An Update on Zika Virus in Asia.

Zika virus (ZIKV) was first isolated in Asia from mosquitoes from Malaysia in 1966. However, the incidence of Zika and Zika-related neurological complications in Asia is not well known. The few studies of Zika in Asia have been inconsistent in pointing to likely transmission levels, with some studies suggesting substantial transmission and others not. Interpretation of existing epidemiological and public health data from Asia is constrained by the non-specific symptomatology of Zika, the high proportion of subclinical ZIKV infections, relatively low viremia, and the lack of accurate serologica

Celebrating 50 years of polio elimination in New Zealand: but inadequate progress in eliminating other vaccine-preventable diseases.

New Zealanders can now reflect on and celebrate 50 years of polio elimination in this country. This success was followed by eliminating two other infectious diseases, brucellosis and hydatids, and an imported potential disease vector, the southern saltmarsh mosquito. However, this country has made inadequate progress in eliminating several other vaccine-preventable diseases. These include measles, mumps, and rubella, which are priority candidates for elimination, and potentially Hib disease and rotavirus infection. To achieve such successes almost certainly requires that the country: (i) build

Factors associated with the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets among women of childbearing age: secondary analysis of data from a KAP survey in four regions of Guinea 2023.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is endemic in Guinea. The use of mosquito nets by women of childbearing age helps protect children under five from malaria. AIM: To estimate the proportion of mosquito nets use and identify the factors explaining that use among women aged 15 to 49 in four regions of Guinea. SETTING: The study was carried out in Guinea specifically in Conakry, Boke, Kindia, and Labe regions. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a 2023 cross-sectional study, yielding a sample of 1,876 women. The outcome was mosquito net use the night before the survey. Simple logistic regressions

Assessing insecticide treated nets awareness at Njala University: case study of Njala and Towama Campuses, Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a significant health challenge in Sierra Leone, particularly affecting pregnant women and children under five years of age. Despite efforts to reduce malaria cases, its prevalence remains high. The Sierra Leone National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan (NMESP) 2021-2025 aims to reduce the malaria burden significantly through universal access to Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs). OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the knowledge and utilization of ITNs for malaria control in the Moyamba and Bo districts of Sierra Leone (at the Njala University's Main Campus in Moyamba Distri

Reasons for low long-lasting insecticide-treated net use and repurposing: qualitative study from southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the main vector control tools and remain protective against malaria, even in the presence of high pyrethroid resistance. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, the estimated percentage of the population sleeping under LLINs is low. Hence, this qualitative study was conducted to explore perceptions about LLINs and the reasons for low LLIN use in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: Qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Ethiopia. Study areas were selected based on low LLIN use following a quantitative survey. Seven focus group discuss

Declining burden of malaria over two decades in a rural community of Muheza district, north-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The recently reported declining burden of malaria in some African countries has been attributed to scaling-up of different interventions although in some areas, these changes started before implementation of major interventions. This study assessed the long-term trends of malaria burden for 20 years (1992-2012) in Magoda and for 15 years in Mpapayu village of Muheza district, north-eastern Tanzania, in relation to different interventions as well as changing national malaria control policies. METHODS: Repeated cross-sectional surveys recruited individuals aged 0 - 19 years from the

Comparative efficacy of Solanum xanthocarpum extracts alone and in combination with a synthetic pyrethroid, cypermethrin, against malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi.

With a goal of minimal application of environmentally hazardous chemical insecticides, the larvicidal activity of cypermethrin was studied alone and in combination with the root extract of Solanum xanthocarpum against anopheline larvae. Petroleum ether extract was observed to be the most toxic, with LC,, of 1.41 and 0.93 ppm and LC90 of 16.94 and 8.48 ppm at 24 and 48 hours after application, respectively, followed by carbon tetrachloride and methanol extracts. The values for cypermethrin were an LC50 of 0.0369 ppm after 24 hours and 0.0096 ppm after 48 hours and LC90 of 0.0142 and 0.0091 ppm

[Stratification of a hyperendemic city in hemorrhagic dengue].

Any effort to control dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) faces a number of challenges. Among these are the great environmental heterogeneity of homes and neighborhoods in urban centers where the primary dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, breeds, as well as shortages of resources and of personnel trained in mosquito control. Adequate epidemiological surveillance could serve as a basis to begin to stratify urban communities and identify the areas in them where control efforts should be focused. In this study we stratified Maracay, Venezuela, a city with hyperendemic dengue hemorrhagic fever, using a geog…

Insecticide cross-resistance spectra and underlying resistance mechanisms of Sri Lankan anopheline vectors of malaria.

Present status of insecticide resistance was investigated in two major vectors of malaria; An. culicifacies and An. subpictus, collected from a high malaria transmission area in Sri Lanka during 1996/1998. Adult and larval bioassays were carried out to obtain log-probit mortality lines for malathion, propoxur, permethrin and chlorpyrifos. Respective LD50 values were 4.45%, 0.002%, 0.16% and 0.001% for An. culicifacies and 0.66%, 0.004%, 0.004% and 0.04% for An. subpictus. Adults were also tested for WHO standard discriminating dosages of malathion, propoxur, permethrin, DDT, cypermethrin, delt

The design of a community-based health education intervention for the control of Aedes aegypti.

This report describes the process used to develop locally appropriate educational materials and to implement the education component of a community-based Aedes aegypti control program in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The process is broken into five stages: formative research, developing recommendations for behavior change, development of educational messages, development and production of educational materials, and distribution of the materials. Appropriate terminology and taxonomies for dengue were obtained from open in-depth interviews; baseline data from a knowledge, beliefs, and practices quest

The epidemiology of St. Louis encephalitis in Dallas, Texas, 1966.

An epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in Dallas, Texas, in the summer of 1966. A total of 545 suspected cases within Dallas city and county were reported, of which 145 were laboratory-confirmed as SLE virus infection. The greatest concentration of cases occurred in lower socioeconomic areas of the central part of the city in black populations. The attack rate and mortality rate increased markedly with age. The overall attack rate was 15.2 per 100,000, with a case fatality rate of 9.7%. During the course of the epidemic, most of the county was sprayed aerially with an ultra-low v

Spatial eco-climatic gradients drive adaptive 2La chromosomal inversion polymorphism in Anopheles coluzzii, a major malaria vector in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Chromosomal inversions are important genetic mechanisms that facilitate local adaptation, ecological flexibility, and behavioural variation in mosquito populations. In Anopheles coluzzii, a dominant malaria vector in West Africa, the 2La inversion has been associated with desiccation tolerance, thermal resistance, and insecticide resistance. Despite Nigeria's ecological diversity and substantial malaria burden, the spatial distribution and clinal dynamics of 2La inversion polymorphism in An. coluzzii remain poorly characterized. This study investigated the distribution of 2La inver

Spatial and temporal analysis of Rift Valley fever outbreaks in livestock in Uganda: a retrospective study from 2013 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease caused by the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), primarily affecting livestock and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. First detected in Kenya in 1930, RVF has since spread across Africa, including Uganda, and to the Arabian Peninsula. Uganda reported its first human cases of RVF in 1968, with sporadic outbreaks continuing since the significant outbreak in 2016, particularly in regions with high livestock populations. Although RVFV was detected in mosquitoes in Uganda as early as 1944, the spatial and temporal distribution of RVF outbreaks ha

Reproducibility of malaria sporozoite challenge model in humans for evaluating efficacy of vaccines and drugs: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The development of novel malaria vaccines and antimalarial drugs is limited partly by emerging challenges to conduct field trials in malaria endemic areas, including unknown effects of existing immunity and a reported fall in malaria incidence. As a result, Controlled Human Malaria Infection (CHMI) has become an important approach for accelerated development of malarial vaccines and drugs. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to establish aggregate evidence on the reproducibility of a malaria sporozoite challenge model. METHODS: A systematic review of research articl

Swarms of the malaria vector Anopheles funestus in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles funestus mosquitoes currently contribute more than 85% of ongoing malaria transmission events in south-eastern Tanzania, even though they occur in lower densities than other vectors, such as Anopheles arabiensis. Unfortunately, the species ecology is minimally understood, partly because of difficulties in laboratory colonization. This study describes the first observations of An. funestus swarms in Tanzania, possibly heralding new opportunities for control. METHOD: Using systematic searches by community-based volunteers and expert entomologists, An. funestus swarms were

Кодирование пяти японских энцефалитных переносчиков комаров ДНК (Culex fuscocephala, Culex gelidus, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex псевдовишнуи и Culex vishnui).

Urban lymphatic filariasis in the metropolis of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The last decades have seen a considerable increase in urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa, and it is estimated that over 50% of the population will live in urban areas by 2040. Rapid growth of cities combined with limited economic resources often result in informal settlements and slums with favorable conditions for proliferation of vectors of lymphatic filariasis (LF). In Dar es Salaam, which has grown more than 30 times in population during the past 55 years (4.4 million inhabitants in 2012), previous surveys have indicated high prevalences of LF. This study investigated epidemiol
