Effect of sound amplification in speech perception in elderly with and without tinnitus.

PURPOSE: To verify the effect of the use of auditory prostheses on speech perception tests in elderly individuals with and without tinnitus having hearing impairment. METHODS: We evaluated 24 elderly patients with moderate sensorineural hearing loss, aged between 60 and 70 years, distributed into two groups according to the presence or absence of tinnitus. All of them were fitted with micro-canal auditory prostheses from the same manufacturer and model, and underwent speech perception tests. The assessments were performed with and without the amplification devices after 1 and 3 months of effe

[Efficacy of implants in stapedoplasty].

Stapedoplasty efficacy was compared in use of one of the following implants: Shea, Schuknecht and K-piston. Two stapedoplasty techniques were also compared: stapedectomy and stapedotomy. The analysis of 279 cases of tympanic and mixed otosclerosis shows that the greatest number of complications (neurosensory hypoacusis, deafness, postoperative tympanic granulomas) occurred in use of Shea prosthesis (200 implantations) both in stapedectomy and stapedotomy. Schuknecht (n=56) and K-piston (n=23) implants caused no complications. Postoperative audiological examination showed better functional resu

Artifactual responses when recording auditory steady-state responses.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to investigate, in hearing-impaired participants who could not hear the stimuli, the possibility of artifactual auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) when stimuli are presented at high intensities. DESIGN: ASSRs to single (60 dB HL) and multiple (20 to 50 dB HL; 500 to 4000 Hz) bone-conduction stimuli as well as single 114 to 120 dB HL air-conduction stimuli, were obtained using the Rotman MASTER system, using analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion rates of 500, 1000, and 1250 Hz. Responses (p < 0.05) were considered artifactual when their numbers exceeded

[Treatment and rehabilitation in juvenile hearing disorders].

The early fitting of a hearing aid to a child with a proven hearing disorder is decisive for the further development of the child. Depending upon the age of the child, the fitting of a hearing aid requires a variety of strategies, and differs considerably from aid fitting in adulthood. It is more difficult, requires more time, and needs a lot of patience and experience. The individual steps and procedures for fitting an aid are described, and the possibilities of rehabilitation of a child with such a hearing impairment are discussed. Apart from the optimal provision of a hearing aid, the child

Emerging Therapies for Genetic Deafness: The Rise of Precision Gene Editing.

Hearing loss is a prevalent sensory disorder with profound social and health impacts. Although hearing aids and cochlear implants can significantly restore auditory perception, they do not address the underlying genetic causes. Inherited forms of hearing loss, often monogenic, are ideal candidates for gene therapy, particularly since over 150 genes have been linked to deafness. Advances in vector engineering and genome editing technologies now enable precise targeting of auditory cells within the inner ear. Technologies such as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats-Cas syst

Stem Cell-Based Hair Cell Regeneration and Therapy in the Inner Ear.

Hearing loss has become increasingly prevalent and causes considerable disability, thus gravely burdening the global economy. Irreversible loss of hair cells is a main cause of sensorineural hearing loss, and currently, the only relatively effective clinical treatments are limited to digital hearing equipment like cochlear implants and hearing aids, but these are of limited benefit in patients. It is therefore urgent to understand the mechanisms of damage repair in order to develop new neuroprotective strategies. At present, how to promote the regeneration of functional hair cells is a key sci

Chronic Oral Selegiline Treatment Mitigates Age-Related Hearing Loss in BALB/c Mice.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), a sensorineural hearing loss of multifactorial origin, increases its prevalence in aging societies. Besides hearing aids and cochlear implants, there is no FDA approved efficient pharmacotherapy to either cure or prevent ARHL. We hypothesized that selegiline, an antiparkinsonian drug, could be a promising candidate for the treatment due to its complex neuroprotective, antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and dopaminergic neurotransmission enhancing effects. We monitored by repeated Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) measurements the effect of chronic per os selegiline ad

Inner Ear Gene Therapies Take Off: Current Promises and Future Challenges.

Hearing impairment is the most frequent sensory deficit in humans of all age groups, from children (1/500) to the elderly (more than 50% of the over-75 s). Over 50% of congenital deafness are hereditary in nature. The other major causes of deafness, which also may have genetic predisposition, are aging, acoustic trauma, ototoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides, and noise exposure. Over the last two decades, the study of inherited deafness forms and related animal models has been instrumental in deciphering the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms of disease. However, there is still

Pig's ear: Streptococcus suis Meningitis and its associated inner ear implications.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a zoonotic pathogen commonly found in Asian countries. Infection with this bacterium typically clinically presents as meningitis and individuals whom handle swine are at increased risk of developing infections. We present a case of a patient with a S. suis meningitis who worked as a butcher. The 48-year-old man was admitted to our department with headaches, fevers, nausea and bilateral hearing loss. According to his medical history, the patient had sustained a cut on his finger while preparing pork meat. A microbiological examination of the cerebrospinal fluid a

Impaired balance and neurodevelopmental disabilities among children with congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

AIM: Although cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection, existing research has not provided us with a full picture of how this can affect children in the future. The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate disabilities in a well-defined group of children with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, who had been fitted with cochlear implants because of severe hearing impairment. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team assessed 26 children with congenital CMV infection for balance difficulties, neurodevelopmental disabilities and language and visual impairment. We also

[A case of cortical deafness following bilateral putaminal hemorrhage].

A 59-year-old man had suffered from consciousness disturbance and right hemiplegia in December, 1996. He was diagnosed as left putaminal hemorrhage and his symptoms improved by conservative treatment. After one week since the onset, when he became alert, he noticed deafness. He was admitted in our hospital because of deafness and dysarthria in March, 2001. T 1-weighted MR image of the brain revealed bilateral putaminal hemorrhage and a low signal area in the white matter of right temporal lobe. Single photon emission computed tomography image revealed hypoperfusion in the bilateral temporal lo

Review of the roles of temporal and place coding of frequency in speech discrimination.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the frequency spectrum of sounds is represented in the neural code of single auditory nerve fibres both spatially and temporally, but few experiments have been designed to test which of these two representations of frequency is used in the discrimination of complex sounds such as speech and music. This paper reviews the roles of place and temporal coding of frequency in the nervous system as a basis for frequency discrimination of complex sounds such as those in speech. Animal studies based on frequency analysis in the cochlea have shown that the place c

Impact noise: the importance of level, duration, and repetition rate.

The applicability of the equal energy hypothesis (EEH) to impact noise exposures was studied using chinchillas. Hearing thresholds were estimated by recording the evoked potentials from a chronic electrode implanted in the inferior colliculus. The animals were exposed to broadband impacts of 200-ms duration. The study was carried out in two parts. In experiment I, six exposure levels (107, 113, 119, 125, 131, and 137 dB SPL) and three repetition rates (4/s, 1/s and 1/4s) were employed. In the second experiment, the total duration of the exposure as well as the total energy were kept constant b
