Influence of ventilatory parameters on the concentration of exhaled volatile organic compounds in mechanically ventilated patients.

Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC) within exhaled breath is subject to numerous sources of methodological and physiological variability. Whilst breathing pattern is expected to influence the concentrations of selected exhaled VOCs, it remains challenging to investigate respiratory rate and depth accurately in awake subjects. Online breath sampling was performed in 20 mechanically ventilated patients using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS). The effect of variation in respiratory rate (RR) and tidal volume (TV) on the VOC release profiles was examin…

A Panel of Bile Volatile Organic Compounds Servers as a Potential Diagnostic Biomarker for Gallbladder Cancer.

As no reliable diagnostic methods are available, gallbladder cancer (GBC) is often diagnosed until advanced stages, resulting in a poor prognosis. In the present study, we assessed whether volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could be used as a diagnostic tool for GBC. The VOCs in bile samples collected from 32 GBC patients were detected by gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), and 54 patients with benign gallbladder diseases (BGD) were used as controls. Both principal component analysis and unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis gave a clear separation of GBC and BGD base…

New insights into the photo-degraded polystyrene microplastic: Effect on the release of volatile organic compounds.

Excessive use of plastics leads to the ubiquity of plastic waste in the environment. Weathering can cause changes in the properties of plastics and lead to the release of various chemicals especially the volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Possible photodegradation pathway of polystyrene (PS) microplastics (MPs) was proposed and verified by the detection of VOCs. Headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was employed to investigate the release behavior of VOCs from PS MPs exposed to simulated ultraviolet (UV). Results indicated that although the physicochemical properties of the PS MPs sh…

Attributing Increases in Ozone to Accelerated Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds at Reduced Nitrogen Oxides Concentrations.

Surface ozone (O3) is an important secondary pollutant affecting climate change and air quality in the atmosphere. Observations during the COVID-19 lockdown in urban China show that the co-abatement of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) caused winter ground-level O3 increases, but the chemical mechanisms involved are unclear. Here we report field observations in the Shanghai lockdown that reveals increasing photochemical formation of O3 from VOC oxidation with decreasing NOx. Analyses of the VOC profiles and NO/NO2 indicate that the O3 increases by the NOx reduction co…

Modelling the equilibrium partitioning of low concentrations of airborne volatile organic compounds in human IVF laboratories.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Can volatile organic compounds (VOC) be modelled in an IVF clinical setting? DESIGN: The study performed equilibrium modelling of low concentrations of airborne VOC partitioning from the air phase into the oil cover layer into the water-based culture media and into/onto the embryo (air-oil-water-embryo). The air-phase VOC were modelled based on reported VOC concentrations found in modern assisted reproductive technology (ART) suites, older IVF clinics, and hospitals, as well as at 10 parts per billion (ppb) and 100 ppb for all compounds. The modelling was performed with 23 …

Novel Porous Carbon Material for the Detection of Traces of Volatile Organic Compounds in Indoor Air.

A highly sensitive and selective silicon-based microanalytical prototype was used to identify a few ppb of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air. Herein, a new nonactivated tannin-derived carbon synthesized by an environmentally friendly method, DM2C, a MIL-101(Cr) MOF, and a DaY zeolite were selected for the preconcentration of BTEX compounds (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes). Integrating a small amount of these nanoporous solids inside a miniaturized preconcentration unit led to excellent preconcentration performance. By taking advantage of the high adsorption-des…

Self-wetting triphase photocatalysis for effective and selective removal of hydrophilic volatile organic compounds in air.

Photocatalytic air purification is widely regarded as a promising technology, but it calls for more efficient photocatalytic materials and systems. Here we report a strategy to introduce an in-situ water (self-wetting) layer on WO3 by coating hygroscopic periodic acid (PA) to dramatically enhance the photocatalytic removal of hydrophilic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. In ambient air, water vapor is condensed on WO3 to make a unique tri-phasic (air/water/WO3) system. The in-situ formed water layer selectively concentrates hydrophilic VOCs. PA plays the multiple roles as a water-layer…

Chemical Production of Oxygenated Volatile Organic Compounds Strongly Enhances Boundary-Layer Oxidation Chemistry and Ozone Production.

Photolysis of oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) produces a primary source of free radicals, including OH and inorganic and organic peroxy radicals (HO2 and RO2), consequently increasing photochemical ozone production. The amplification of radical cycling through OVOC photolysis provides an important positive feedback mechanism to accelerate ozone production. The large production of OVOCs near the surface helps promote photochemistry in the whole boundary layer. This amplifier effect is most significant in regions with high nitrogen oxides (NOx) and VOC concentrations such as Wangdu…
