Modeling the human retina in a dish: Advances and future directions.

Human pluripotent stem cells, including embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells, can be directed to self-organize into three-dimensional retinal organoids that recapitulate the development, cellular architecture, and key functional features of the human retina. These organoids provide a powerful in vitro platform that models key stages of human retinogenesis and offers unique opportunities to study mechanisms of retinal development and disease in a human context that is not easily accessible in vivo. Recent advances in genome editing, single-cell and multiomics technologies, an

Programming Hydrogel Release Kinetics to Tissue Healing Phases: From Network Design to Therapeutic Synchronization.

The sequential phases of tissue healing-inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling-demand distinct pharmacokinetic profiles that conventional drug delivery systems fail to provide, creating a "chronotherapy gap" that contributes to chronic wound pathologies. Hydrogels, with their highly tunable network structures, offer a unique platform to program release kinetics in synchrony with these healing timelines. This review systematically examines design strategies for phase-synchronized hydrogel systems, categorized into three hierarchical paradigms: intrinsic network control (crosslinking densit

Cardiac computed tomography of the canine mitral and tricuspid valves.

Cardiac computed tomography (cCT) has emerged as a valuable imaging modality in veterinary cardiology and can be used to visualize and understand diseases that affect the mitral and tricuspid valves of dogs. While echocardiography remains the primary diagnostic tool for atrioventricular valve disease, cCT offers excellent spatial and temporal resolution, at the same time overcoming the limitations posed by acoustic windows. This review article describes the technical aspects of cCT in dogs emphasizing administration of contrast medium, electrocardiographic gating, and scan timing. Specific rec

Preparation of polyethyleneimine modified cellulose/nano-CdS composite aerogel and its photocatalytic properties for organic dyes under visible light.

Organic dyes are extensively used in industries such as textiles and printing, contributing to the increasing discharge of wastewater and posing significant risks to human health. Conventional photocatalysts, including metal oxides and sulfides, often exhibit limited pollutant adsorption capacities and suffer from charge carrier recombination. In this study, we synthesized a novel composite aerogel via the lyophilization of cellulose modified with polyethyleneimine and cadmium sulfide. This composite demonstrated exceptional efficacy in degrading of methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB).

Advances in studies on tracheal stent design addressing the related complications.

Tracheal stents can be used to quickly reconstruct the airway and relieve symptoms of dyspnea in patients with tracheal stenosis. However, existing tracheal stents lead to complications such as granulation tissue formation, difficulty in removal, persistent growth of malignant tumors, stent migration, and mucus plugging. In this article, we reviewed the main methods used to reduce complications associated with tracheal stent design. Drug-eluting stents can inhibit granulation tissue formation and prevent infection and local chemotherapy. The biodegradable stent can support the trachea for some

Bioprinted Hydrogels for Fibrosis and Wound Healing: Treatment and Modeling.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has been used to fabricate biomaterial scaffolds with finely controlled physical architecture and user-defined patterning of biological ligands. Excitingly, recent advances in bioprinting have enabled the development of highly biomimetic hydrogels for the treatment of fibrosis and the promotion of wound healing. Bioprinted hydrogels offer more accurate spatial recapitulation of the biochemical and biophysical cues that inhibit fibrosis and promote tissue regeneration, augmenting the therapeutic potential of hydrogel-based therapies. Accordingly, bioprinted hydro

A review of strategies for development of tissue engineered meniscal implants.

The meniscus is a key stabilizing tissue of the knee that facilitates proper tracking and movement of the knee joint and absorbs stresses related to physical activity. This review article describes the biology, structure, and functions of the human knee meniscus, common tears and repair approaches, and current research and development approaches using modern methods to fabricate a scaffold or tissue engineered meniscal replacement. Meniscal tears are quite common, often resulting from sports or physical training, though injury can result without specific contact during normal physical activity

An innovative prone positioning system for advanced deformity and frailty in complex spine surgery.

The authors present a technical note for a prone positioning system developed to facilitate cervical extension osteotomy for ankylosing spondylitis in the presence of severe deformity and frailty. Chin-on-chest deformity represents one of the most debilitating changes of ankylosing spondylitis. Where the chin-brow angle approaches or exceeds 90°, prone positioning becomes problematic due to the fixed position of the head. Furthermore, the challenge is compounded where physiological deconditioning leads to frailty, and the side effects of medical therapies decrease muscle mass and skin quality.

Management of obstructive sleep apnoea: an update on the role of distraction osteogenesis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the current literature on the use of distraction osteogenesis as a treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). We reviewed the indications, surgical protocols and outcomes for distraction osteogenesis in paediatric and adult OSA cases described in the literature. RECENT FINDINGS: There is evidence that distraction osteogenesis is effective in treating children with OSA as a result of underdevelopment of jaws such as those with craniofacial syndromes. Distraction osteogenesis appears to be the only available treatment that prevents trache

A 3D-bioprinted hydrogel platform with tunable matrix stiffness reveals mechanical adaptation and doxorubicin resistance in triple-negative breast cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) progression and the therapeutic response are strongly influenced by biomechanical cues within the tumor microenvironment. However, conventional animal models and two-dimensional (2D) cultures do not faithfully recapitulate the mechanical diversity of potential metastatic tissues. Here, we developed a digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D-bioprinted hydrogel platform using gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) or its blend with poly(ethylene glycol)dimethacrylate (PEGDM)-based bioinks to generate cell-laden constructs with compressive moduli representative of soft

Is Functional Reconstruction Feasible With Modified Hip Transposition Using a Customized 3D-printed Femoral Prosthesis After Pelvic Tumor Resection? A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Functional reconstruction after resection of malignant pelvic tumors involving zones I + II ± IV remains a major challenge in orthopaedic oncology. Conventional hip transposition can reduce prosthesis-related complications, but it is often associated with limb shortening and femoral head malrotation. We propose a modified hip transposition technique-femoral lengthening and retroversion hip transposition with a customized three-dimensionally (3D) printed femoral prosthesis-to address deficiencies in limb length, femoral head positioning, and fixation stability, and we evaluate its e
