Genetic diversity of a population of Schistosoma haematobium derived from schoolchildren in east central Zimbabwe.

To characterize the extent of genetic diversity of Schistosoma haematobium within and among its definitive host (intra- and interhost parasite diversity), 133 individual isolates from 25 infected schoolchildren were compared using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers. With 4 primers, 53 unambiguous loci were identified, and of these, 22 were polymorphic. Mean heterozygosity in the population was 0.116 +/- 0.043. Analysis of molecular variance showed the majority of variance occurred within, rather than between, hosts. Frequencies of certain alleles segregated the parasite population into

Risk factors for HIV infection at enrollment in an urban male factory cohort in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Between March 1993 and March 1995, volunteers at 40 Harare factories were interviewed regarding sociodemographic characteristics and behavior; HIV serostatus was also determined. Among 2,691 men enrolled, HIV prevalence was 19.4%. Prevalence rose 2-fold with each year of age in young men (< 23 years). In a multivariate logistic model that included sociodemographic and behavioral variables, compared with those between 25 and 44 years, both younger men (OR = 0.51) and older men (OR = 0.49) were less likely to be HIV positive. In addition, marriage (OR = 2.01), history of sexually transmitted dis

Value of the history and stool occult blood test in selection of patients for upper endoscopy in Zimbabwe.

Patients with abdominal pain and no definite diagnosis referred for endoscopy were studied to define discriminating features in the history, and the value of a stool occult blood test, in predicting the presence of upper gastrointestinal disease. Endoscopy was performed in 116 patients; pathology was seen in 32 (duodenal ulcer 17, gastric carcinoma 4, gastric ulcer 3, miscellaneous 8) and no pathology was seen in 84 patients. Features that predicted upper gastrointestinal pathology were, in descending order of rank: a positive pointing sign, a positive stool Fecult test, a history of vomiting,

A cross-sectional study on the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis among sugar cane cutters in Zimbabwe.

A schistosomiasis prevalence and intensity survey was carried out among sugar cane cutters of Hippo Valley and Triangle, the two largest irrigated sugar estates in Zimbabwe. Urine and stool specimens were collected for determination of schistosomiasis infection from 1995 cane cutters. A total of 315 (15.8pc) cutters were found to be infected with Schistosoma mansoni while 163 (8.2pc) were found to be positive for S. haematobium. The arithmetic mean egg count (AMEC) and geometric mean egg count (GMEC) for the different age groups into which the cane cutters were divided was calculated. The prev…

The role of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis in pelvic inflammatory disease and its sequelae in Zimbabwe.

The presence of antibodies to pili of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis serovar L2 were assessed in women consecutively hospitalized in Zimbabwe with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID; n = 66), infertility (n = 227), and ectopic pregnancy (n = 60). Women delivering live full-term infants served as controls. Of the infertile women, 60% had secondary infertility; 59% had macroscopic evidence of a tubal abnormality. Women with PID, infertility and tubal disease, and ectopic pregnancy and tubal disease had significantly higher prevalences of antibodies against C. trachomatis and N. go…

Cervical cancer awareness among women recently diagnosed with cervical cancer in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer remain high in Southern Africa (SA). We explored awareness of cervical cancer symptoms and risk factors, as well as risk lay beliefs among women recently diagnosed with cervical cancer from SA and Zimbabwe. Patients were asked to complete a locally validated questionnaire with unprompted, open-ended questions to assess awareness of cervical cancer symptoms and risk factors. Among 501 women (SA 285, Zimbabwe 216), 46% (229) were able to recall one or more symptoms (SA 24%, Zimbabwe 76%) and 19% (93) were able to recall one or more risk factors of…

Shrinking the lymphatic filariasis map of Zimbabwe: Reassessing the population requiring treatment through confirmatory mapping.

OBJECTIVES: Zimbabwe is endemic for lymphatic filariasis (LF) with 39 districts identified for mass drug administration (MDA) in 2014. The objective of this study was to reassess the current population requiring MDA. METHODS: The LF confirmatory mapping method was used to evaluate the prevalence of circulating filarial antigens among school-aged children (9-14 years) in previously endemic districts. This was achieved through a cross-sectional survey between 2021 and 2023, applying a cluster sampling approach across 39 districts, targeting 18,720 children to assess ongoing LF transmission. RE…

Climate change and malaria in Chiredzi District, Zimbabwe: emerging evidence and pathways towards malaria prevention.

BACKGROUND: Climate change can influence malaria incidence directly and indirectly, impacting vector and parasite dynamics, along with socioeconomic factors influencing malaria risk. In Zimbabwe there is a paucity of research linking climate change, environmental factors, and malaria incidence, hindering coordinated efforts for malaria elimination. Accordingly, the aim of the study was to explore the link between climate change, environmental factors, and malaria incidences, from 2010 to 2022, in Chiredzi district, Zimbabwe. METHODS: A transdisciplinary approach was applied, combining quantit…

Female autonomy and intimate partner violence: findings from the Zimbabwe demographic and health survey, 2015.

Intimate partner violence is a persistent social problem in Zimbabwe and has been linked to patriarchal attitudes that promote the superiority of men in marital relationships while denying women agency. Using 2015 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey data, we examined the influence of female autonomy on intimate partner violence. Our analysis was restricted to 2847 women who were in some form of sexual union. Consistent with earlier studies, our results show that more than 40% of the women had experienced some form of intimate partner violence. The most prevalent form of intimate partner vio…

Cultural competence: a framework for promoting voluntary medical male circumcision among VaRemba communities in Zimbabwe.

Almost a decade after the formal introduction of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as an important technology for HIV prevention, its implementation is still fraught with acceptability challenges. This is especially true among ethnic groups where male circumcision is conducted as a rite of passage into adulthood. In this article we question why VMMC is being met with resistance despite widespread awareness of its promise to reduce HIV incidence in a culturally circumcising community in Zimbabwe. In-depth and key informant interviews were conducted with selected VaRemba initiation grad…
