Previous studies have shown that desmin, the muscle-specific intermediate filament protein, is a substrate for the endogenous muscle arginine-specific mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase and that ADP-ribosylation inhibits assembly of desmin into intermediate filaments (Huang et al., Exp. Myocardium tolerates intermittent ischemia followed by short reperfusions better than continuous ischemia of the same duration. The results of a prospective longitudinal controlled study comparing the coagulation effects of a standard low-dose combined oral contraceptive (Microgynon 30), a desogestrel-containing pill (Marvelon) and a triphasic preparation (Triquilar) after one year's treatment in ethnic Chinese women is presented in this paper. Fifty seven patients with histologically proven cyst-like lesions of the mandible are reviewed. The importance of combining radiographic with scintigraphic imaging is stressed. These two imaging modalities are complementary in demonstrating both the biological activity and the extent of the lesion. In osteomyelitis the bone scan, which is more sensitive than the radiograph, is also the method of choice in assessing the result of treatment.

Since atherosclerotic heart disease results in more than half of the perioperative deaths that follow abdominal aortic surgery, a prospective protocol was designed for preoperative evaluation and intraoperative hemodynamic monitoring. An isotope dilution method, using (32)P-labeled pyrophosphate, has been developed for the measurement of inorganic pyrophosphate (PP(1)) in human plasma. The specificity of the method was better than 90% as assessed by elution patterns during ion-exchange chromatography, by paper chromatography, and by incubation with inorganic pyrophosphatase.
