Visibility: science and regulation.

The 1999 Regional Haze Rule provides a context for this review of visibility, the science that describes it, and the use of that science in … evable levels above those produced by natural sources. Some natural events, notably dust storms and wildfires, are episodic and cannot be represented by annual average background values or emission estimates. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission reductions correspond with lower sulfate (SO4(2-)) concentrations and visibility improvements in the regions where these …

Prescribed burns drive lasting changes in soil nitrogen cycling and microbial function.

Fire is a major pulse disturbance to soil microbial communities, with broad implications for nutrient cycling; however, regular burning is also a natural and often-essential process maintaining biodiversity in unique and imperiled fire-dependent ecosystems. Prescribed fire is widely used to promote this biodiversity and simultaneously reduce wildfire risk. Although such repeated burning is known to alter surface biodiversity, belowground soil geochemistry, and soil microbial community structure, the functional consequences (i.e., the metabolic capabilities that underlie the ecosystem services

Wildland firefighter exposure and female cancer risk: currently available evidence.

The James M. Inhofe National Defence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 established that certain illnesses and diseases are to be deemed as proximately caused by employment in federal fire protection activities. However, cancers affecting female wildland firefighters were not included on this list and are recommended for further evaluation. We present the best available scientific evidence for the risk of breast and gynaecological cancers associated with exposures that are commonly measured in the wildland fire environment, including benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and particula

Seeking natural capital projects: Forest fires, haze, and early-life exposure in Indonesia.

Natural capital will be depleted rapidly and excessively if the long-term, offsite impacts of depletion are ignored. By examining the case of tropical forest burning, we illustrate such myopia: Pursuit of short-term economic gains results in air pollution that causes long-term, irreversible health impacts. We integrate longitudinal data on prenatal exposure to the 1997 Indonesian forest fires with child nutritional outcomes and find that mean exposure to air pollution during the prenatal stage is associated with a half-SD decrease in height-for-age z score at age 17, which is robust to several

The link between air pollution and chronic rhinosinusitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Environmental exposures have become increasingly recognized as contributors to both the development and severity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). While this relationship is well established in lower airway diseases, the role of air pollution - specifically, particulate matter (PM) - in upper airway disease, namely CRS, has only been demonstrated more recently. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent studies on the link between air pollution and chronic rhinosinusitis. RECENT FINDINGS: Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) has a significant n

MD-Unet for tobacco leaf disease spot segmentation based on multi-scale residual dilated convolutions.

Identification and diagnosis of tobacco diseases are prerequisites for the scientific prevention and control of these ailments. To address the limitations of traditional methods, such as weak generalization and sensitivity to noise in segmenting tobacco leaf lesions, this study focused on four tobacco diseases: angular leaf spot, brown spot, wildfire disease, and frog eye disease. Building upon the Unet architecture, we developed the Multi-scale Residual Dilated Segmentation Model (MD-Unet) by enhancing the feature extraction module and integrating attention mechanisms. The results demonstrate

[Impact of climate change and pollution on the global health of older adults].

Climate change and pollution are major public health challenges, with older adults particularly at risk due to frailty, multimorbidity, soci … es, and undernutrition, further exacerbated by extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and wildfires. These adverse outcomes are amplified by intrinsic factors (age, comorbidities, socioeconomic status) and extrinsic factors (housing, infrastructure, healthcare system). Protecting older adults from environmental threats should be recognized as a ne …

The cumulative impact of fine particulate matter exposure on hippocampal volume and working memory: Insights from prenatal and adolescent exposures from the ABCD study.

BACKGROUND: Global warming, urbanization, coal-burning pollution, and global wildfires draw attention to the necessity of bridging gaps in our current understanding of the effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on neurodevelopment. Despite evidence of environmental contaminants having deleterious effects on cognition and neurodevelopment in particularly sensitive areas like the hippocampus that have prolonged plasticity, much of this work examines a single time point (e.g., prenatal exposure) in single site studies. As a result, it is unclear whether deleterious effects accumulate over dev…

Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) - associated cognitive impairment and morbidity in humans and animal models: a systematic review.

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) is one of the criteria air pollutants that (1) serve as an essential carrier of airborne toxicants arising from combustion-related events including emissions from industries, automobiles, and wildfires and (2) play an important role in transient to long-lasting cognitive dysfunction as well as several other neurological disorders. A systematic review was conducted to address differences in study design and various biochemical and molecular markers employed to elucidate neurological disorders in PM2.5 -exposed humans an…

Nanostructured Bioaerogels as a Potential Solution for Particulate Matter Pollution.

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a significant environmental and public health issue globally. Exposure to high levels of PM, especially fine particles, can have severe health consequences. These particles can come from a variety of sources, including natural events like dust storms and wildfires, as well as human activities such as industrial processes and transportation. Although an extensive development in air filtration techniques has been made in the past few years, fine particulate matter still poses a serios and dangerous threat to human health and to our environment. Conventional a…

Effects of air pollution on human health - Mechanistic evidence suggested by in vitro and in vivo modelling.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) comprises both solid and liquid particles, including carbon, sulphates, nitrate, and toxic heavy metals, which can induce oxidative stress and inflammation after inhalation. These changes occur both in the lung and systemically, due to the ability of the small-sized PM (i.e. diameters ≤2.5 μm, PM2.5) to enter and circulate in the bloodstream. As such, in 2016, airborne PM caused ∼4.2 million premature deaths worldwide. Acute exposure to high levels of airborne PM (eg. during wildfires) can exacerbate pre-existing illnesses leading to hospitalisation, such as in…

Impact of fuel moisture on chaparral emissions under flaming and smoldering conditions.

Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to quantify gas and particulate emissions from flaming and smoldering combustion of four dominant chaparral species (eucalyptus, coastal live oak, manzanita, and toyon) with different fuel moisture content from California, USA under controlled laboratory conditions. Results show that the higher fuel moisture content enhanced the production of incomplete combustion products, mostly CO and hydrocarbons. Smoldering combustion consistently produced 10-70 times higher particulate matter emission factors compared to flaming across all species,

Primary care, weather, and the missed opportunity for savings.

Extreme weather is a recurring source of stress on healthcare delivery, yet health systems remain largely reactive. Unlike an individual medical emergency, which the system absorbs one case at a time, a heat wave, wildfire smoke episode, or storm affects an entire population simultaneously. The resulting surge degrades care for every emergency patient, not only those the weather directly harmed. Primary care that anticipates weather-related risk and intervenes proactively can blunt that surge, but a central barrier to scaling such care is economic rather than clinical. Conventional prevention

Laboratory Quantification of Emissions from Wildland-Urban Interface Fuels Using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.

Emissions from eight common wildland-urban interface (WUI) fuels were quantified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy under varying oxygen concentrations (0, 14, 21%) and heat fluxes (25, 50 kW/m2). Emission factors for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and other gaseous and particulate effluents varied significantly across these conditions. By implementing a new Toxicity Score method, polyvinyl chloride was identified as the most hazardous fuel, followed by asphalt shingles and vinyl plank flooring under smoldering conditions at 21% oxygen concentration. Hydrogen chloride w
