Recent investigations indicate that wildfires provide a significant flux of mercury (Hg) from terrestrial ecosystems to the atmosphere. In the Baltimore-Washington Infant Study, a regional case-control study of 4,390 liveborn infants with cardiovascular malformations (CVM), 642 patients (14.2%) had outflow tract abnormalities, with extracardiac defects in 157 (approximately 25%) of them. Helminths are reported for the first time from ermines (Mustela erminea) and martens (Martes americana) in Washington (USA). BACKGROUND: The etiology of cryptorchidism is largely unknown. To identify maternal, perinatal, and delivery characteristics associated with cryptorchidism at birth, we conducted a population-based case-control study using Washington State birth certificates linked to birth hospitalization records.

Cuterebra tenebrosa Coquillett bot flies were studied under natural and laboratory conditions in bushy-tailed wood rats and 7 other small mammal host species. Larvae demonstrated strong host specificity for Neotoma cinerea. Monthly trapping samples of wood rats in central Washington showed infection peaks of 65--70% in May and 30--40% in late summer.
