Knowledge, Attitudes and Application of Critical Nutrient Supplementation in Vegan Diets among Healthcare Professionals-Survey Results from a Medical Congress on Plant-Based Nutrition.

Plant-based diets are associated with numerous health benefits but also bear risks of micronutrient deficiencies if inadequately planned. The risk of nutrient deficiencies can be reliably reduced by supplementation but requires risk-awareness. We distributed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire to n = 902 healthcare professionals attending a congress on plant-based nutrition (VegMed 2018, Berlin). On the day of the survey (21 April 2018), n = 475 questionnaires were returned and analyzed descriptively. Of the n = 213 strict vegan participants, 2% (n = 5) took no supplements at all. All supplementi

[Protein -based diet with respect to the principles of rational nutrition. Menus analysis].

INTRODUCTION: A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates has four phases, first of them being the attack phase, which eliminates carbohydrates to the highest extent. In subsequent phases the consumption of carbohydrates is gradually allowed but their ratio is limited. The aim of performed studies was to analyze the metabolic effects of protein -based diet. The hypothesis – the analysis based on the composition of the diets should draw the attention to health risks being not only related to too high consumption of protein. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study, 40 diets were composed accord

[Current approaches for vitamins and minerals tolerable intake levels substantiation].

UNLABELLED: The upper tolerable intake levels (ULs) for vitamins and minerals and their content in the widely consumed foods and in a specialized nutrition (SN) become very relevant due to the growing interest in both segments fortification. The substantiation of these micronutrients' tolerance limits in fortified foods and dietary supplements (DS) is complicated by the fact that such products are dedicated to eliminate micronutrient deficiencies without excessive intake at the population and individual levels. ULs substantiation for vitamins and minerals is the key element in this issue resol

Characterization of Hypomagnesemia in Alcoholic Hepatitis Patients and Its Association with Liver Injury and Severity Markers.

INTRODUCTION: Hypomagnesemia has been documented in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). This study aims to characterize hypomagnesemia in alcoholic hepatitis (AH) patients and identify its response with liver injury and severity markers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 49 male and female AH patients with an age range of 27-66 years were enrolled in this study. Patients were grouped by MELD: MiAH (mild AH < 12 [n = 5]), MoAH (12 ≤ moderate AH ≤ 19 [n = 13]), and SAH (severe AH ≥ 20 [n = 31]). Patients were also evaluated by MELD grouping as non-severe (MELD ≤ 19 [n = 18]) and severe (MEL

MicroRNA-mediated responses to magnesium-induced stress coordinate target genes involved in porphyrin and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites metabolisms in mulberry (Morus alba L.).

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play essential regulatory roles in magnesium (Mg) imbalance by targeting key defense genes for cleavage or translational repression. miRNA targets in response to Mg deficiency and toxicity remain uncharacterized in mulberry (Morus alba) in Mg-induced stress. We, for the first time, investigated Mg-stress-responsive miRNAs and their targets in mulberry leaves using transcriptome-wide sequencing to identify miRNAs putatively involved in Mg-stress tolerance. In this study, Mg (MgSO4) treatment applied in six concentration ranging from 0 mM/L (T0) as Mg deficiency, 1

Interaction between Boron and Other Elements in Plants.

Boron (B) is an essential mineral nutrient for growth of plants, and B deficiency is now a worldwide problem that limits production of B deficiency-sensitive crops, such as rape and cotton. Agronomic practice has told that balanced B and other mineral nutrient fertilizer applications is helpful to promote crop yield. In recent years, much research has reported that applying B can also reduce the accumulation of toxic elements such as cadmium and aluminum in plants and alleviate their toxicity symptoms. Therefore, the relation between B and other elements has become an interesting issue for pla

Silicon modifies leaf nutriome and improves growth of oak seedlings exposed to phosphorus deficiency and Phytophthora plurivora infection.

Beneficial effects of silicon (Si) on plants have primarily been studied in crop species under single stress. Moreover, nutrient acquisition-based responses to combination of biotic and abiotic stresses (a common situation in natural habitats) have rarely been reported, in particular in conjunction with soil amendments with Si. Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), one of the ecologically and economically most important tree species in Europe, is facing a severe decline due to combined stresses, but also problems in assisted regeneration in nurseries. Here, we studied the effect of Si supply on

Magnesium Fertilization Improves Crop Yield in Most Production Systems: A Meta-Analysis.

Magnesium deficiency is a frequently occurring limiting factor for crop production due to low levels of exchangeable Mg (ex-Mg) in acidic soil, which negatively affects sustainability of agriculture development. How Mg fertilization affects crop yield and subsequent physiological outcomes in different crop species, as well as agronomic efficiencies of Mg fertilizers, under varying soil conditions remain particular interesting questions to be addressed. A meta-analysis was performed with 570 paired observations retrieved from 99 field research articles to compare effects of Mg fertilization on …

Alcoholic myopathy: vitamin D deficiency is related to muscle fibre atrophy in a murine model.

AIMS: Chronic myopathy has been described in alcoholics, characterized by atrophy of type II fibres, and vitamin D deficiency. Low serum vitamin D levels are frequent in alcoholics. The possibility exists that serum vitamin D levels are related to muscle changes in a murine experimental model. METHODS: Histological analysis of the right gastrocnemius muscle was performed in four groups of adult Sprague-Dawley rats, sacrificed after 5 weeks of treatment following the Lieber-DeCarli model. We studied the association between muscle histological changes and the activity of glutathione peroxidase
