Application of Neural Networks to 12-Lead Electrocardiography - Current Status and Future Directions.

The 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is a fast, non-invasive, powerful tool to diagnose or to evaluate the risk of various cardiac diseases. The vast majority of arrhythmias are diagnosed solely on 12-lead ECG. Initial detection of myocardial ischemia such as myocardial infarction (MI), acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and effort angina is also dependent upon 12-lead ECG. ECG reflects the electrophysiological state of the heart through body mass, and thus contains important information on the electricity-dependent function of the human heart. Indeed, 12-lead ECG data are complex. Therefore, the cl

Automatic anatomical classification of esophagogastroduodenoscopy images using deep convolutional neural networks.

The use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has dramatically advanced our ability to recognize images with machine learning methods. We aimed to construct a CNN that could recognize the anatomical location of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) images in an appropriate manner. A CNN-based diagnostic program was constructed based on GoogLeNet architecture, and was trained with 27,335 EGD images that were categorized into four major anatomical locations (larynx, esophagus, stomach and duodenum) and three subsequent sub-classifications for stomach images (upper, middle, and lower regions). The p

Sensory-evoked turning locomotion in red-eared turtles: kinematic analysis and electromyography.

We examined the limb kinematics and motor patterns that underlie sensory-evoked turning locomotion in red-eared turtles. Intact animals were held by a band-clamp in a water-filled tank. Turn-swimming was evoked by slowly rotating turtles to the right or left via a motor connected to the shaft of the band-clamp. Animals executed sustained forward turn-swimming against the direction of the imposed rotation. We recorded video of turn-swimming and computer-analyzed the limb and head movements. In a subset of turtles, we also recorded electromyograms from identified limb muscles. Turning exhibited

Facial expression discrimination emerges from partially overlapping neural subspaces of detection and identity.

How does the human brain decode facial expressions? Addressing this question requires models that tightly link neural representations to behavior. Here, we first establish rhesus macaques as an animal model of human facial expression discrimination, showing strong behavioral correspondence across six expressions. To probe underlying neural mechanisms, we leverage artificial neural network (ANN) models of the ventral stream as explicit computational hypotheses explaining macaque behavior. Despite action unit-based stimulus generation and high classification accuracies of face-optimized models,

Large Kernel Network for Efficient Image Restoration.

The pursuit of large receptive fields has shaped the evolution of computer vision frameworks, spanning from convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to Transformers and Mamba. Recently, large-kernel operations have revitalized CNNs, making them competitive once again and widely applicable across diverse vision tasks. However, scaling kernel sizes inevitably results in substantial growth in both parameters and computational overhead. Consequently, existing approaches are often limited to small kernels or resort to decoupled designs for large kernels. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient

192-dimensional wavelength-/mode-/polarization-multiplexed photonic architecture for highly parallel optical computing.

Photonic matrix-vector multiplication (MVM) constitutes a core computational primitive in on-chip photonic neural networks, enabling ultrahigh-speed multiply-accumulate operations. Most existing photonic MVM implementations do not fully exploit the intrinsic multidimensional degrees of freedom of light, thereby constraining parallelism, scalability, and functional flexibility. Here, we present a 192-dimensional multiplexed photonic computing architecture that simultaneously harnesses 32 wavelengths, three spatial modes, and dual polarizations, enabling highly parallel and fully reconfigurable

Exploring transformer reliability in clinically significant prostate cancer segmentation: A comprehensive in-depth investigation.

Despite the growing prominence of transformers in medical image segmentation, their application to clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) has been overlooked. Minimal attention has been paid to domain shift analysis and uncertainty assessment, critical for safely implementing computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. Domain shift in medical imagery refers to differences between the data used to train a model and the data evaluated later, arising from variations in imaging equipment, protocols, patient populations, and acquisition noise. While recent models enhance in-domain performance,

Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in Revolutionizing Brain Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment: A Narrative Review.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical field holds promise in improving medical management, particularly in personalized strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors. However, integrating AI into clinical practice has proven to be a challenge. Deep learning (DL) is very convenient for extracting relevant information from large amounts of data that has increased in medical history and imaging records, which shortens diagnosis time, that would otherwise overwhelm manual methods. In addition, DL aids in automated tumor segmentation, classification, and diagnosi

Direct Estimation of Choroidal Thickness in Optical Coherence Tomography Images with Convolutional Neural Networks.

Automatic and accurate estimation of choroidal thickness plays a very important role in a computer-aided system for eye diseases. One of the most common methods for automatic estimation of choroidal thickness is segmentation-based methods, in which the boundaries of the choroid are first detected from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. The choroidal thickness is then computed based on the detected boundaries. A shortcoming in the segmentation-based methods is that the estimating precision greatly depends on the segmentation results. To avoid the dependence on the segmentation step, in

Machine Learning-Based Analysis of Sperm Videos and Participant Data for Male Fertility Prediction.

Methods for automatic analysis of clinical data are usually targeted towards a specific modality and do not make use of all relevant data available. In the field of male human reproduction, clinical and biological data are not used to its fullest potential. Manual evaluation of a semen sample using a microscope is time-consuming and requires extensive training. Furthermore, the validity of manual semen analysis has been questioned due to limited reproducibility, and often high inter-personnel variation. The existing computer-aided sperm analyzer systems are not recommended for routine clinical

Virtual reality interface devices in the reorganization of neural networks in the brain of patients with neurological diseases.

Two key characteristics of all virtual reality applications are interaction and immersion. Systemic interaction is achieved through a variety of multisensory channels (hearing, sight, touch, and smell), permitting the user to interact with the virtual world in real time. Immersion is the degree to which a person can feel wrapped in the virtual world through a defined interface. Virtual reality interface devices such as the Nintendo® Wii and its peripheral nunchuks-balance board, head mounted displays and joystick allow interaction and immersion in unreal environments created from computer soft

Supporting diagnostic decisions using hybrid and complementary data mining applications: a pilot study in the pediatric emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: This article demonstrates the capacity of a combination of different data mining (DM) methods to support diagnosis in pediatric emergency patients. By using a novel combination of these DM procedures, a computer-based diagnosis was created. METHODS: A support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural networks (ANNs), fuzzy logics, and a voting algorithm were simultaneously used to allocate a patient to one of 18 diagnoses (e.g., pneumonia, appendicitis). Anonymized data sets of patients who presented in the emergency department (ED) of a pediatric care clinic were chosen. For each

Fast opposite weight learning rules with application in breast cancer diagnosis.

Classification of breast abnormalities such as masses is a challenging task for radiologists. Computer-aided Diagnosis (CADx) technology may enhance the performance of radiologists by assisting them in classifying patterns into benign and malignant categories. Although Neural Networks (NN) such as Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have drawbacks, namely long training times, a considerable number of CADx systems employ NN-based classifiers. The reason being that they provide high accuracy when they are appropriately trained. In this paper, we introduce three novel learning rules called Opposite Weigh

A Machine Learning-Based Computational Architecture for Unlocking Water Dynamics in Saturated Calcium Silicate Hydrate.

The durability of reinforced concrete is closely related to the transport behavior of water and aggressive ions within the complex nanoporous network of calcium silicate hydrate. While molecular dynamics simulations provide critical atomistic insights into these confined transport behaviors, their immense computational cost limits their scalability to complex structural and temporal domains. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose a novel, modular computational framework that synergizes high-throughput molecular dynamics with advanced graph neural networks. By rigorously learning the mapping b

Deep learning-based monocular placental pose estimation: towards collaborative robotics in fetoscopy.

PURPOSE: Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a placental defect occurring in monochorionic twin pregnancies. It is associated with high risks of fetal loss and perinatal death. Fetoscopic elective laser ablation (ELA) of placental anastomoses has been established as the most effective therapy for TTTS. Current tools and techniques face limitations in case of more complex ELA cases. Visualization of the entire placental surface and vascular equator; maintaining an adequate distance and a close to perpendicular angle between laser fiber and placental surface are central for the effective

Bridging cognition and control through passive eye movement integration in motor imagery brain-computer interfaces.

Motor Imagery (MI) Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) represent a promising technology for neurorehabilitation and assistive control. However, the clinical viability of these systems is frequently hindered by the inherent limitations of electroencephalography (EEG) with regard to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), non-stationarity, and high inter-subject variability. Standard decoding methods often fail to capture the complexity of user intention leading to unreliable performance and user frustration. This review proposes a solution to these challenges by advocating for the integration of pass

Combined evidence from artificial neural networks and human brain-lesion models reveals that language modulates vision in human perception.

Comparing information structures in between deep neural networks (DNNs) and the human brain has become a key method for exploring their similarities and differences. Recent research has shown better alignment of vision-language DNN models, such as contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP), with the activity of the human ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) than earlier vision models, supporting the idea that language modulates human visual perception. However, interpreting the results from such comparisons is inherently limited owing to the 'black box' nature of DNNs. Here we combine mod
