BACKGROUND AND AIM: Botulinum toxin type A is considered to be an effective antispasmodic in recent years. We assess the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A for the treatment of poststroke spasticity in the upper extremity using a meta-analysis.
METHODS: We searched several databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane database for relevant studies, up until October 2017. All randomized controlled trials of botulinum toxin type A treat poststroke upper limb spasticity published were included. The primary outcome measure was modified ashworth score at the elbow, finger a

BACKGROUND: Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) is an important extracellular matrix protein primarily functioning in the musculoskeletal tissues and especially endochondral bone growth. Mutations in COMP cause the skeletal dysplasia pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) that is characterized by short limbs and fingers, joint laxity, and abnormalities but a striking lack of skull and facial abnormalities.
METHODS: This study examined both mice and humans to determine how mutant-COMP affects face and skull growth.
RESULTS: Mutant COMP (MT-COMP) mice were phenotypically distinct. Snout length an

BACKGROUND: Crouzon syndrome is a rare and complex autosomal dominant craniosynostosis syndrome with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 60,000 births. The typical features are craniosynostosis, proptosis, midfacial hypoplasia, and noncranial manifestations, including deformities in the cervical spine, elbow, and fingers. Crouzon syndrome is usually caused by pathogenic variants in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene.
METHODS: We reported a three-generation family with Crouzon syndrome; the proband showed extremely severe limb abnormalities. The clinical features were obtained

Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTTS) is characterized by diffuse proliferation of synovial-like cells and multinucleated giant cells along tendon sheaths. This benign tumor typically presents in the third to fourth decade of life and is exceeding rare in children. Here we describe a case of a 10-years-old girl with a history of soft tissue swelling involving the third digit of left hand, bilateral wrists and ankles. Pathology of the finger mass revealed abundant multinucleated giant cells consistent with GCTTS. Resection of the tendinous masses from the ankles also showed multinucleated g

An arm amputation is extremely invalidating since many of our daily tasks require bi-manual and precise control of hand movements. Perfect hand prostheses should therefore offer a natural, intuitive and cognitively simple control over their numerous biomimetic active degrees of freedom. While efficient polydigital prostheses are commercially available, their control remains complex to master and offers limited possibilities, especially for high amputation levels. In this pilot study, we demonstrate the possibility for upper-arm amputees to intuitively control a polydigital hand prosthesis by u

BACKGROUND: The assessment and treatment of writer's cramp is complicated due to the variations in the forces and angles of involved joints. Additionally, in some cases compensatory movements for cramp relief further complicates assessment. Currently these variables are subjectively measured with clinical scales and visual assessments. This subjectivity makes it difficult to successfully administer interventions such as Botulinum toxin injection or orthotics resulting in poor efficacy and significant side effects.
METHOD: A multi-sensor system was used to record finger and wrist forces along

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the proximal phalanges of the fingers are common injuries in children and adolescents. The majority can be treated by closed reduction and splinting, and complications are rare. The purpose of the prospective study was to document the results of functional-conservative treatment of extra-articular physeal fractures using either a functional forearm cast or the Lucerne Cast (LuCa).
METHODS: Clinical and radiographic results of 13 pediatric patients having 13 extra-articular physeal fractures (e.g., juxta-epiphyseal fractures, Salter-Harris type I or II physeal fracture

Functional consequences of hand contractures may lead to extreme impairment in hand functions so repair of the contractures can solve the problems related to hand functions. Different forms of z plasties have widely been used for the release of scar contractures. In this study, a useful z plasty technique, z advancement rotation flap (ZAR) was adapted for the release of hand contractures in the way of using only local tissues. Fourteen consecutive patients who had hand contractures, were treated successfully with z advancement rotation flap technique. They suffered from hand contractures for a

We present the clinical and radiological findings of seven patients with a seemingly new variant of Desbuquois dysplasia (DBQD) and emphasize the radiographic findings in the hand. All cases showed remarkably accelerated carpal bone ages in childhood, but none of the patients had an accessory ossification center distal to the second metacarpal, or thumb anomalies, instead, there was shortness of one or all metacarpals, with elongated appearance of phalanges, resulting in nearly equal length of the second to fifth fingers. The two sibs followed for 20 years showed narrowing and fusion of the in

In artificial prosthetics for knee, hip, finger or shoulder joints, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) is a significant material. Several attempts to reduce the wear rate of UHMW-PE, i.e. the application of suitable coatings, are in progress. A surface modification of polyethylene with wear-resistant hydrogenated diamond-like carbon is favourable, owing to the chemical similarity of polyethylene (-C-H(2)-)(n) and C:H or amorphous C:H (a-C:H) coatings with diamond-like properties. In the present study, the microstructure of a-C:H coatings on UHMW-PE substrates was investigated by

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Functional inability of the affected limb is often added to alodynia and hyperalgesia in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) type I. Two CRPS cases are reported in which botulinum toxin A as coadjuvant drug has contributed to motor and functional recovery of the affected limb.
CASE REPORTS: Two CRPS type I patients were initially evaluated for upper limb pain control. Both were unable to open the hand and referred pain intensity by numeric analog scale (NAS) of 10 at rest or when hand and fingers were passively manipulated. A sequence of 5 weekly ipsilateral stell

The authors report a case of chronic attackwise pain in the bilateral feet for five years due to tethered cord syndrome. Despite extensive examinations, this condition had been overlooked. The patient is a 21-year-old man. He had suffered attackwise pain resembling sticking a thumbtack in the soles of his feet, since he was 16 years old. The pain appeared several times a day and continued for 30 seconds to 30 minutes for 5 years. Physical examination revealed hammer toes and high-arched feet. The fingers and knee joints showed hyperextension. The neurological findings showed weakness of toe ex

The fundamental problem in all types of hand burns is a loss of skin and subsequent deformities. The goal of skin grafting on the dorsal hand is to graft a sufficient amount of skin, as much as the original amount, and to restore normal hand function without secondary deformities. The safe, or Michigan, position commonly has been used for immobilizing the hand. However, this position is to protect hand function rather than to provide for adequate skin grafting. This institution has developed a new hand position (the fist position) for grafting the greatest amount of skin on the dorsal side of
