From insect biodegradation to microbial upcycling: A closed-loop framework for plastic waste valorization.

Global plastic waste management requires low-energy, value-oriented strategies capable of handling heterogeneous and contaminated feedstocks. Insect-mediated plastic degradation offers a promising biological route, as larvae physically fragment plastics and, together with oxidative reactions, gut microorganisms, and host-derived enzymes, promote polymer depolymerization under mild conditions. However, this process generates frass containing residual micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), which limits the direct reuse of insect residues and may cause secondary environmental release. This review propos

Critical interdependencies between Plasmodium nutrient flux and drugs.

Nutrient import and waste efflux are critical dependencies for intracellular Plasmodium falciparum parasites. Nutrient transport proteins are often lineage specific and can provide unique targets for antimalarial drug development. P. falciparum nutrient transport pathways can be a double-edged sword for the parasite, not only mediating the import of nutrients and excretion of waste products but also providing an access route for drugs. Here we briefly summarise the nutrient acquisition pathways of intracellular P. falciparum blood-stage parasites and then highlight how these pathways influence…

Re-use of biologically treated wastewater of a brewery.

Despite excessive rainfalls, Flanders is dealing with a water deficiency. A rational use of water is a necessity. Apart from the prevention principle, the re-use of biologically treated wastewater (bio-effluent) is increasingly considered. From earlier research it is known that reverse osmosis (RO) is necessary for the elimination of salts and low molecular compounds from the bio-effluent. A thorough pretreatment is necessary to remove drastically the suspended solids, which are harmful to the reverse osmosis modules. This case study describes the experiments performed by SEGHERSbetter technol

Investigation of Exposure to Plasticizers Among Electronic Waste Recycling Workers and Their Health: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The global consumption of electronic and electrical products has increased the generation of electronic waste (e-waste), which poses environmental and public health concerns. In Vietnam, informal e-waste processing, characterized by unregulated collection and dismantling, is widespread and exposes workers to hazardous substances. However, data on the health status of e-waste workers remain limited, and exposure to phthalates, which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals widely used in electronics, has not yet been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the health status of e-

Effective incineration of fuel-waste slurries from several related industries.

This study is based on the analysis of a set of industrial sectors (coal processing, wood processing, transport, oil, and water treatment) in order to identify the amount and type of combustible waste suitable for incineration. The main ignition and combustion parameters of these wastes have been experimentally obtained from their direct individual incineration in the original form and as part of a slurry based on wastewater. It has been established that a set of parameters allow waste-derived fuel mixtures to compete with coal dust and fuel oil with an environmental advantage. In particular,

Using slaughterhouse waste in a biochemical-based biorefinery - results from pilot scale tests.

A novel biorefinery concept was piloted using protein-rich slaughterhouse waste, chicken manure and straw as feedstocks. The basic idea was to provide a proof of concept for the production of platform chemicals and biofuels from organic waste materials at non-septic conditions. The desired biochemical routes were 2,3-butanediol and acetone-butanol fermentation. The results showed that hydrolysis resulted only in low amounts of easily degradable carbohydrates. However, amino acids released from the protein-rich slaughterhouse waste were utilized and fermented by the bacteria in the process. Pro
