Vocal fatigue in young trained singers across a solo performance: a preliminary study.

This preliminary study aimed to measure changes in vocal function across a solo vocal performance task. Five participants, all trained singers, were required to complete a 10-min standard vocal warm-up, sing from a familiar repertoire for 40 min, and rest their voices for 10 min. Vocal function data were collected at 10-min intervals throughout the experimental session. Acoustic perturbation, sound pressure level and semitone pitch indices were employed as objective vocal function measures. A visual analogue scale and checklist of vocal fatigue symptoms were employed as self-report measures. R

Unveiling vocal profiles in adolescent anorexia nervosa: a Software Based, Multiparametric Analysis.

Dysphonia, characterized by disturbances in voice quality and modulation, has been sporadically observed in individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), potentially stemming from both organic and psychopathological factors. This study seeks to employ software-based voice analysis to compare the voices of girls with AN to those of female healthy controls (HC). Case-control study adopting "Praat" software to assess voices. Various parameters, including Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), Fundamental Frequency (F0), Yanagihara's Spectrographic Dysphonia Classifications, and "GIRBAS" perceptual qualit…

PVR-Vocoder: A Pathological Voice Repair Vocoder for Voice Disorders.

Vocoder-based speech synthesis has become a promising technique to accommodate the demands of high-quality speech analysis, manipulation, and synthesis. However, most existing works focus on how to synthesize normal human voice with high signal-to-noise ratio, neglecting individuals' pathological voice disorder in speech interaction. In this work, we propose a non-linear voice repair vocoder for pathological vowels and sentences, which takes the pathological speech as input and generates high-quality repaired speech. Our approach is specifically designed to enhance the speech quality and intel

Intelligibility of dysphonic speech in auralized classrooms.

Voice disorders can reduce the speech intelligibility of affected speakers. This study evaluated the effect of noise, voice disorders, and room acoustics on vowel intelligibility, listening easiness, and the listener's reaction time. Three adult females with dysphonia and three adult females with normal voice quality recorded a series of nine vowels of American English in /h/-V-/d/ format (e.g., "had"). The recordings were convolved with two oral-binaural impulse responses acquired from measurements in two classrooms with 0.4 and 3.1 s of reverberation time, respectively. The stimuli were pres…

Voice activity and participation profile: assessing the impact of voice disorders on daily activities.

Traditional clinical voice evaluation focuses primarily on the severity of voice impairment, with little emphasis on the impact of voice disorders on the individual's quality of life. This study reports the development of a 28-item assessment tool that evaluates the perception of voice problem, activity limitation, and participation restriction using the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps-2 Beta-1 concept (World Health Organization, 1997). The questionnaire was administered to 40 subjects with dysphonia and 40 control subjects with normal voices. Results sh

The effectiveness of voice therapy for patients with non-organic dysphonia.

Forty-five patients diagnosed as having non-organic dysphonia were assigned in rotation to one of three groups. Patients in one group received no treatment and acted as a control group. Patients in the other two groups received a programme of either 'indirect' therapy or 'direct with indirect' therapy, respectively. A self-report questionnaire of vocal performance, observed ratings of voice quality, and computer-derived acoustic measurements (signal-to-noise ratio, pitch perturbation and amplitude perturbation) were carried out on all patients before and after treatment to evaluate the changes…

The Effect of Pitch and Loudness Auditory Feedback Perturbations on Vocal Quality During Sustained Phonation.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphonia is a reduction in vocal quality that impacts communication and is often an early sign of a voice disorder. There is little information regarding the effects of auditory feedback control of loudness and pitch on voice quality. In this study, we used both loudness-shift and pitch-shift paradigms to study the relationship between auditory feedback control and vocal quality as measured by smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS), which reflects the harmonicity of the voice signal. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental, mixed design. METHODS: We applied 200 ms loudness-shifts (± 0, 3, o…
