The impact and feasibility of a brief, virtual, educational intervention for home healthcare professionals on Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders: pilot study of I SEE PD Home.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with advanced Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Parkinson-related disorders (PRD) are frequently referred for home allied therapies and nursing care, yet home healthcare professionals have limited training in PD/PRD. While recognizing the need for such care, patients and families report home healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with these conditions, which may be driven by neurophobia and may contribute to suboptimal care and early termination of services. We sought to determine the feasibility and effects of a virtual, multimodal educational intervention on PD knowledge,

Evaluating the delay prior to primary care presentation in patients with lung cancer: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about 'within-patient delay', which is the time from first symptom of lung cancer to contacting primary care. AIM: Primary outcomes were length of within-patient delay and the proportion of total delay it represents. Secondary outcomes were factors causing delay and survival. DESIGN & SETTING: A cohort study of newly diagnosed patients with lung cancer at two hospitals in Norfolk. METHOD: Patients completed questionnaires regarding onset of symptoms, whether they had delayed, and their reasons. GPs completed correlating questionnaires. Pathway times and other dat

Filmless in 60 days: the impact of picture archiving and communications systems within a large urban hospital.

Many large urban hospitals converting to filmless radiography use a phased approach for digital imaging implementation. In fact, this strategy often is recommended by picture archival communication systems (PACS) experts and vendors alike for large, busy hospitals installing PACS in existing physical facilities. The concern is that comprehensive conversion from film-based to digital imaging may be too overwhelming an adjustment in operations for a medical staff to effectively handle without serious disruption of workflow for patient treatment and care. Elmhurst Hospital Center is a 543-bed hos

Effects of age and hearing loss on recognition of unaccented and accented multisyllabic words.

The effects of age and hearing loss on recognition of unaccented and accented words of varying syllable length were investigated. It was hypothesized that with increments in length of syllables, there would be atypical alterations in syllable stress in accented compared to native English, and that these altered stress patterns would be sensitive to auditory temporal processing deficits with aging. Sets of one-, two-, three-, and four-syllable words with the same initial syllable were recorded by one native English and two Spanish-accented talkers. Lists of these words were presented in isolati

Frontline workers in India's tuberculosis (TB) elimination efforts: a street-level bureaucracy perspective.

BACKGROUND: India's fight against Tuberculosis (TB) has evolved from the National Tuberculosis (TB) Control Program (NTCP) in 1962 to the current National TB Elimination Program (NTEP), guided by the National Strategic Plan (2020-2025). Despite ambitious goals, TB incidence remains high at 199 cases per lakh, with only a 3% annual reduction, far from the 15% target. Systemic issues, especially in human resources, hamper effective policy implementation. Frontline workers (FWs), crucial to the program, face heavy workloads, inadequate upgradation of training, and limited support, yet their voice

Mechanisms of mindfulness in patients with migraine: Results of a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the mechanisms of mindfulness' impact on migraine. BACKGROUND: Promising mindfulness research demonstrates potential benefit in migraine, but no data-driven model exists from the lived experiences of patients that explains the mechanisms of mindfulness in migraine. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with adults with migraine who participated in two mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) clinical trials (n = 43). Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and summarized into a framework matrix with development of a master codebook. Con

Quality Standard for Rehabilitation of Young Deaf Children Receiving Cochlear Implants.

Background and objectives: More and more children with severe-to-profound hearing loss are receiving cochlear implants (CIs) at an early age to improve their hearing and listening abilities, speech recognition, speech intelligibility, and other aspects of spoken language development. Despite this, the rehabilitation outcomes can be very heterogeneous in this population, not only because of issues related to surgery and fitting or the specific characteristics of the child with his/her additional disabilities but also because of huge differences in the quality of the support and rehabilitation o

Gender-based discrimination shapes psychological safety and professional identity in clinical settings: a qualitative study of nursing, midwifery, and medical students.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based discrimination remains a persistent structural challenge in health professions education and may shape students' access to learning opportunities, sense of belonging, and professional identity formation. Psychological safety is essential for participation in clinical learning; however, little is known about how gendered experiences are perceived to influence psychological safety, professional identity, and resilience among nursing, midwifery, and medical students. METHODS: This qualitative study explored how nursing, midwifery, and medical students experience gender-b

What slows the progress of health systems strengthening at subnational level? A political economy analysis of three districts in Uganda.

There is increasing recognition that without stronger health systems, efforts to improve global health and Universal Health Coverage cannot be achieved. Over the last three decades, initiatives to strengthen health systems in low-income countries have attracted huge investments in the context of achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as Universal Health Coverage. Yet, health system inadequacies persist, especially at the subnational level. Our paper presents a political economy analysis featuring a three-district case study in Uganda, where distr

Effects of hearing acuity on psychophysiological responses to effortful speech perception.

In recent studies, psychophysiological measures have been used as markers of listening effort, but there is limited research on the effect of hearing loss on such measures. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of hearing acuity on physiological responses and subjective measures acquired during different levels of listening demand, and to investigate the relationship between these measures. A total of 125 participants (37 males and 88 females, age range 37-72 years, pure-tone average hearing thresholds at the best ear between -5.0 to 68.8 dB HL and asymmetry between ears b

Expanding care for perinatal women with depression (EXPONATE): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of an intervention package for perinatal depression in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Depression is common among women during perinatal period and is associated with long-term adverse consequences for the mother and infant. In Nigeria, as in many other low- and-middle-income countries (LMIC), perinatal depression usually goes unrecognized and untreated. The aim of EXPONATE is to test the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an intervention package for perinatal depression delivered by community midwives in primary maternal care in which physician support and enhanced patient compliance are implemented using mobile phones. Using the Venom of a Snake for an Antidote: exploring strategies and services for sex workers in preparation for the World Cup 2014.

AIMS: This article considers the public health implications that were predicted by sex workers a year prior to the FIFA World Cup 2014, with considerations towards the Olympic Games in 2016. Primary research conducted in 2013 in Brazil's second largest city, Rio de Janeiro, gave sex workers and civil society organizations the opportunity to voice concerns of the everyday disadvantages faced by those involved in the sex industry, with emphasis on what could cause further detriments from acting as a double draw international sporting host. This research largely took place through invitation at t

Automated telephone communication systems for preventive healthcare and management of long-term conditions.

BACKGROUND: Automated telephone communication systems (ATCS) can deliver voice messages and collect health-related information from patients using either their telephone's touch-tone keypad or voice recognition software. ATCS can supplement or replace telephone contact between health professionals and patients. There are four different types of ATCS: unidirectional (one-way, non-interactive voice communication), interactive voice response (IVR) systems, ATCS with additional functions such as access to an expert to request advice (ATCS Plus) and multimodal ATCS, where the calls are delivered as

Music education as an integrative self-regulatory experience: A qualitative study of Chinese university students' perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on music education has often examined cognitive development, psychological well-being, or academic engagement as separate domains, and has frequently relied on quantitative or outcome-oriented designs. Less attention has been given to how university students themselves interpret and make sense of music education in relation to these interconnected aspects of their academic and personal lives. This study addresses this gap by exploring non-music university students' perceptions of how engagement with music education relates to cognitive processes, psychological wel

The surgical airway.

Traumatic airway injuries are rare in children, partly due to their unique anatomy. The larynx is well protected from direct blows behind the mandibular arch, and only a small portion of the trachea is unprotected above the manubrium due to the relatively short neck. Furthermore, the tracheobronchial tree is less prone to injuries as compared with adults due to its elasticity. A high index of suspicion is thus needed to adequately diagnose and manage pediatric airway injuries. Laryngotracheal injuries in particular may present with discreet initial symptoms that if undiagnosed may rapidly prog

The European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry achieves Q1 status: a strategic advancement in specialised dental publishing.

The European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry (EJPD) has attained a significant milestone by entering the first quartile (Q1) in the 2024 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), curated by Clarivate Analytics, in both the "Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine" and "Paediatrics" categories". This dual recognition is a rare and significant achievement for a journal exclusively devoted to paediatric dentistry, underscoring its growing influence within both the dental and broader medical research communities. Since its initial inclusion in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in 2010, the European Journal of P

A Controlled Single-Speaker Evaluation of Ambient Voice Technologies' Speech-to-Text Function Using Narrated Surgical Case-Reports.

Ambient voice technologies (AVT) utilise automatic speech recognition (ASR) and generative artificial intelligence for speech-to-text conversion, and are advocated as efficient, accurate tools for clinical documentation. We investigated (n = 8) AVT systems using surgical case-reports as narratives in a controlled single-speaker evaluation prioritising safety outcomes: specifically 3 commercial transcription-systems (Dragon-Medical-One, Heidi-Health, Tortus); 4 ASR speech-to-text Application Programming Interfaces (Speechmatics-Enhanced, Amazon-Medical-Transcribe, Whisper, GPT4oTranscribe); and
