Monitored and modeled coral population dynamics and the refuge concept.

With large-scale impacts on coral reefs due to global climatic change projected to increase dramatically, and suitability of many areas for reef growth projected to decrease, the question arises whether particular settings might serve as refugia that can maintain higher coral populations than surrounding areas. We examine this hypothesis on a small, local scale in Honduras, western Caribbean. Dense coral thickets containing high numbers of the endangered coral Acropora cervicornis occur on offshore banks while being rare on the fringing reef on nearby Roatán. Geomorphological setting and commu

Using Biomod2 and spatial quality modeling for comprehensive production zoning of Bupleurum chinense DC.

INTRODUCTION: Bupleurum chinense DC. (B. chinense), an important traditional medicinal herb in China, exhibits several pharmacological activities, including antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects. Its medicinal value is highly dependent on the types and contents of secondary metabolites, such as saikosaponins. With the growing global emphasis on natural medicines in recent years, the market demand for B. chinense has been expanding, increasing the need for stable yield and high medicinal quality. METHODS: This study constructed a comprehensive production zoning system

Forecasting and mapping dengue fever epidemics in China: a spatiotemporal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever (DF) has emerged as a significant public health concern in China. The spatiotemporal patterns and underlying influencing its spread, however, remain elusive. This study aims to identify the factors driving these variations and to assess the city-level risk of DF epidemics in China. METHODS: We analyzed the frequency, intensity, and distribution of DF cases in China from 2003 to 2022 and evaluated 11 natural and socioeconomic factors as potential drivers. Using the random forest (RF) model, we assessed the contributions of these factors to local DF epidemics and predic

Response of atmospheric biomarkers to NO(x)-induced photochemistry generated by stellar cosmic rays for earth-like planets in the habitable zone of M dwarf stars.

Understanding whether M dwarf stars may host habitable planets with Earth-like atmospheres and biospheres is a major goal in exoplanet research. If such planets exist, the question remains as to whether they could be identified via spectral signatures of biomarkers. Such planets may be exposed to extreme intensities of cosmic rays that could perturb their atmospheric photochemistry. Here, we consider stellar activity of M dwarfs ranging from quiet up to strong flaring conditions and investigate one particular effect upon biomarkers, namely, the ability of secondary electrons caused by stellar

Combining individual and close-kin mark-recapture to design an effective wildlife population survey.

Close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) is a promising approach for assessing population size of species that have been difficult to survey using more traditional methods. Here, we combine individual and close-kin mark-recapture in a single modeling framework (ICKMR) and provide an example of study design using this approach for Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens). We develop the ICKMR model and test it using simulated datasets, then use properties of the pseudo-likelihood to investigate the expected precision in estimates of abundance with different proposed survey designs. Our motivating ex

Geostatistical analysis to guide treatment decisions for soil-transmitted helminthiasis control in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain a public health problem in Uganda despite biannual national deworming campaigns implemented since the early 2000s. Recent surveys have indicated a heterogeneous STH infection prevalence, suggesting that the current blanket deworming strategy may no longer be cost-effective. This study identified infection predictors, estimated the geographic distribution of STH infection prevalence by species, and calculated deworming needs for school-age children (SAC). METHODOLOGY: Bayesian geostatistical models were applied to STH survey data (2

Personal exposure levels to O3, NOx and PM10 and the association to ambient levels in two Swedish cities.

Exposure to air pollution is of great concern for public health although studies on the associations between exposure estimates and personal exposure are limited and somewhat inconsistent. The aim of this study was to quantify the associations between personal nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM10) exposure levels and ambient levels, and the impact of climate and time spent outdoors in two cities in Sweden. Subjects (n = 65) from two Swedish cities participated in the study. The study protocol included personal exposure measurements at three occasions, or waves. Person

Future scenarios of risk of Vibrio infections in a warming planet: a global mapping study.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by non-cholera Vibrio species have undergone a global expansion over the past few decades reaching new areas of the world that were previously considered adverse for these organisms. The geographical extent of the expansion has not been uniform, and some areas have shown a rapid increase in infections. METHODS: We applied a new generation of models combining climate, population, and socioeconomic projections to map future scenarios of distribution and season suitability for pathogenic Vibrio. We used the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 framework. Three da

The South-American distribution and southernmost record of Biomphalaria peregrina-a potential intermediate host of schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis remains a major parasitic disease, endemic in large parts of South America. Five neotropical species of Biomphalaria have been found to act as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in natural populations, while others have been shown to be susceptible in experimental infections, although not found infected in the field. Among these potential intermediate hosts, Biomphalaria peregrina represents the most widespread species in South America, with confirmed occurrence records from Venezuela to northern Patagonia. In this study, we report the southernmost record for the species

Spatio-temporal factors influencing the occurrence of Syngamus trachea within release pens in the South West of England.

Syngamus trachea is a pathogenic tracheal nematode that causes syngamiasis in wild and game birds, especially when birds are managed at high densities. Despite its pathogenic nature, very little is known about its epidemiology and relationship with ambient temperature and humidity. The spatial and temporal modelling of disease was undertaken on two pheasant estates within the South West of England from April 2014 to August 2014. Significant differences between the mean numbers of eggs per gram of soil were identified between pens at both site 1 and site 2 but did not differ significantly betwe

Heat-related mortality burden of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and diabetes complications in mainland China amid global warming: a nationwide, case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Rising global temperatures and diabetes pose growing health risks worldwide. Individuals with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to heat, mainly because of impaired thermoregulation. However, the specific heat-related mortality risks associated with diabetes subtypes and complications remain poorly quantified. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, individual-level, time-stratified case-crossover study encompassing 289 902 diabetes-related deaths across mainland China from 2013 to 2019. Death records for 2013-19 were sourced from the China Cause of Death Reporting System, a nationw

The Environmental Impacts of Electronic Medical Records Versus Paper Records at a Large Eye Hospital in India: Life Cycle Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Health care providers worldwide are rapidly adopting electronic medical record (EMR) systems, replacing paper record-keeping systems. Despite numerous benefits to EMRs, the environmental emissions associated with medical record-keeping are unknown. Given the need for urgent climate action, understanding the carbon footprint of EMRs will assist in decarbonizing their adoption and use. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate and compare the environmental emissions associated with paper medical record-keeping and its replacement EMR system at a high-volume eye care facility in southern India

Noninfectious factors associated with pneumonia and pleuritis in slaughtered pigs from 143 farrow-to-finish pig farms.

A cross-sectional study involving 143 farrow-to-finish herds was carried out to identify herd-level noninfectious factors associated with pneumonia and pleuritis in slaughter pigs. Data related to herd characteristics, biosecurity, management and housing conditions were collected by questionnaire during a farm visit. Climatic conditions were measured over 20 h in the post-weaning and finishing rooms where the slaughter pigs were kept. After these on-farm investigations, the finishing pigs were examined at slaughter for lung lesions. A sample of 30 randomly selected pigs per herd was scored for

Therapeutic approaches for septicemia induced by multidrug-resistant bacteria using desert-adapted plants.

AIM: Septicemia, a life-threatening condition, can arise when bacterial infections are left untreated, allowing the pathogens to spread into the bloodstream. Moreover, infections caused by MDR bacteria are particularly challenging, as they can persist and lead to septicemia even when treated with conventional antibiotics. This study aimed to address this crisis by investigating combination therapies using desert-adapted medicinal plant extracts, including Jasonia candicans (J. candicans), Cistanche tubulosa, Moltkiopsis ciliata, and Thymelea hirsuta, as alternative treatments. The goal was to

[Exploring the Characteristics of Influencing Factors and Mitigation Strategies for Surface Urban Heat Island Intensity in Four Cities in China Based on Machine Learning and Local Climate Zones].

With the acceleration of global urbanization, the urban heat island (UHI) effect has become increasingly pronounced, posing severe health threats to urban populations during extreme high-temperature events. However, due to the limitations of the urban-rural dichotomy, comparative studies on the UHI effect across multiple cities are fraught with significant uncertainties. There is an urgent need to conduct in-depth analyses to identify underlying patterns, which would facilitate the development of effective and targeted heat mitigation strategies applicable to multiple cities. We enhanced conve

Seasonal Variation in Public Interest in Gout: Longitudinal Infodemiology Study Using Google Trends (2014-2024).

BACKGROUND: Gout, the most common inflammatory arthritis worldwide, shows clear seasonal variation in flares. Traditional epidemiology provides important insights but often lacks real-time resolution. Digital behavior, such as online search patterns, offers a scalable, timely complement that can capture seasonal trends in disease-related activity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether public interest in gout, as expressed through Google (Google LLC) search queries, exhibits seasonal variation across countries, US states, and metropolitan areas, and to assess the influence of sympto

Mpox Discourse on Twitter by Sexual Minority Men and Gender-Diverse Individuals: Infodemiological Study Using BERTopic.

BACKGROUND: The mpox outbreak resulted in 32,063 cases and 58 deaths in the United States and 95,912 cases worldwide from May 2022 to March 2024 according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Like other disease outbreaks (eg, HIV) with perceived community associations, mpox can create the risk of stigma, exacerbate homophobia, and potentially hinder health care access and social equity. However, the existing literature on mpox has limited representation of the perspective of sexual minority men and gender-diverse (SMMGD) individuals. OBJECTIVE: To fill this gap, this st

Effect modification of greenness on the association between heat and mortality: A multi-city multi-country study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying how greenspace impacts the temperature-mortality relationship in urban environments is crucial, especially given climate change and rapid urbanization. However, the effect modification of greenspace on heat-related mortality has been typically focused on a localized area or single country. This study examined the heat-mortality relationship among different greenspace levels in a global setting. METHODS: We collected daily ambient temperature and mortality data for 452 locations in 24 countries and used Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) as the greenspace measurement. We u

High temperatures and nephrology: The climate change problem.

It is well known that climate change greatly affects human health, even though there are few studies on renal outcomes. Heat waves have been found to increase cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality, as well as the risk of acute renal failure and hospitalisation due to renal diseases, with related mortality. Recurrent dehydration in people regularly exposed to high temperatures seems to be resulting in an unrecognised cause of proteinuric chronic kidney disease, the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of which is becoming better understood. However, beyond heat waves and ext
