Burden of disease attributable to selected environmental factors and injury among children and adolescents in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposures contribute to the global burden of disease. We have estimated the burden of disease attributable to outdoor and indoor air pollution, inadequate water and sanitation, lead exposure, and injury among European children and adolescents. METHODS: Published studies and reports from international agencies were reviewed for calculation of risk-factor exposure in Europe. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) or deaths attributable to each factor, or both, were estimated by application of the potential impact fraction to the estimates of mortality and burden of dis

Assessment and phycoremediation of Yamuna river contaminants originating from the Najafgarh Drain, India, using LC-MS.

Yamuna River supplies over 70% water to the Indian capital Delhi. It has become one of the most polluted rivers globally, impacting the daily lives of over 57 million people. This study analyzes the changes in the water quality of the Yamuna River resulting from the inflow of wastewater from the Najafgarh Drain (Sahibi River) and investigates the phycoremediation potential of microalga Scenedesmus sp. Water quality parameters were assessed at the points where drains meet with the river, revealing significant degradation in water quality. Results show a 12.33 ± 0.5% decrease in pH and substanti

Remediation of the effect of adding cyanides on an algal/bacterial treatment of a mixture of organic pollutants in a continuous photobioreactor.

The effect of inorganic pollutants on the treatment of organic pollutants using algal/bacterial microcosm was investigated in a continuous photobioreactor. The microcosm was composed of Chlorella vulgaris MM1 and Pseudomonas MT1 and was able to efficiently treat artificial waste-water contaminated with 6.4 salicylate and 2.2 mM phenol at a hydraulic retention time of 4 days. No negative effect was recorded when the waste-water was supplemented with 1.6 mM thiocyanate; however, the treatment efficiency severely deteriorated when the system was challenged with 0.74 mM cyanide. Addition of 2 g Na

Distribution and potential risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) subjected to land function: A case of coastal water source area, China.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) represent emerging contaminants of global concern, yet their distribution in ecologically vulnerable coastal water source areas remains underexplored. This study investigated 29 PPCPs in environment across urban, rural, and reservoir areas within a low-pollution watershed in eastern Guangdong, China. Urban areas exhibited the highest PPCPs concentrations (surface water: 106.92 ng/L; sediment: 185.26 ng/g), followed by rural and reservoir areas. Tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones dominated the detected compounds. Statistical analysis revealed s

Occurrence and Risk Assessment of Typical Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in Surface and Drinking Water Across Four River Basins - Henan Province, China, 2025.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Bisphenols and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in aquatic ecosystems. Henan, a critical water conveyance region within the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, encompasses four river basins characterized by complex hydrological conditions. However, systematic monitoring of contaminant levels remains insufficient. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This study identified key priority pollutants and highlighted the dominance of short-chain PFASs in the region. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH

Health risks from acid rain: a Canadian perspective.

Acidic deposition, commonly referred to as acid rain, is causing serious environmental damage in eastern Canada. The revenues from forest products, tourism and sport fishing are estimated to account for about 8% of the gross national product. The impact on human health is not as clearcut and a multi-department program on the Long-Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants (LRTAP) was approved by the federal government in June 1980. The objectives of the LRTAP program are to reduce wet sulfate deposition to less than 20 kg/ha per year in order to protect moderately sensitive areas. This will requir

Evaluation of parasitic and tissue-specific accumulation of emerging contaminants in wild European chubs (Squalius cephalus) across the Seine River system.

Aquatic ecosystems are increasingly affected by chemical contamination from anthropogenic activities, yet the fate of pesticides and pharmaceutical residues within organisms remains poorly understood. Parasites can also significantly influence pollutant dynamics, through a high capacity for bioaccumulation. In this study, we quantified 60 emerging contaminants, including pesticides, antibiotics, and other pharmaceuticals, in surface waters, fish tissues (gills, liver, muscle), and intestinal acanthocephalan parasites of wild European chubs (Squalius cephalus) across multiple rivers of the Sein

Declining bacteria, lead, and sulphate, and rising pH and oxygen in the lower Mississippi River.

Various air and water pollution issues in the US were confronted in the last 60 years using national policy legislation, notably the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. I examine changes in the concentrations of bacteria, oxygen, lead, and sulphate at the terminus of the Mississippi River before and after these pollution abatement efforts. Microbial concentrations increased or were stable from 1909 to 1980 but decreased about 3 orders of magnitude after the 1970s, while the average oxygen content increased. A large decline in lead concentration occurred after the 1960s, along with a less dr…

Coalescence of As(II) with •OH: The pivot for co-processing of As(III) and butyl xanthate.

Although water metalloid pollution is widely studied, the effect of the combined pollution of organic matter and metalloids in mining water and, especially, the possible interaction mechanisms between metalloids and flotation reagents, are both poorly understood. Existence of mixed pollution of metalloids and organic compounds tends to cause more serious harm to natural organisms. In this study, a synergistic removal of arsenite (As(III)) and butyl xanthate (Bx) in an advanced oxidation system was reported using biochar-based catalyst loaded with nano-zero-valent iron from an inexpensive iron

Sources and extent of pollution.

Before the sources and extent of pollution can be identified a definition of pollutants has to be agreed. The degree of disruption of natural cycles in the global ecosystem in terms of residence times and assimilation capacities must be assessed as a prerequisite of any system of control. The sources of man-made and naturally occurring chemicals that fall into this definition can be categorized and these are presented for reference. Specific examples of these categories are discussed in detail, e.g. sulphur dioxide, polychlorinated biphenyls and radioactive waste. Their distribution and diluti
