Ventilation during steady-state exercise in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A preliminary study.

In this preliminary study 20 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) walked on the treadmill until symptoms limited furth … he resting inspiratory capacity, indicating a decline in functional residual capacity and increased work of breathing. It is concluded that there is a need further to assess patients with COPD in respect of the association between exertional dyspnoea, alveolar ventilation and lung mechanics.

Nanowire Array Breath Acetone Sensor for Diabetes Monitoring.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes characterized by the accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood. Breath acetone, a ketone, directly correlates with blood ketones. Therefore, monitoring breath acetone can significantly enhance the safety and efficacy of diabetes care. In this work, the design and fabrication of an InP/Pt/chitosan nanowire array-based chemiresistive acetone sensor is reported. By incorporation of chitosan as a surface-functional layer and a Pt Schottky contact for efficient charge transfer processes and photovoltaic effect, self-p

[The Nocturnal Respiratory Rate in COPD Patients of Varying GOLD Severity with/without Nicotine Consumption: Calculation by Means of Breath Sound Analysis].

Respiratory rate is an important risk marker and enables early detection of critically ill and vulnerable patients in clinical routine. The aim of this pilot study with 31 patients (COPD severity levels II - IV) was to determine the mean nocturnal respiratory rate based on breath sound recordings and to investigate the dependence of respiratory rate on COPD severity level and smoker status. The mean respiratory rate of the total collective was 19/min. For the COPD-GOLD severity levels, no significant differences in mean respiratory rate could be observed. When nicotine consumption is taken int

[Sleep-disordered breathing and occupational medicine: considerations on three clinical cases].

Three subjects suffering from sleep-disordered breathing are described. Two of them (a 37-year-old lorry driver with obstructive sleep apnea, and a 47-year-old bricklayer with upper airway resistance syndrome) had suffered several accidents at work in few months, due to daytime sleepiness. The third patient (45-year-old) had developed (central and obstructive) sleep apnea after having been exposed to organic solvents for 15 years as a painter. In all the three subjects, polysomnography led to correct diagnosis, and nocturnal ventilotherapy with nasal CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure)

Detection of drugs of abuse in exhaled breath from users following recovery from intoxication.

It has recently been demonstrated that amphetamine, methadone and tetrahydrocannabinol are detectable in exhaled breath following intake. Exhaled breath, therefore, constitutes a new possible matrix for drugs-of-abuse testing. The present work aims to further explore this possibility by a study on patients treated for acute intoxication with abused drugs. Fifty-nine patients (44 males, age range 24-74) were included in the study, and breath, plasma and urine samples were collected following recovery, together with interview data. Analyses of breath and plasma samples were conducted with liquid

The effects of asymmetrical versus symmetrical high-flow nasal cannula on respiratory muscle activity in acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A randomised crossover study.

BACKGROUND: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is standard therapy for acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and is increasingly used in hypercapnic COPD. Comparative data between the asymmetrical and conventional HFNC interfaces regarding respiratory muscle work of breathing is limited. This study aimed to compare the effects of both HFNC interfaces on diaphragm and parasternal intercostal thickening fraction (TFdi and TFpi), and other physiological variables. METHODS: This randomised crossover study enrolled two cohorts: 20 subjects with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and 18 subjects with …

Calm beats cute: designing aesthetic-functional congruence in human-robot interaction for breathing companion robots.

INTRODUCTION: Which robot would you trust to guide you through a breathing exercise, a cute cartoon-like humanoid, a soft animal companion, a clinical mechanical device, or a serene meditative figure? This study examines how four design aesthetics affect social evaluation and technology acceptance of Neffy, a social breathing-companion robot that supports stress relief and wellbeing by guiding exercises through visual, audio, and haptic cues synchronized with upper-body movement. METHODS: In an online study, 126 participants viewed a video of a person interacting with Neffy during a guided br

Pulmonary outcome in extremely low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether infants with hyaline membrane disease (HMD) superimposed on immature lung disease (ILD) have more abnormal lung function and respiratory drive during the evolution of chronic neonatal lung disease (CNLD) in extremely low birth weight infants (ELBW; <1000 g). METHODS: We measured lung mechanics (respiratory frequency, tidal volume, minute ventilation, lung resistance, lung compliance, lung impedance, and work of breathing per minute) and respiratory drive (airway opening pressure 100 milliseconds after initiation of breath [P(0.1)] and maximal inspiratory pressu…

Marked tachypnea in siblings with chronic beryllium disease due to copper-beryllium alloy.

Two biological sisters working at the same factory for > 9 years developed chronic beryllium disease (CBD) from a copper-beryllium alloy. Both had marked tachypnea (36 breaths/min and 45 breaths/min at rest, respectively), persisting over 8 years. Ventilation during exercise (assessed in one sibling) was grossly excessive (57 L/min, expected 23 L/min) with a respiratory rate of 64 breaths/min even with normal baseline routine pulmonary function tests. Blood beryllium lymphocyte transformation test and lung biopsies confirmed the diagnosis. No other cases of CBD have been reported from this pla

Breathing, voice, and movement therapy: applications to breathing disorders.

Elsa Gindler (1885-1961) developed a holistic approach to the human body and psyche via the movement of breath. Gindler experimented with movements to strengthen the deeper layers of the muscular system and improve the circulation of oxygen, movements that reduced tensions that had been preventing the breathing muscles from functioning properly. Subsequently, she founded a school for breathing and body awareness. The biggest breathing muscle in the human body is the diaphragm, the lowering of which can only take place when the jaw and the throat are relaxed, the belly is free, and the psoas (m

Computational investigation of flow characteristics and particle deposition patterns in a realistic human airway model under different breathing conditions.

Airborne particle pollution causes a range of respiratory and cardiovascular disorders by entering the human respiratory system through the breathing process. The administration of pharmaceutical particles by inhalation is another effective way to treat pulmonary illnesses. Studying particle deposition in the respiratory system during human breathing is crucial to maintaining human health. This necessity served as the impetus for this work, which aims to investigate how the airflow and particles' deposition are influenced by constant inhalation and circulatory breathing, particle diameter, and

Orthopnea and inspiratory effort in chronic heart failure patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Orthopnea is a typical feature of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), the factors contributing to it are not completely understood. We investigated changes in dyspnea and other respiratory variables, induced by altering posture (from sitting to supine) in 11 CHF patients (NYHA classes II-IV) and 10 control subjects. METHODS AND RESULTS: We measured dyspnea (Borg scale) the diaphragm pressure time product per minute (PTPdi/m, index of metabolic consumption), and mechanical properties of the lung (lung compliance (C,L) and resistances (R,L). CHF patients also underwent a

Determinants of effective continuous positive airway pressure in obstructive sleep apnea. Role of respiratory effort.

We investigated whether cephalometric measurements, nocturnal indices of negative intrathoracic pressure, or the frequency of sleep-related breathing disorders were related to the level of effective continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We examined 22 OSA patients who underwent two consecutive polysomnographic recordings, the first for diagnosis and the second for CPAP titration. Cephalometric measurements, spirometric data, and blood-gas analysis results were available for all subjects. In the diagnostic polysomnography, at least 30 apneas

Effect of balloon mitral valvuloplasty on exercise capacity, ventilation and skeletal muscle oxygenation.

OBJECTIVES: The short- and long-term effects of valvuloplasty on exercise capacity, ventilation and skeletal muscle oxygenation were investi … valvuloplasty. Immediate symptomatic improvement probably results from an immediate decrease in the work of breathing. Long-term symptomatic improvement results from changes that occur in the peripheral skeletal musculature as well as from the reduced work of breathing.
