The maximum tolerated dose of melphalan combined with whole body hyperthermia (WBH) in dogs with spontaneous malignant melanoma was lower than in dogs not receiving WBH by a factor of 1.9 +/- 0.71. Thirty-three dogs were treated monthly with escalating doses of melphalan and followed weekly for toxicity and, when possible, tumour response. Toxicity was manifested as myelosuppression with nadir neutrophil and platelet counts occurring at 7-10 days post-treatment. We studied the transgenerational effect of the sublethal dose of gamma radiation on the proliferative activity of cells in the rostral migratory stream (RMS) in the brain of neonatal and young progeny of male rats exposed to the dose of 3 Gy 25 days before conception with intact control females. A 63-year-old woman with previously treated stage I lung cancer was reexamined 5 years later for recurrence. A conventional work-up using computed tomographic scanning and transbronchial biopsy showed nothing abnormal. We describe our 9-year experience with lectin-treated T-cell-depleted haplocompatible parental bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for 24 patients with severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID). Nineteen of 21 evaluable patients had T-cell engraftment; 2 of 11 patients tested had B-cell and monocyte engraftment. Fourteen of 24 (58%) patients are alive 7 months to 9.8 years post-BMT.
