Skeletal muscle myopathy is caused by prolonged ethanol misuse and affects between half and two-thirds of chronic alcohol misusers. In tof boys the activation of hypophyseal-thyroid system and activity increase of lipoprotein spectrum of blood serum was established. Furthermore, in the tof adolescents the level of liposoluble vitamin alpha-tocopherol is increased as compared with the Caucasians adolescents.

This work described a novel freshwater strain of Cyanobacteria, Dolichospermum solitarium MAC-C17 from the Zaporozhye region in the south of European Russia and characterised its growth and biochemical parameters. The strain demonstrated high biomass, lipid, and protein productivity, comparable to the best-known data for high-productivity cyanobacteria. The independent and joint associations of serum selenium and vitamin A (retinol) and E (alpha tocopherol) concentrations with the risk of death from cancer were studied in 51 case-control pairs--that is, 51 patients with cancer, each paired with a control matched for age, sex, and smoking. Vitamin E is important in maintaining normal neurological structure and function. In this study, 100 children with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) were studied and compared to a suitably age-matched control group. Posterior column deficits, cerebellar deficits, and problems with fine motor coordination were present to a significant degree in the PEM subjects. We report on a 25-year-old patient with isolated mitochondrial complex III deficiency and a new heteroplasmic mutation (T14849C) in the cytochrome b gene. He suffered from septo-optic dysplasia, retinitis pigmentosa, exercise intolerance, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and rhabdomyolysis. A HESX1 mutation was excluded as a cause of his septo-optic dysplasia. Low alpha-tocopherol concentrations in his muscles and an elevated urinary leukotriene E(4) excretion indicate increased production of reactive oxygen species.

The use of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) as an alternative to liquid extraction was examined for the isolation of vitamin A palmitate and vitamin E acetate from cream and lotion preparations. METHODS: Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study of 50-69-year-old Finnish male smokers enrolled 1985-1988. These analyses are based on the placebo group and the alpha-tocopherol supplementation group, altogether 14 011 men, with full information on tobacco smoking. Mortality follow-up was to the end of April 1993 and it was based on the complete death certificate register of the Statistics Finland.
