups as well as variation within a group. We investigate children's language attitudes, use, and proficiency in their first language (L1) and second language, English, in two bilingual groups. We examine between-group differences in a sample of bilingual children (N = 122, age range 5 to 10) who speak an L1 of Spanish (n= 55) or Vietnamese (n= 67); within-group differences are measured by chronological age, nativity, and schooling. Participants completed vocabulary tasks in their L1 and English and an individually…

Comparing criteria for deviation from hearing aid prescriptive targets in children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a stricter criterion for paediatric hearing aid fitting for proximity of fit-to-target of <3 dB root-mean-square (RMS) error produces better audibility and outcomes compared to the current <5 dB criterion, and to examine the relationship between aided audibility and RMS error by degree of hearing loss. DESIGN: We evaluated the influence of unaided hearing level on the relationship between RMS error and aided audibility. We assessed the effect of RMS error category (<3, 3-5, >5 dB) on aided audibility, speech recognition, expressive vocabulary, and morphosyntax. STU…

Which Data Do Elementary School Teachers Use to Determine Reading Difficulties in Their Students?

Small-group interventions allow for tailored instruction for students with learning difficulties. A crucial first step is the accurate ident … s, and a subsample of 370 children participated in standardized tests of phonological awareness and vocabulary. Findings show that teachers' decisions with regard to students' needing a reading intervention overlapped more with results from standardized spelling assessments than from reading assessments. Hierarchical linear models indicated that students' sp …

Speech Perception in Noise Predicts Oral Narrative Comprehension in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

We examined the relative contribution of auditory processing abilities (tone perception and speech perception in noise) after controlling for short-term memory capacity and vocabulary, to narrative language comprehension in children with developmental language disorder. Two hundred and sixteen children with developmental language disorder, ages 6 to 9 years (Mean = 7; 6), were administered multiple measures. The dependent variable was children's score on the narrative comprehension scale of the Test of Narrative Language. Predictors were auditory processing abilities, phonological short-term m…

A Model of Chinese Spelling Development in Hong Kong Kindergarteners.

Copying characters presented previously (delayed copying) is an important skill in Chinese literacy acquisition. The relations of delayed copying and a set of literacy-related skills (including vocabulary knowledge, rapid automatized naming, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and orthographic awareness), visual-orthographic judgment, motor coordination, pure copying of foreign scripts, and delayed copying to Chinese spelling were examined among 294 typically developing Hong Kong kindergarteners. With all other variables statistically controlled, rapid automatized naming, phonolog…

RESULTS: Neopterin/creatinine levels were negatively correlated with change in the MOMT total score (Spearman's Rho=-0.517, p=0.020) and change in the MOMT delayed recall score (Spearman's Rho=-0.577, p=0.0 …

This variation was present despite within-subject stability on the WAIS-R Vocabulary and Block Design subtests. The results reveal career-long changes across three analytical domains: negative-emotion vocabulary declines monotonically while positive and neutral categories show no statistically detectable trend; first-person pronouns, somatic vocabulary, grammatical agency, and cognitive certainty converge in decline across four distinct linguistic layers; e …

Language and executive function in Mandarin-speaking deaf and hard-of-hearing children aged 3-5.

The study aimed to explore spoken language and executive function (EF) characteristics in 3-5-year-old prelingually deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children, and evaluate the impact of demographic variables and EF on spoken language skills. 48 DHH children and 48 typically developing children who use auditory-oral communication were recruited. All participants underwent EF tests, including auditory working memory (WM), inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and the EF performance reported by parents. Using Mandarin Clinical Evaluation of Language for Preschoolers (MCELP), vocabulary compreh…

Psychometric properties of the standardized assessment of concussion in youth football: Validity, reliability, and demographic factors.

The objective of this study was to determine the psychometrics (reliability, validity) of the original Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC) in a youth sample (ages 11 to 13). Demographic factors of race, level of vocabulary knowledge, mother's level of education were also considered. Over 150 youth football athletes completed the SAC and a brief battery of NIH Toolbox cognitive tests as part of a larger study on biomechanical factors in youth sport concussion. This was a within-subjects design (pre-season, post-season assessments), and correlational analysis of convergent and discrimina…

Use of the language development survey (LDS) in a national probability sample of children 18 to 35 months old.

Data are reported from a national probability sample used to norm the Language Development Survey (LDS; L. Rescorla, 1989) and the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1 1/2-5 (CBCL/1 1/25; T. M. Achenbach & L. Rescorla, 2000). Participants were 278 children 18 to 35 months old who were highly diverse in socioeconomic status (SES), ethnic composition, and language background. Vocabulary scores increased markedly with age, were somewhat higher in girls, and were modestly correlated with SES. Children of non-Latino White ethnicity had significantly higher vocabulary scores and mean length of phrase…

Narrating care and medical authority in Egyptian fiction: a medical humanities approach.

This article analyses how Egyptian novels construct experiences of medicine, care and institutional authority through comparative close readings of Naguib Mahfouz's The Day the Leader Was Killed, Youssef Ziedan's Azazeel, Ahmed Mourad's The Blue Elephant and Nawal El Saadawi's Woman at Point Zero Situated in medical humanities, it treats literature as narrative knowledge production, articulating ethical and experiential dimensions of medicine beyond empirical documentation. Drawing on narrative and institutional theory, the article develops a four-part analytical vocabulary-bureaucratic waitin…
